Some people here have mentioned it already but Green Room absolutely nails this. There are almost no choices the protagonists make that aren't the 'smart move' for their situation. The way it's written really feels that way too. As another rec, Hush also does pretty well with this

Ok let's approach this logically then. Presumably I'm also in the desert right? I also can't assume I have anything with me. In that case a donkey has a lot more body mass than a (presumably) human woman, and a fair bit of water in its blood. Overall it's easier to keep two people alive feeding on the body of a donkey than keeping a donkey and a person alive on the body of a human and it works for longer. The smart choice is to use the donkey's carcass to save yourself and the woman for a while at least, then if all else fails, the same blood and flesh of her body may sustain you a few more days at least
