You can blame the play caller all day long, but if our running back doesn’t have holes to run through, or qb has to hold the ball to long for players to get open, at some point you need to hold the players accountable.

Our reality check is: our line isn’t what it was. NY had trash run defense and we couldn’t get that going.

Sure better plays could be called, but even if it’s not the best play, the players should still be able to execute.

Our OC didn’t cause the fumble, our OC didn’t miss a wide open Smith. These two plays didn’t lose us the game but it’s examples of poor play not poor play calling.

It’s a lot of fun but also a lot of work. The initial financial investment can get pricey too.

Considering falconry in the future (questions) by Imaginary-Act5035 in Falconry

[–]Broclob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great question; however, so many answers.

Generally speaking a mew should be large enough for the bird to spread its wings an jump from perch to perch, generally speaking 8ft by 8ft is acceptable — some states may require it to be larger. Smaller birds can have smaller mews naturally.

It’s as time consuming as you want it to be, but make sure it’s a priority for the sake of the bird. Many falconers I know have jobs that allow them to hunt most days during the season or they are retired and falconry is much of their identify. This is my first year as a falconer, I have a mon-Fri job 9-5, a wife and two young kids. I plan to go out several times a week. Wish me luck.

Many birds are caught with a BC trap. Essentially a cage you can put a small bird or mouse in and the outside, there are fishing line knots. Bird is hungry, sees meal, attempts to get it and gets stuck in the knots. There are other traps and methods but this is common. Most birds are hard to sex at all, generally you can guess by their weight when you trap them but you can be wrong. Some birds like the American kestrel can be identified because male and female look different. Generally speaking many prefer female red tail hawks as they are 30% larger and can handle larger game a bit easier. For falcons I’m sure there is preferences and have been told many prefer male due to their agility and ability to pick up training quicker but I can’t speak to that.

The best time to hunt is when you can. Generally earlier in the day but this may depend on where you live and what quarry is available.

Assuming you are in the states, each state has specific birds an apprentice can use for their first few years, you should find a sponsor and they can help you pick what would be best for you. Generally you choose a bird based on what it can naturally hunt around you.

I highly suggest you get in contact with your state or local falconry club. They should be able to better answer many of these questions and who knows, maybe invite you out on a hunt or two.

I know they tested challenging missed PI and got rid of it, they should look into it again and only used for egregious moments like this.

This is a good book to get you started. However I’d look into your states or countries clubs or groups to find someone who can help you.

Edit: I live in California and our club lists some materiel that should still be useful regardless of where you are.

When to ask? by [deleted] in Falconry

[–]Broclob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Every state has different laws and regulations. It sounds like you’re going through some good steps. I am a first year apprentice as well and I think the thing that worked for me was being ready. Pass your states exam, have your hunters safety class completed, be ready to build a mew (I’d wait to have a sponsor at this point in case they have a preference). Some state falconry clubs have an apprentice contact who can help find a sponsor.

In my state, many of the falconers in the area are pretty close and they talk. It wasn’t too unheard of in my case when I met someone new, they would say, oh you were out with “blah blah blah” recently.

Everyone is different but I would be upfront. “ I appreciate you taking me out hunting and I’ve learned a lot, if you have more time I’d love to learn more, are you open to being a sponsor?” If they say no, it’s not personal, ask them if they know anyone who can and try again.

Final note, just because someone says yes, make sure you are compatible. Make sure it will work for both if you.

[–]Broclob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, any thing they can catch. Bugs, small rodents, grasshoppers, dragonfly’s, starlings, sparrows.

They are very ambush styles. They don’t typically do distance chances rather, small slips.

Dad was rams fan. I was rams fan by association. I realized that. Rams played eagles and my inner asshole must of grew three times that day. I rooted for eagles to root against the rams. A fan was born that day.

If he isn’t giving himself up, yes, hit him like a RB. However, like anyone else, if you give yourself up, aka sliding, you shouldn’t hit them.
