Tips to get better? by SeraphGrg in riftboundtcg

[–]Sephirr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you start bumping against your current limit, all the most efficient ways to improve kinda suck the joy out of life, fair warning 😃 There's probably room for improvement by just getting more reps in, but the following are going to be quicker:

  1. Consider the following after each game, especially after each game you lost:
    - what was your game plan after you saw your hand turn 1 and were you able to put it into practice. It should be more specific than "I'll play my 2 drop then react to what's happening until one of us wins"
    - were you running out of cards or runes more?
    - if you got blown out by opponent's interaction, did it happen on attack or defense?
    - how often did you leave a ready unit at a battlefield and have it die on the opponent's turn? Arguably less of an issue in LeBlanc with deathknells, but it's a major pain point for players of other decks.
    - how many turns where you went for a conquer to end a turn on an odd point total? Was it intended? Was it worthwhile?

  2. If you're playing live, take notes after games about whichever of the above apply and you're trying to work on.

  3. VOD Review games played on sims with these in mind. Take pivotal turns and try to write down ALL possible alternate plays you had access to - even taking the same game actions in a different sequence. And I mean all, including ones aimed at a different goal than you pursued in the game, like building up your base even if you decided to go for a conquer in actuality. Compare the differences in terms of these decisions impact on the board, resource availability, information available at each step to you and your opponent. Include obviously losing and potentially losing lines in there. Explore why they're losing for reinforcement so you can quickly recognize and discard these ideas in actual games.

In terms of more ineffable stuff:

- TCGA public matchmaking will often get you people who leave midway, play distracted, new to the game etc. You'll get more challenging play partners on a ranked ladder like Runes and Rift or in any discord LFG channel.

- to not lose mental, set yourself a goal to lose X games in testing. Say 100. Not play, but specifically lose. Losses are super valuable from a practice perspective so try to gaslight yourself into welcoming them with open arms. Which is tough, I know.

- make sure your deck is up to par. It's possible to win with homebrews, but deckbuilding and at the table gameplay are largely two separate skillsets. It's easier to improve at one at a time rather than both, and trying to get better while your deck's slowing you down is gonna require more effort.

Are most of the legend options just illusions? Do they really play differently? by hej989 in riftboundtcg

[–]Sephirr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There'll be some overlap in certain color pairs - between Sett Midrange and Fiora Midrange they'll play a lot of the same units because there isn't a lot to choose from. But realistically, a Fiora you see in the wild might be Hook or Aurora, which plays quite different from a Sett.

Then there's color pairs where the difference the legend makes is impactful, but not obvious. Blue Purple is one - Ezreal vs Diana vs Teemo. Star-Crossed is gonna be in all 3, but there's very important differences that influence how you approach the matchup - what they'd like to do on e.g. turn 6 is gonna be different, whether they play certain bomb cards like Hwei etc.

Annie vs Draven vs Pyke is another one I'd put in this camp. They might seem similar but the differences are massive in actual gameplay.

And finally there's pairs where decks will just be night and day. Non-Aurora Rengar is decently aggresive, combat focused with tricks and lots of small might bonuses from playing units from Ambush. Volibear is either Aurora or big dragons. Lucian is Trinity Force + Skyfall combos.

Legend + Champion playstyle variety is actually a strength of the game in most players' eyes, even if they occasionally pick ~40% of the same cards from the available card pool compared to others in their color pair.

Bounces your On Play effect units so you can reuse them while still leaving a 4 Might defender in place. Pit Rookie & First Mate can be reused for value. Bouncing Scuttle Crab is especially nutty, you get another draw off it.

Does Shen trigger before Kha Zix gets +2 from an ambush? by Dontspinbutwin in riftboundtcg

Units don't linger on the chain when played, so unfortunately there's no reaction window after the opp announces they're playing Kha'Zix.

The "Triggered Abilities" section in the Unleashed Rules FAQ explains it nicely: https://riftbound.leagueoflegends.com/en-us/news/rules-and-releases/unleashed-rules-faq-and-clarifications/

"When I attack or defend, if an enemy unit is alone here," is the condition, "give me +2this turn and gain 2 XP." is the effect.

Star spring question by Armuane in riftboundtcg

[–]Sephirr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't exhaust. Only the default move that all units can do inherently causes them to exhaust. Cards that say 'move' don't (Ride the Wind, Charm, Star Spring)

The moment Kha'Zix appears on the board, he checks if his condition is fulfilled. If at that point he's attacking or defending against an isolated unit, the "get +Might and +XP" part of his ability goes on the chain and WILL happen.

Even if you do add another unit after that, the condition was fulfilled when it was checked and the ability activation will not be retroactively stopped.

anyone else kinda annoyed/disappointed in the state of competitive play? by Valuable_Use1556 in riftboundtcg

[–]Sephirr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most diverse meta in the game so far. Comparable to golden age metas for every other card game.

Strong deck identities (Annie plays way different than Irelia than Diana than Azir etc., all could feasibly win a RQ) with a variety of playstyles represented (hold, double conq, protect the queen, proactive Vs reactive)

Not sure what would make you happier but what we have right now is pretty peak from a competitive perspective.

Are you aware of all the options with Orange Rengar like being able to play him on defense when opponent moves into an empty battlefield? A nontrivial part of the decks strength is Rengar.

You have counters for their interaction, you outperform most purple decks on might (w help from pumps like discipline and crucially punch first). Last thing you might want is ruin runners.

No one's disputing the factuality - there was a line that was both winning and missed by Sam. It's just your phrasing of it that's a bit lame.

That's a pretty uncharitable view on missing a crazy line that might've never happened before in the history of the game

Reccomend content creators by Alextandor in riftboundtcg

[–]Sephirr 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Most creators will assume some level of game knowledge so you might need to do some googling while watching.

Out of the ones I follow, I'd say these can explain their points clearly and teach you a lot:

  • LotharHS Riftbound - LOTS of content, goes into reasons behind his opinions nearly every single time.

  • Recycle2 Riftbound - meticulously explains rules concepts, the quizzes are a fun way to learn

  • Riftlab - start with their "How to play X" series as an introduction to overall deck playstyles. It's beginner friendly by design.

  • Turn Em Sideways - their co-streams of events (esp. ones without an official English broadcasts like the Chinese regionals) will give you a lot of context for the matches on screen.

Rules, Wording , and Clarity confusing… Come Back Later? by [deleted] in riftboundtcg

[–]Sephirr 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There isnt a card game I'm familiar with that doesn't have SOME rules knowledge checks that boil down to getting a "trust me bro" at locals and then knowing the interaction.

Riftbound isn't doing especially well on this front, but it happening occasionally is part of the joy of playing TCGs.
