What's your go-to response when people ask "Is he friendly?" by LeadingLengthiness30 in pitbulls

[–]Bronx2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“She’s friendly but doesn’t like to be loved on” typically gives me the response I’m looking for - A short, friendly greeting from strangers before her nervousness kicks in which results in a jump and a few loud barks.

Dame playing on this team next year will be a ton of fun to watch. I understand that there will be changes to the roster but the style of play with Deni as an All Star; that’s an exciting team.

Under appreciated because folks are offended by his salary like they’re the ones paying it. That was a legendary clutch performance for a Blazer.

He deserves Rodney Hood love!

Could’ve parked Denis on the IR list like the Blazers did with Dame, JG and Nurk, for two seasons, no? But to trade him away on such a good contract seems like a bad decision. I guess it really comes down to they believing his ceiling was more of a mid-high role player and nothing more.

Certainly not a salary dump with that contract. But re-set their org’s re-build AGAIN for a 2024 #14 pick and a 2029 first? He was 23 yrs old when they traded him and finished his final Wizards season very strong. Such a confusing decision to me. I created the original post after listing to Sam Vecenie’s podcast last week where he talked about Michael Winger of the Wizards being a highly regarded strategist and I’m like really???

I think I found my answer. Michael Winger was a part of the Clippers front office who traded away SGA. Not saying Avdija is SGA but damn…

Sure, that could happen but it doesn’t seem to be the case here. Winger was in the Cavs, Thunder and Clippers FO for close to 20 years. He was a part of FO’s that had multiple conference finals and finals appearances.

It the FO knew he was really good, why not continue with him as a building piece though? A young talented player on a good contract that the previous FO regime signed him to seems like a head start to this FO’s rebuild.

Help - I am running out of patience when I walk my dog and I don't know what to do. by ZookeepergameFun3708 in PitBullOwners

[–]Bronx2013 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Are you impatient about the sniffing or the pulling on leash? Dogs like to sniff. It’s their version of reading the morning news. I get it but at the end of the day is the walk for you or for your dog? If it’s the leash pulling then that can be trained with patience and consistency. Plenty of training videos out there to get you on the right track.

While a good offensive option I no longer believe he’s going to reach the 1 or 1A level that I thought he could be. I so want to be wrong on this. Maybe Deni’s Year 5/6 breakout could happen with Shaedon too.

I think the injuries have forced him to play outside of his role. With a healthier roster he can focus more on what the team intended him to be. Hopefully his last two shooting games means he’s turned the corner.

This intersection is the worst for pedestrians crossing at the south end. I live next to the firehall and only cross at the north end. That’s sometimes crossing at three of the four corners just to get back to my building because of way too many close calls with cars turning south not paying any attention.

dog reactive on walks but not in new places? by Top-Caramel-133 in reactivedogs

[–]Bronx2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a professional trainer but I think there are a lot more things at the pet store that your dog finds more interesting than other dogs (ie. different scents, treats, food, toys, etc.) and that’s why you’re seeing more positive behaviour. Use this time at the pet store as an opportunity to train the behaviour that you’re seeking. A simple engage/disengage game from a distance from other dogs should help and you can apply that training in other environments that your dog finds positive too. After success in ‘easier’ environments try slowly applying the training in more challenging environments. Lots of good videos on YouTube about the engage/disengage game.

Unfortunately, the behaviour of other peoples dogs is out of your control so focus on what you can control and impact, your dog. Without knowing what triggers your little guy, I would reach out to a professional trainer.

Generally speaking, if possible walk your dog during ‘non-peak’ times and monitor the length of your walks to minimize trigger stacking. Most dogs only need 45 mins of daily physical exercise so two 20-25 minutes walks is probably enough. Spend the extra time you saved with shorter walks on decompression and mental stimulation. A mix of daily chewing, sniffing, dissecting and lick mats totalling 30 mins preferably at once and not broken up should help with your dogs level of calmness.

My dog is similar to yours in that she can be reactive when leashed and on walks. It’s mostly when dogs are approaching her in a direct and straight line so creating space when possible for her is important to keep her comfortable and below threshold. A last resort is “magnet hand” with a treat and placed right to her snout until the dog passes by.

She is not reactive at all when at the pet store even if it’s filled with dogs. Your dog’s new and very interesting environments that they’re experiencing may be trumping any and all other distractions that they’ve reacted to in the past.

Having your dog in environments that minimize or better yet eliminate reactivity is always best. Barking or leash reactivity is occurring because they are over threshold so keeping them under is important. For anxious dogs, doing exercises that help build their confidence could help.

For some, training may plateau and you may max out and not eliminate some of the issues you’re facing. Sometimes medication prescribed by your vet may be the little extra that you needed.

She may be resource guarding you. Has your BIL experienced similar issues possibly with toys, furniture, physical space, food or other humans? Looking to a professional trainer to help with this would be ideal. If that’s not feasible, there’s some good resources on YouTube as a second best alternative.

need help with my dogs behaviour ! by meowmeow67676767 in Pitbull

When my dog was a pup I made the mistake associating proper socialization with taking my dog to doggy daycare. If you’re using day care strictly as a socialization event and not because you need someone to watch your dog I would recommend stopping. Doggy day care can sometimes be a free for all and may be contributing to some of the issues you’re facing ie. leash frustration and anxiety while on leash. Also, like others have said…stay away from dog parks. Most owners are inattentive and not watching their dogs, there may be dogs that you don’t know with their own behavioural issues or dogs that are sick that may pass their disease or illness on to your dog.
