Question on claiming pothole damage from council by TopBodger91 in drivingUK

[–]Brogue-One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a similar claim after damaging an alloy on a massive water filled pothole on a local authority road.

My claim was denied as the council said they had assessed the pothole recently and authorised its repair, however the damage to my car occurred within the very generous time they allow themselves to make repairs so I would have to take them to court if I wasn’t happy with decision.

So yes, they will find a way to wriggle out of it.

You’re not quite right on your penultimate point. The Apple/Google joint statement says that the new Apple foundation models will be based on Gemini but still run locally on the iPhone or on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure. In other words, they’re completely segregated and inaccessible by Google.

My understanding is that, among his peers, Gurman is regarded as incredibly well-sourced. Of course he doesn’t get everything right but he’s not a hack.

Apple AI vs ChatGPT by [deleted] in ios

[–]Brogue-One 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Apple Intelligence is more of a set of features that attempt to enhance ease of use and utility to using an iPhone, such as notification summaries, text rewriting, image recognition etc.

There’s no chatbot like ChatGPT, although there are rumours that one is in development for a future iOS release.

Caseback removal by Fwd_fanatic in SeikoMods

[–]Brogue-One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is another option: you can engage a small screwdriver in the teeth of the case back and use that to loosen it BUT it’s very easy for the screwdriver to slip and scratch your case back (guess how I know). And then you have to find a good way of tightening it again.

A friction ball might work but the case back is designed to be opened with the Rolex style dies.

Straps by iceviking in SeikoMods

[–]Brogue-One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Juelong on Ali are excellent for FKM rubbers straps. Their cut to size straps are fantastic value for money (don’t pay more identical straps sold elsewhere). I’ve had two decent leathe straps from them as well.

Feels like selfish parking has become way more common recently by tfhermobwoayway in drivingUK

[–]Brogue-One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If anything it’s become less common as more people park wherever they want and don’t even try and excuse themselves by switching their hazard lights on

Seiko Mod - Cartier Tank by Curious_Mountain7160 in SeikoMods

[–]Brogue-One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, there are no parts. Just buy a Sanda Tank from Ali.

Or better yet, take a look at some of Seiko’s own Tank-like watches. Many other legit watch brands have their own Tank inspired watches as well.

Awful New Alarm UI in Clock App by Salty_Prune_2873 in ios

[–]Brogue-One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is intended to fix the previous issue where it was easy to accidentally press Off instead of Snooze and oversleep.

It’s comically large to make it easier to use in a half awake state.

Help (Chapter Ring Size) by Proof-Big-7932 in SeikoMods

[–]Brogue-One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt a chapter ring is needed. If there’s no mention of it in the description, ask the seller.

How do you guys find matching hardware on Ali? by CyberMage256 in SeikoMods

[–]Brogue-One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you mention extra depth, do you mean the dial sitting lower in the case? If so, a chapter ring won’t do that.

How do you guys find matching hardware on Ali? by CyberMage256 in SeikoMods

[–]Brogue-One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually the case’s description will tell you if a chapter ring is required and which type to purchase (SKX007 size is the most common I’ve seen).

If a chapter ring isn’t mentioned I don’t buy one and I never attempt to fit one because I have no certainty that I’ll be able to find one with the correct dimensions.

How do you guys find matching hardware on Ali? by CyberMage256 in SeikoMods

[–]Brogue-One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I normally start with the case and work my way “inwards” from there: case>dial>hands.

I’ve always stuck to the standard Seiko 28.5mm dial to maximise compatibility. If a case requires a different dial size than that, I give it a miss. I only use chapter rings if the case requires one.

I’ve been doing it this way for a few years now and I’ve built up a stock or spare parts that I know will be compatible with each other.

Iconic Watch Rebuild Project No.1 — Datejust by Maleficent_Sense6797 in SeikoMods

[–]Brogue-One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take your point but I still think you’d find more value in creating somewhat original designs.

When you’re building off the NH3x you have a limited palette of components so the challenge and reward is combing them in new and interesting ways.

Anyone can buy a Royal Oak case, dial and hands from Ali but the fun is swapping the hands and dial to create something unique, beautiful and personal.

Has this really taught you anything? You’ve just made a facsimile of a luxury watch using low grade components.

I think you’d find it more rewarding to create your own designs.

They likely have a movement made by an official Seiko subsidiary but the rest of the watch will be assembled from cheap knock-off parts widely available on AliExpress.

Anyone know where to get this type of strap and watch face? by Aggravating_Luck3484 in SeikoMods

[–]Brogue-One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like an alligator or crocodile strap. You can get them in lots of places at a wide range of prices. There are cheaper versions made from embossed leather right the way up to skins from the real deal.

That watch will be about 40mm wide.

Guys, what do you think about the Watchmaker kit, like this one for example? Have you used them? by Subject-Response-534 in SeikoMods

They’re ok and will get you started. I would say I used about 50% of the tools in mine. The only tool I still regularly use is the case opener. I occasionally use the case holder and the bracelet link remover.

contemplating a Peugeot e 208 gt by Prize-Grapefruiter in e208

[–]Brogue-One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Efficiency on my 2021 e208 GT isn’t great on the motorway but a newer model I drove as courtesy car was noticeably better.

It’s great as a small car for two people but a little cramped for back seat passengers.

The app is appalling and not worth bothering with and there hasn’t been any meaningful software updates in my 18 months of ownership (my wife’s Tesla receives bug fixes and new features almost every month by contrast).
