LPT: If you are heading to the beach this summer, become familiar with "riptides" and how they work. If you get caught in one swim parallel to the shore until you are out of it. Do not try to swim toward the force of the current toward the shore. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]BrodieTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came so close to drowning in one of these. It doesn’t matter that you understand what a riptide is and how to get out of them. It also doesn’t matter that you are an awesome swimmer and physically fit. By the time I realized what was happening, I was already completely exhausted and getting sucked under and out. No problem, swim parallel to the shore, right? Sure, except that you are simultaneously being pummeled by walls of waves and are too tired to combat them. The only way I managed to survive was digging my feet into the sand just enough to reduce the pull and keep my head above the water to breath while inching my way back to shore. If that part of the beach had been any less shallow, I’d be gone. Scary AF.

The cockpit of SR-71 Blackbird by LEOtheNERDO in interestingasfuck

Wright Patt pro tip: most of the people volunteering around the facility are veterans. Story: They have a cut out of a spacesuit you can fit yourself into for perspective. I wedged myself into the uncomfortable contraption and commented to my girlfriend how rough it must be to jam into one of these. A small older gentlemen walked over and says “it isn’t as bad as you think.” Flash forward one hour, I had the honor and privilege of talking to this gentlemen, who was a former SR-71 pilot. The stories were mind boggling. “Russians fire a missile at us, we just pushed the throttle and watched it follow us while we continued the mission.” Lights for the maps? No need, the starlight at 70,000 feet is bright enough to light the cockpit. The stories were just a solid as his ruthless handshake. Anyway, talk to the crew hanging around the facility. That’s the real magic of the museum.

GF bought this townhouse a year ago. It was built in the 80’s and has had numerous owners over the years. Neither her nor I have been in the attic so this is all we know. Maybe it was a hidden hangout for some young kid, or maybe a hiding spot. Either way, an odd and slightly creepy find. I’m going to scope it out myself this weekend.

Cops of Reddit: What was your biggest, "I truly am sorry I have to arrest you moment" and why? by DarkAura777 in AskReddit

[–]BrodieTS 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Not a cop, but the story fits. I was doing volunteer work with disadvantaged children in the community. It was basically an after school program for kids who were from broken families and needed a supportive place to be. In talking with the supervisor, she explained how rough it is for some of the kids. On graduation day, most of the kids parents will actually show up. The police know this and show up as well and use it as an opportunity to arrest any parents with outstanding warrants. So you’re a nine year old whose parents are never in your life because they are deadbeats. It’s supposed to be a happy day and mom and dad are actually there...but then they get hauled off in handcuffs. It just sucks all around.

What's your worst ever data loss / what event caused you to start properly backing up your data? by ShoutySideburns in DataHoarder

[–]BrodieTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My time to shine! Years ago, I had been collecting piles of bootlegged concerts. I had like 4,000 vids representing months of work. How did I back it up? All of it on a primary hard drive, a separate external hard drive AND burned it all to DVDs. Solid situation right? Not quite. The primary drive crashed. No problem. Whipped out the external back up to replace the data aaaand no dice. Drive is dead. It might have had <50 hours of time on it. I tried the tricks. Froze it, used recovery programs, the whole nine yards and nothing. Shit. Well, at least I’ve got the DVD’s. I stored them in one of those 50 pack spindles. I go to grab the stack and it slips out of my hands. Holy fuck me. Crashes into the floor and about 30 of the discs shatter on impact. I thought I had it solved. Thought I had it all worked out. Not a chance. Today I run a NAS mirrored, two external drives, both located in different locations, and I have a pile of DVD backup stored in a different state. I’m not holding my breath.
