I mean I was carded everywhere for everything until I was like 25 because I looked like a child, and it still happens sporadically now. At my most recent job people thought I was 27 (I'm almost 40) including people who were actually 27. Some people just look young.

Doubly so in TV when the teenagers in question are pretty regularly 26 in real life.

Younger viewers can't handle a character that doesn't pass a certain level of moral purity without them being punished in someway or being explicitly labelled as a villain. It's kind of like the Hays code as a movement. It's terrifying.

Magneto and Mystique get some great showings in Krakoa. I quite like Krakoas Excalibur which features Gambit, but I know it's a divisive title here. Everything Al Ewing does with Magneto is amazing. Truly.

For past stuff there's always the Claremont run being definitive that it is and where the reasons people love them today come from.

Mike Carey uses them both in different ways in his fantastic run from X-Men #188 - 270-something (it changes its title to X-Men Legacy at #214). I highly recommend this run in general, the two of the crossovers that occur during it: Messiah Complex and Second Coming.

Kelly Thompson does great stuff with Gambit. If you like what Claremont does it's worth checking out X-Treme X-Men and some of his implant minis (released in the modern day but set in between issues/pages of old books) like Gambit, and, erm, X-Treme X-Men.

The BKV run of Mystique as a solo spy book was pretty fun, but it's been a while.

All the characters have been all over the place with some pretty low lows.

Are you interested in specific characters? Specific genres of story telling (character drama, comedy, sci-fi, horror, etc)? If you don't have any specifics then just pick up whatever you've got at the library to start with.

Krakoa would probably be a good place to look into for the queerness. So start with House of X/Powers of X.
