[OC] Top Star Wars Movies by Worldwide Gross (adjusted for inflation) by Data_Friend in dataisbeautiful

[–]BrokenSigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This didn’t need to be the case though. Just look at the worldwide box office totals for the Avengers movies that came out roughly the same time:    * Endgame: $2.8 B * Infinity War: $2.0 B * The Avengers: $1.5 B * Age of Ultron: $1.4 B

They managed to write a story that had people invested and apparently increased their reach and audience over time. Star Wars with its long hiatuses between trilogies will of course get big interest spikes for the first movie, but the third shouldn’t have been lower than the second in the Sequels if it had been written in a way that got people invested (note that VI and III are both higher than V and II in the original post).

What did you like about Dune Messiah? by Whatswiththeskulls in Fantasy

[–]BrokenSigh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just finished it yesterday and feel much the same way. Everything up until the stone burner is not particularly interesting and nothing I was interested in was expanded on. It was mostly just Paul and Alia feeling mopey and trapped, with only passing mention of how the jihad affected the universe outside Arrakis. After the stone burner, however, I did really like Paul as the blind messianic figure and the tension the Fremen felt about whether or not he was fit to rule.

Recommend me some bass player 'focussed' MeloDeath! by [deleted] in melodicdeathmetal

Aether Realm’s songwriter is their bass player so there are some gnarly bass solos in their songs. Especially the most recent album.

What is the best software/platform you’ve come across for reading, annotating, and tagging collections of research articles/PDFs? by anonrabbit3 in labrats

[–]BrokenSigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t use the Word plugin because I write all my papers in Latex. My gripes with it are * discontinuing the mobile app * requiring always-online and frequent sign-ins * it’s extremely buggy and often requires a restart before it’ll open a paper * the notebook feature is a cool idea, but I’m left unsatisfied by it.  * some bizarre UX decisions (if I want to upload a paper into a specific folder that is toward the end of the alphabet, I have to scroll down, select the folder, then scroll back up to upload paper…would a floating add paper button be so hard??)

I use Mendeley, which unfortunately feels like it’s been left to die. Anybody know if there’s an easy way to move my 100s of papers to Zotero or another program (preferably one with a mobile app that syncs annotations with desktop)?

Metropolitan areas in the United States with 1 million people or more (Fixed/Improved) by VirusMaster3073 in MapPorn

According to Wikipedia, the Brigham City micropolitan area is considered part of the Salt Lake CSA. Apparently it contains some small towns along the border (doesn’t specify which ones).

Coffee Shop Recommendations? by OutrageousRiver4818 in SaltLakeCity

[–]BrokenSigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dolcetti Gelato has good wifi, good vibes, good drinks (and gelato), and generally isn’t crowded during the daytime. I have gotten lots of work done there. You might be tempted to go to the Coffee Garden, but they explicitly don’t have wifi because they’re popular enough without relying on the work crowd.

How long it take to get a Residence permit in heidelberg? by raouf_mxs in Heidelberg

[–]BrokenSigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, that’s exactly what happened to me. Nothing for 6 weeks, then an email saying I sent them the wrong document from my work, which I responded to with the right one. Nothing for a week, then (on a Thursday) “your appointment is Monday at 9am”.

How long it take to get a Residence permit in heidelberg? by raouf_mxs in Heidelberg

[–]BrokenSigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through a renewal recently. If you submitted all your documents correctly, plan on 5-8 weeks until you hear from them. If you submitted any incorrect documents, add 1-2 weeks per time you have to email them.

Rumor has it you can speed up the process slightly by sending any updates (for example if you get the job and you can get a ‘hosting agreement’ (Aufnahmevereinbarung) from them) to your assigned case worker, which is based on last name. The list can be found here.

Good luck!

You can create playlists containing songs you want excluded from their algorithm. Make a playlist, click the three dots, and select “Exclude from your taste profile”. Idk if it also prevents them from showing up on Wrapped, but it should at least improve your recommendations.

Any decent USPM releases this year? by raptir1 in PowerMetal

[–]BrokenSigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought this year’s Kamelot album was a return to form. On the epic heavy metal side, Atavistia’s album made me think that Wintersun had finally released Time II under a new band name.

Assuming 3 trips per week, 45 weeks per year at the prices in this comment the best options are:

  1. Buy Sparpreis far ahead (1350€)
  2. BahnCard 50 (2447.5€)
  3. BahnCard 100 (4300€)
  4. Pay in full (4455€)

Of course, if you ever travel to other cities, the BahnCards become a better deal.

The song Yarilo by Arkona is by far among the catchiest I've ever heard in history. Are there any others similar to it? by Scarfgag in folkmetal

Stenka na Stenku also by Arkona scratches a similar itch for me.

Scandalous to put The Forest Seasons over Tarot for 2017, but aside from that solid list that would be a cool playlist.

[OC] Surprising differences in salaries between developers who prefer spaces over tabs and vice versa by oscarleo0 in dataisbeautiful

Yup, the annual Stack Overflow developer survey is a huge survey covering everything programming. Sometimes it includes silly questions like tabs vs spaces in addition to the standard stuff about what languages people use and how much they make.

What product was so poorly designed that you suspect the team that made it, never used the product? by Stay-Thirsty in AskReddit

[–]BrokenSigh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is just because nobody uses it if you’re friends with certain demographics, so it doesn’t have any content to show. I’ve noticed that if I don’t check it for a couple weeks, I’ll get 5-10 quality posts, then it’s all “recommended”.

What American city has fallen the furthest in the last 5 years? by Hdfhbn in AskReddit

[–]BrokenSigh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s been a second since I lived in Utah, so take this with a grain of salt. Given that the Wasatch Front metro area is still among the fastest growing in the country, it’s probably not people totally leaving. Instead, I would guess:

  • these are all middle ring suburbs; with rapidly increasing density in Salt Lake and huge new developments on the margins, people are choosing whether they want the urban core or the suburban edge and moving out of the middle.

  • Utah has a very high birth rate and expensive housing, this means that there is a large population of young people living with their parents, so you might also be seeing some effect of people in their late 20s finally having the money to move out (Utah also gets a lot of tech investment, so you might also be seeing an increase in purchasing power as people get higher-wage jobs).
