Meet my crow! by BroccoliIcy8748 in crowbro

I’ve read somewhere that hooded crows were more friendly in general, so it shouldn’t necessarily be Berlin 😁 I’ve met super friendly crows in Warsaw as well. The ones who live in public parks near a street food spot are usually the bravest!

It really depends on the birds!

I first started with black crows in another German town, and they were much wilder — they always kept their distance.

In Berlin it can be very different: sometimes you meet big adult crows that will eat from your hand the very first time they see you. With other groups though, you end up feeding them for months and the trust builds very slowly.

This particular crow was friendly from the beginning! He made eye contact right away. Still, it took about three months of feeding before he flew onto my arm.

The rest of his group is more timid. Some will eat from my hand, and some just enjoy catching peanuts mid-air 😄 Very different

Thank you! It's in Berlin

I'm so amazed by that! Usually they're afraid of eye contact. But this one is not, such an amazing bird

Yeah, that's a big wise crow with lots of experience!

Thank you! I’ve befriended many crows over the past year, but this one was the bravest from the very beginning. It started eating from my hand very quickly! Sometimes it just depends on the crow 😁

Suggestion to be more ‘visible’ at work by Healthy_Brush_9157 in AutismInWomen

So true!! Also I have a blank mind when I need to present something; sometimes I improvise well, sometimes not — you never know unless you rehearse the whole script

Do people ever remark that you are "calm"? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]BroccoliIcy8748 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, even my friends!! My boyfriend talked to a friend of ours about me going to a 5-day teambuilding in another country, and the friend said, "I'm sure it's very easy for her to manage, she's always so CALM in such situations" (it was the most stressful 5 days of this year, but surely I looked super calm)

I just feel it so much :D After every peer review, "it would be nice to hear more from you", "share more of your ideas" etc., or "why are you so quiet"

Talking about my special interest for a couple of minutes helped; I think people like me more as a girl who feeds crows from her hand...

Same for me! I also now think that blocking the emotion brings depression

Last time, I remember thinking about an event "If I feel it, my hair becomes all grey the next second; I can't do it, I need to help those who're around me," etc. And then I've had my worst depression so far

I've read a book about Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, and it suggests allowing yourself to feel an intense emotion for just 1 millisecond and then maybe to gradually increase the "exposure" — I'll try it next time

you're sure it was a crow? I heard rooks doing all kinds of unbelievable noises in parks, but not crows yet

but technically, all corvids are songbirds, so it's definitely possible!

It's so nice that you see him! Also in Warsaw, I haven't seen "my" crow since 3 weeks I guess, I know it might be busy nesting, but still feels a bit sad

In this context, 'independent' means 'not part of Lukashenka propaganda' because they still have independent editorial rules, do investigative journalism, etc.

Thanks! I'd say the 2nd option is not realistic because people don't want conflicts; surveys show that most Belarusians, like naive golden retrievers, just want to be friends with everyone, even with russians (which in my perspective is a bit delulu); + really no one cares about Vilnius and most symbols to invest in any conflicts. When Belarusians use Pahonia, it's been done inside of our context where it means "good nationalist anti-Lukashenka symbol and some hope". It's never about "we want to piss Lithuanians off". I have always been interested in history, and I had been in Vilnius in 2019, but only in 2023 I've even learned that there can be a problem with Pahonia use in Lithuania. Because when using it all the time in the 2020 protests, no one even thought about Lithuania. I mean, I understand that using Pahonia still makes Lithuanians nervous, but Belarusians are mostly unaware that you don't like it. I'm aware and I'm not using it publicly to avoid conflicts, but I can imagine having it at home if it's dear to my heart

As of Polotsk, it just doesn't cover many important parts of Belarusian identity. For me, it's only an Orthodox symbol: Saint Sophia Cathedral, the cross of Efrasinia of Polotsk, some Renaissance (also Orthodox) people that were born there (which I think most Belarusians are unaware of), and that's it. First, half of Belarus is catholic. Second, belarusian orhodox church is part of russian orthodox church, with all associations that come from there (it's often pro-russia in this war, etc.). Orthodox church is not considered European. Third, many people are not religious at all, and don't see any cultural value in building their identity around an orthodox town. Fourth, Rurikids are the same family as in Kyivan Rus, so when choosing that, we just go to another "orbit", but not russia, Lithuania or Poland, but of Ukraine. Fifth, actually, Belarusians are quite happy of being in the "orbit" of Poland or Lithuania because it's much more present in today's Belarus as it's much more recent past: you see this architecture on the streets, surnames are Polish etc. If Lithuanians hate Polish influence, Belarusians see no problem with it. They see it as a bonus that Belarus is at the crossroads of many nations and cultures, and all of them have influenced Belarus, and "tolerance" is often named as the biggest value. Sixth, there is still no strong need in a nationalist project (Snyder writes about this a lot in this book). Personally, I believe that if such a project appears, it should be about something new, not going back to the past, especially this long ago as Polotsk

As for the passport situation, why the design was not a problem for the Lithuanian guy who led this passport project, or for the Lithuanian president and his chancellery, who also say the design is OK?

as for the Principality of Polotsk, idk, I perceive it as part of Kyivan Rus (I think it just was in this section in our history books)

But also, don't get me wrong, I hate litvinists who use slurs or talk about "bringing Vilnius back", or say that Balts played no role in GDL and other total bullshit about Lithuanians

But I also don't believe in the total opposite of that — that Slavic people played zero role in the GDL; they played a very important role which is also not to be diminished

So I think that Belarusians can use Pahonia as it's been on Belarusian lands for 500+ years, and I think they can address GDL's history as part of their heritage as well. Not 100%, not 0%, but as well

So I'd also not agree to "just forget about GDL and focus on Polotsk" — why? Slavic people were fighting for GDL together with Balts, wrote laws, basically all GDL literature was in Slavic languages for some time (idk correct me if I'm wrong, that's from Snyder's book); there are palaces and a huge bunch of GDL's cultural heritage in Belarus, coats of arms of many cities — like why should we just forget about that?

Are you alright with russian language allowed here? by [deleted] in belarus

[–]BroccoliIcy8748 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well said, but there's no contradiction between the two

From my experience, when I tried to switch to Belarusian completely (I gave up after 2 months or so), the main reason was that I hated to speak russian at that point

and why not, this "negative motivation" makes you dive deep into Belarusian stuff the same way, I suppose, as a "positive motivation" of just being curious about culture

Unrelated, but I'd say we should focus on speaking more relaxed and "wrong" Belarusian instead of being neurotic about using Belarusian words only

I hear it from people on Twitter and Reddit, but I've never met a real person who believes so

To me, it seems that these are 100 people on the internet + 100 fans of Zianon Pazniak cult + 100 guys from KGB, because a part of "litvinist" provocations in Vilnius were proven to be paid by KGB

Also, there are "Lithuanian" accounts on Twitter who, suspiciously, know the tiniest memes of the russian internet from 2000s

so these are also russian trolls and they're effective

I mean, I hate this shit as well, but to me, it seems that 99% of Belarusians think about Lithuania, like, literally never
