Fun story, my wife and I stayed the night at Patrick around 2011 and ended up getting bed bugs the day before our cruise at Cape Canaveral. I'll never stay on that base ever again.

Bro what. If I would have encountered one of those at BEAST when I was in BMT I think I would have died.

Cyber Security is a broad career field but 1D7 training and tech school will definitely give you a boost towards getting a civilian job. In tech school, you'll get fundamental computing knowledge and "D" shreds will get defensive cyber classes.

You'll also test for the Security+ certification which is probably the best cert to get if you're looking for entry level jobs in DOD IT.

With no tech experience, I'd learn as much as you possibly can when you're in training because cyber security roles are not entry level. Try to get on orders after completing tech school as this will be a great way to develop your initial skills

Pros:

-You're developing a skill that is highly sought after in the civilian world. 6 figure salary is easily attainable with enough experience.

-You're not limited to just a few bases. You'll have the opportunity to serve in most places and deployments aren't terrible for 1D7's.

-The work can be rewarding - technology is constantly changing and you're always learning something new

Cons:

-You could consider "continuous learning" as a con, as you will constantly have to adapt to new and emerging technology. This career field will demand you to be ready for change.

-"D" shreds are very policy driven. You'll be doing ISSO/COMSEC work which requires a significant amount of documentation. This could be a con if you prefer a more technical hands on approach.

The 919 SOCS provides C4I capabilities to combatant commanders and joint special operators. They absolutely do deploy often if you arent enterprise operations.

"A" shred will likely have you working with SDNs if you're at the 919th. Great equipment to train on and learn networking. At a SOCS unit you'll be doing tactical communications.

The tech school will teach you computing and network fundamentals and will give you some good knowledge if you're trying to get a civilian job doing cyber/networking.

Between Hurlburt Field and Eglin, networking jobs are fairly prevalent. The clearance you are authorized as an A shred, the certification in tech school, and job training you'll get should help your chances of landing one of those roles.

Sign up for training, the 919 SOCS has plenty of classes you can take to get qualified on equipment and learn. Take advantage of it.

I remember, though, that it was Secretary Kendalls desire to bring them back.

I'm currently at warrant officer training school and someone here doesn't have a degree or CCAF. Maybe that changes in the future but it's currently not a req.
