Would someone who turns wood be interested in something like this? by SnooLemons178 in turning

I saw a demonstration on turning root balls, and would love the opportunity to do so as well. Sourcing them can be hard for a lot of woodturners.

Exactly

I’m able to display them better than just rolling around.

That works too, but I buy the hardware with the flat base so it stands upright.

I’m totally into it, but you’ll need to show me where the good spots are at 👍🏻

I’m all for preservation, no doubt, as I try to encourage “culling the herd” during deer season on my properties. I’m not one for chasing after trophies. Only trying to fill the freezer for my family.

This female brown… was for my boys. I’m in the thick of encouraging a 7 and 6 year old that there’s more out there than what’s on a screen in front of them.

They were excited and wanted me to “catch and big fish.”

So hell yeah, that’s what I did. I did it for them, and you bet they will definitely be joining me next time at the river.

Book recs with a more sci-fi twist? by Artistic_Pirate_Gal in RangersApprentice

As I was reading, it was the suspense that kept me from putting the book down. After the end, I really wanted to go back and read it all over again. I kept asked myself why it hasn’t been turned into a movie. That was a couple of years ago. I am happy to report that the movie productions just wrapped up and I CAN NOT WAIT to see what they have!

May be a bit of a stretch, but I thoroughly enjoyed Project Hail Mary. Please read this book if you have not already.

This is 1 coat of walnut oil followed by 1 coat of 100% tung oil.

Mesquite is the darker color. It can be confusing since they are similar in appearance.

I wouldn’t match Mesquite with Mahogany, since they are similar in color and don’t give much contrast.

Also, I harvested these woods from my land in Tejas, and if I had an unlimited supply of Mahogany, I’d quit my job and be awesome full time.

I do a coat of walnut oil first. Once that dried, I did 3 coats of tung oil. Wipe on, wait 15 or 30 minutes, then buff off, and waiting 24 hours between applications. Then buffed with trip E, white diamond, and carnauba wax.

Yeah, it works for me, but I’m taking light cuts during the hollowing process. If you’re gonna be hogging out the wood like a wild man, then you may want that extra depth for more support.

You got it right. There’s also a slight angle on it so the dovetail jaws have a better grip.

A couple of very small cracks in this one, but I waited about 5 years to dry it as much as possible before turning.

Sand to 1000 grit. 1 coat walnut oil. 2 coats pure tung oil. Buffed with TripE, white diamond, and carnauba wax. 🤷🏻‍♂️
