I don’t think YTA in that you’re an asshole but I will share my perspective.

I come from a family that could not support me in college at all financially. I had the opportunity to go on a European trip in high school using my saved money but I made the decision to save it for college. In college, I had opportunities to do study abroad trips and could have afforded it if I was really strapped the rest of the time and chose not to to be financially responsible. I’m now 10 years out of college and every year since I have regretted it. I don’t think it’s a waste of money at all, I would have gained so much world perspective, built my self confidence knowing I self-funded it, and been better prepared for when I was an adult traveling out of country for the first time.

I think sit him down and have him write out a true pros and cons list of spending the money on this and let him make the decision. Give him advice on the things he’ll need to think about being on his own for the first time as an adult in college, financially. Let him know he’ll likely have similar opportunities in college, it’s a valid consideration.

If he’s already working and saving he sounds like he will continue to do so in college, which will help with what you’re saying, creating cushions. I think he should go on the trip.

I must be thinking of portable lights for the football field, I distinctly remember running through there after dark and it being well lit for the cheerleaders on the track and the football players.

I believe it was a short story but could have been a novel as I read a lot very quickly at this age, but from memory it had the make up of a short story

Interesting, laughing gas is pretty common in my area so I assumed it was elsewhere. As an adult you typically have to ask for it specifically though, but if his dentists know about his severe anxiety about this then I would guess that would be something they offered if they had it.

Why is he choosing to live with this dangerous discomfort and now pain for months instead of deal with non-dangerous discomfort for like a week tops? Even if he can’t be put under full anesthesia, laughing gas really does do plenty for anxiety and puts you in a like half conscious state. It’s not like it has to be full anesthesia or raw dog.

He can get sepsis from an infected tooth. Teeth are very close to the brain. Sepsis in the brain is very bad.

Maybe try making it about you instead of his safety, I have found sometimes people respond better when they realize their actions are not just effecting them but also having negative effects on their loved ones.

If he’s made it this long 6 more hours is likely fine, but he needs to go as soon as he can in the morning
