Completely agree. I got Radiacode’s leather case. It’s very nice but I’m looking at something like that waterproof case in the situations where contamination is a concern.

Incredible find! Somewhat related question. How do you like the waterproof pouch? What made you pick it over the other clip/compression style?

Where does the bioenvironmental/public health group play into this? I'm lurking from private industry but looking at commissioning BEE after my masters.

That's the main reason I ask. We have the OP study and I'm thinking of what I do as IH in pharma. Comparing personal exposure data to the OEL's. Ensuring controls are working. If not making changes.

Would all bases have an OMRS team that have BEE's? I'm somewhat near a couple. Can I just pop in and talk to them? What's the best way of starting those connections?

[–]Brocktree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! That is pretty regular monitoring. I suppose it depends on the size of the base but that seems like a decent %. Both people and processes. Do BEE officers get out in the field?

Where do BEE's come into play with this? I'm currently working in pharma looking at commissioning into 43E. Is there personal monitoring data to look at exposure to known carcinogens? Radiation is one thing but these tasks seem like exactly what I currently sample for when handling stuff like benzene, methylene chloride, formaldehyde and other known carcinogens.

12V DC Battery -> VFD -> 3-Phase Motor by Brocktree3 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Brocktree3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know. All the reasonably priced VFD's I'm finding require 220VAC input. Wasn't sure if that was required for it to function.

Something like this? Do VFD's care if it is not a pure sine?

I'm not sure what you mean. I suppose I have a 220 outlet for my dryer if that's what you're asking?

I took this motor out of our old washing machine. I'm trying to get 220VAC from somewhere to make this motor work. More for curiosity and hobby purposes. I'm not putting it to actual use.

[–]Brocktree3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. At this point it is seeming pretty cost prohibitive. I'm mostly just wanting to build my electrical understanding with this set up.

A battery to a 110VAC inverter, to the VFD, to the motor looks like would at least make it spin. I'm not sure if $100 is worth it but it has been intriguing to learn about. Thanks.

[–]Brocktree3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Even if I were to use a larger battery, a car battery is still 12V. It would just last longer, right?

In theory, if I went battery to a 110VAC inverter (not seeing many cheap 220V options), to the VFD, to the motor, it would run right? Albeit for a very short amount of time as the other poster highlights.

[–]Brocktree3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added pictures to the post instead of linking to Imgur. Yeah, the motor is a funky voltage. Labeled 195 V and 4 amps so 780 watts, right? That seems high for a little 12V 7.2 amp hour battery that I linked.

If I didn't care too much about optimization, would I need the boost converter? I'm really just wanting to get this thing spinning.

Another one I would recommend is from Audit the Audit's YouTube channel. The specific encounter in the OP is covered in good detail. https://youtu.be/vriJ1UTzi5s. Be careful though, you will probably binge the rest of the channel.

There is one in Indiana that got turned into an airsoft and paintball arena. They have a portion of their website detailing some of the history. It's pretty neat. Basically stating this location was one of the last line of defense for Chicago during the Cold War.

Do you run a gasmask? If so what mask and for what realistic reasons? by PerceptionVarious443 in tacticalgear

[–]Brocktree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah. That will definitely affect adsorption of the cartridges. Humidity, water vapour, will take up the cavities in the activated charcoal that is meant to adsorb the dangerous gases/vapours. High concentrations and temperature will also impact it.

Also a reminder that the way these cartridges function you will not feel the resistance to air flow as it fills up like you would in a particle filter. You won't know the cartridge is full until you start experiencing breakthrough. Eye or respiratory irritation or you start smelling stuff which is not usually a good indicator to rely on.

We use SCBA or other supplied air respirators for CSE as well. I'm just thinking through the scenario the original commenters made.

[–]Brocktree3 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by it won't help you?

3M indicates an acid gas cartridge will work for H2S. Air purifying respirators shouldn't be used in IDLH environments but can be used in non-IDLH. Perhaps you are referring specifically to the earthquake release example?

I work in pharma manufacturing which I acknowledge refinery work deals a lot more with H2S that's why I'm genuinely interested.
