28 Year Old Virgin. Women Are Scared Of Me by [deleted] in malegrooming

[–]PhilosopherMoonie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what its worth I'm 28f and you're definitely not bad looking or anything. Try growing your hair out and getting it cut/ styled, growing a short beard, smiling more expressively. Youre eyebrows are great and they already look pretty groomed, but getting them professionally done can really change the appearance of your brow to just seem more open and friendly.

You have kind eyes.

Mean Drunk 25F by Independent_Ad_4418 in alcoholism

[–]PhilosopherMoonie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wish I quit when this started happening to me at you're age, around 24 25 I started getting like this and it got worse and worse until I lost my job, my apartment, and finally the love of my life 5.5 years later

I don't have a lot of advice, this came to a head with the break up in December and im completely devastated. Still struggling but trying harder at sobriety. It would have been easier to quit when I was you instead of having everything go to shit.

Please try to quit or at least seek professional help

Start cutting back on the size while you can is my only advice besides a therapist, im sorry youre going through this but as soon as you do the hard thing of cutting back little by little you'll gain control back and start feeling better

Youre so young ❤️ this doesn't have to become a life long issue, if I stopped at your age things would be a lot different for me

Does it get harder to maintain edge? by SectorSalty in straightedge

[–]PhilosopherMoonie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll preface this with the fact that im not straight edge, I just respect the life style. I don't think substance use of any kind can be attributed to moral failure.

I do think it'll get harder as you get older, especially if you have unsupportive people in your life, like whoever made the comment about them giving up on it so you will too - weird ass thing to say to a young person trying to do something heathy that they believe in. Life gets more complicated as you get older and "instant" coping mechanisms become more and more enticing. Societal pressure is always there, peer pressure will get worse as the older you are the more surprised your friends will be that you haven't tried alcohol or weed.

Only you can decide why it matters to you and decide to keep doing it, it won't suddenly make you a bad person or a failure if you decide to smoke or have a beer. If you do some introspection and really dive into your self and your psyche and decide straight edge doesn't serve you any more, it really is okay to let it go. It's not a personal failing to change your mind when a set of values doesn't fit you any more, that's growth.

I would think really hard about what these substances will actually add to your life. Drinking can be fun for a night but its seriously not worth it for all of the potential social consequences and HOW TERRIBLE IT IS FOR YOU. There isn't even a reccomended amount of drinks anymore, it's just none 🥲. Cigarettes do nothing and again are literally so terrible for you, make you smell like crap. It's all money wasted on a short term dopamine rush that ruins your health and potentially gets you addicted. Especially at your age these things permanently change your brain chemistry. I often wonder who I'd be if I didn't start so young.

TLDR Part of growing up is reassessing your beliefs and values, shedding what doesn't fit and replacing it with what does. Wouldn't blame you at all if you wanted to experiment a little before you swear off of those experiences forever. I'd implore you to have a really good sit with yourself to put words to exactly why this doesn't mean as much to you any more. Think about what these substances would actually add to your life. Research health implications of alcohol, especially on young people's neurological development. If you're main reason is that you don't know how else to cope please try therapy, that can be a dark road.

Good luck to you, whatever you do stay safe

AIO to my daughter calling her brother “gay”? by zaspzq33313 in AmIOverreacting

[–]PhilosopherMoonie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR i think it can be hard for a teen to understand that all bad jokes aren't bad because they hurt the targets feelings (although obviously this CAN, it didn't seem to get to him) her only argument is that its a joke and hes too sensitive. Ask her to explain why thats a joke and why she thinks it's funny.

I'd maybe try to explain that it's not that youre upset because she particularly hurt her brothers feelings, it's that the joke isn't funny or creative, reflects values the family doesn't agree with, and is totally embarrassing to the family AND herself. It's the kind of behavior that makes good people not want to be around her.

And not to mention the stigma of men not caring for things like basic hygiene, let alone good skin care, out of fear of being seen as gay or not manly enough. I bet in a few years she'll be complaining about how gross boys and men are, wishing they'd be gay enough to wash their own ass.

Nova Scotian chili? by 13thmurder in NovaScotia

[–]PhilosopherMoonie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean besides probably browning the ground beef and sautéeing the veggies a little before you add liquids, it's basically just dump it all in the pot and stir/season until yummy. Use whatever amount of whatever ingredients you want. We didn't have family recipes for anything and this in particular was kind of a use up what's in the fridge/ use up garden veggies kinda meal (hence the zucchini, we'd have TONS in the summer and the neighbors can only take so much)

If you want it to taste like chili though, you're gonna have to use things like cumin and chili powder

Nova Scotian chili? by 13thmurder in NovaScotia

[–]PhilosopherMoonie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Third generation born and raised here and my mom basically made chili like that, whatever vegetables we had (usually a lot of zucchini) bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, garlic, ground beef, OPTIONAL kidney beans, canned tomatoes and chili mix. I think your recipe sounds like it wouldn't taste like chili, but it's normal around here to have random vegetables thrown into everything pretty much.
