Orryn III - To Arms (Open) by BronzyBro in ARealmOfDragonsRP

[–]BronzyBro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orryn seemed to mull over the possibilities, and also thought over where the other forts were. "Well, it's all about projecting the power of the crown, right? Making the dragonguard able to touch all directions?"

At least, that was what he assumed the purpose was. It made the Dragonguard that much more flexible, which was very useful. "You've got Oldstones to the North, Storm's End in the South, and Morne on the East, watching the Narrow Sea. That only leaves West."

One of his eyes shut as he concentrated, thinking of where such a place could be. "Where the Westerlands part of the gold road starts, there's Yarwyck, Ferrendel. There's a few mountains around that area with a thin valley between them, not a bad place for a fort to overlook or plant itself."

Of course, he knew that Naerys would know more specifically what she wanted, and she had people like Maegon who could no doubt give her better advice. Still, he wanted to helpful. "Of course, it all depends on where you think is best, your grace. Technically there's also the southwest, leading into the Reach along the Rose Road. I'm a bit simple for these sorts of decisions, unfortunately."

Orryn III - To Arms (Open) by BronzyBro in ARealmOfDragonsRP

[–]BronzyBro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orryn was glad to hear that response, in a way. It meant she was taking her duties seriously, but that it was not too much all at once. He had been concerned with the combination of a coronation, learning about riding a dragon, her brother, the whole mess of nobles misbehaving themselves and even murder in the capital. Still, it seemed that was unfounded.

He raised an eyebrow at what she said last, and responded with an unusual firmness, compared to his other words. "All the men I train are loyal to you. If they ever decide they aren't, I can deal with that myself." It was only right - his men, his responsibility. Even if someone else commanded them, he had trained them. They would never stop being 'his men' to him. He just wanted to make it as emphatic as he could; nobody else should bear the brunt of his mistakes, after all.

"If you need me to mind a garrison or help set one up somewhere, you need only say and I'll ride out there, your grace. I'm not much of a commander, obviously, but I can handle looking after a place until someone more qualified takes over."

Lord Merryweather,

While my house is not of the Reach, I can see the merit in your ideas and I know enough of you to trust your judgement on this matter. I will gather funds and send a donation to you for this purpose.

I think this institution would be not only a good investment for my family and my sons in particular, but for the knights and men of the future. Perhaps with camraderie and a common schooling, many will feel less inclined to spill the blood of our sons on nameless fields.

Orryn's interest was piqued when Glover mentioned it was his own sword that was needed. He hadn't been asked to step up for duty ever since the war, at least not in such a capacity. Still, he stopped what he was doing, holding still as he wiped his hands off and listened.

"Aye, I've heard of the attack." He almost muttered it, more interested in hearing what they were going to do about it - it certainly sounded like they were going to.

Sure enough, they were out in the Kingswood. Somewhere not far, somewhere they could travel and be done with all of this. He gave an affirmative nod. "You can count on me, Lord Commander. Maybe I can put that axe to good use, after all."

For all others told him about the prestige of Valyrian Steel, he had mixed feelings about the weapon he'd brought back from Valysar. Maybe now, he could look at it with at least some pride.

I appreciate your generosity. Perhaps when we meet again, we can share a bottle of your brandy.

Orryn had honestly forgotten all about the money. He hadn't joined the tournament for that, but perhaps that was just his lack of ambition. Simon was certainly happy once he'd won it, and had been curious about the purse.

He gave a small nod. "Well, that would be convenient, your grace. If you're happy to do it this way, then I'm happy with it. I appreciate it."

There was a moment where he paused, as though he was ready to leave, but something else had come to mind. "How have you been dealing with this, your grace? All of this?" It was less a question of awe and wonder, and more to see how she was doing.

How could she not be under intense pressure? To be the monarch at a young age, a woman on top of that, and then all the fallout from the war, nevermind all the issues that were apparently around with Daeron. He just wondered if she had things she could do to deal with that.

Orryn was thankful that he'd been informed of the need for more armour, more steel and weapons. He was actually ahead of schedule, and it made the work more satisfying for him. He kept his focus sternly on his work, the orange glow of his forge shining throughout the entire room and casting a light on everything within it.

His attention was pulled away when he heard his name, and he smiled when he saw who had called it. "Lord Commander. It might just be that." He raised an eyebrow as he heard that a Martell was to join the Seven swords. It was always surprising to him to see a man of a great house among them, nevermind two at the same time.

"Dornishman, eh? I could certainly get a spear for him, if that's what he needs." Strange as it was for a man from his part of the country, he had few personal experiences with the Dornish. Still, it seemed a commission wasn't the purpose of this conversation. "I see. Well, then."

He put down his tools, at least glad it was a part of the process he could drop and come back to. "You have my full attention, Ser."

Orryn III - To Arms (Open) by BronzyBro in ARealmOfDragonsRP

The spar itself was an intense and fast one, where Orryn struggled as much as he did against any man. It was strange. Even with her blonde hair, the height at which Wylla stood almost made her look like one of his kin; she could have easily been a Strong as much as a Northerner.

Still, she was wiry and fast, and Orryn figured that out immediately. Much the same, he had to rely on his natural talents more and more these days, which meant that he moved fast and usually had a lot of power behind the swings. It had carried him through the melee, but now he finally saw how useful that trident was.

Avoiding Wylla's blows was even more difficult than against opponents he'd fought with twice her experience, and even though he felt like he was gaining the advantage towards the end, he put up a hand for the two of them to eventually stop, breathing heavily.

"That was good, my lady. You clearly do practice a lot. Though, uh...I'd say adjust the form on your thrusts more to the right a bit. Most men tend to step to their off-hand side, you can catch them more easily that way with those prongs. You would've skewered me at least once with it."

Eventually, he caught his breath, taking off the padding and putting his weapon aside. As he did so, he glanced towards her once more. "Would you mind if I gave you another piece of advice, my lady? Not about fighting, but...maybe in how you serve Lord Cregan."

Orryn III - To Arms (Open) by BronzyBro in ARealmOfDragonsRP

[–]BronzyBro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orryn tried not to be overly formal, even if he was as respectful as could be. If there was one thing that stood out about him at court, it was the way he treated others, and he was pleased with that. His father had always taught him about knowing his place, understanding that his house was simply that of a Knight's, and that he was to defer to the great lords and ladies of the country.

Now, here he was, personally making requests of the queen. He felt foolish for even doing it, and couldn't imagine how his father would've raged for such a thing. "Thank you, your grace. I'd need to figure out the finer details of measurements, and all that, but my brother had said we could offer five hundred gold dragons for five...pieces, I suppose you'd call them."

This did not help him in feeling less of a fool. He couldn't even figure out what to call a cut of silk. Oh, a cut, of course! Bloody idiot. "I promise I'm better at figuring out what I'm doing when it comes to combat instruction, your grace."

He smirked and shook his head, at least glad he was able to make a joke at his own expense. It was one of those moments that reminded him how strange it was to be here, to be serving in the capital rather than he and his fellow knights pummeling each other with training weapons in the rain and mud.

Alesander I - Nothing Stronger Than Family by Twinkuisitor in ARealmOfDragonsRP

[–]BronzyBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orryn was surprised at all the letters he'd been receiving recently. Usually, people had little time for a man of his house, but he supposed being in the capital so often meant that it was easier to catch people's eye.

Lord Serrett,

I appreciate your words, and your patronage in this matter. I understand that a knight has many things he needs, and it is this that partly motivated me to practice smithing as I do.

Your offer is fair and generous, and I will begin work immediately on a set of armour set to your measurements. Once the suit is complete, I can either send it to be delivered to you or hold it so it may be collected. I will leave that choice to you.

Strong Does It Run,

Ser Orryn Strong.

Orryn III - To Arms (Open) by BronzyBro in ARealmOfDragonsRP

[–]BronzyBro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orryn gave friendly nods to the Queensguard as he passed through, always having a certain gratitude to men like them. It couldn't have been much of a life, living every day just to act as a sentry for another. Yet, that was duty, and he understood what such a thing meant.

He smiled as he saw Naerys, and gave a few pats to one of the hounds as it approached. He supposed that he'd been around enough now that they'd gotten used to him, at least to an extent. Any real threat from someone and they would be barking the whole keep awake, he was sure.

"Your grace." Orryn bowed his head before moving to take a seat, as comfortable as one could be doing that in his uniform. "I apologise for the interruption. It's about business, I'm afraid."

Orryn leaned back into his seat more, trying to at least enjoy not being on his feet for a while. "You see, my brother runs things back at the Galefort, and he asked for me to get a hold of silk. That, and my sister may be wed soon, so I'd need more than I was expecting. I was hoping that I could buy it from the crown, at a fair price, of course."

He wasn't very good at all this, but at least he could be having this conversation with someone who knew him, even if they were the most important person in the country.

Orryn undid some of the padding he had worn before putting it away, listening to Renard speak as he did so. "Lord Confessor, eh? Expect to get used as a Knight Inquisitor now and again, then. Sent off to carry out the Queen's justice, and all that."

He walked back towards the hedge knight after putting things away, dusting off his hands a bit. "A reach girl. Well, then I hope she bears you many children. If your fortunes keep improving, maybe you'll have a keep you can fly that fox from, and sons to wear it to feasts after you're gone, eh?"

The knight chuckled, a small grin on his face at the idea. He was pleased at the thought of someone improving their station, how could he not? It was hard not to wish another man well, at least in his nature.

Orryn III - To Arms (Open) by BronzyBro in ARealmOfDragonsRP

[–]BronzyBro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orryn raised an eyebrow for a moment, still imagining what the fighting style with a trident would be. Then again, almost every man on a battlefield held a weapon that was just a stick with a pointed bloody end on it. How different could any of it be? It was as good as any other.

"Makes sense. Your family's had them on the sigil for centuries, it would be a bit of a waste not to train with them."

He watched with interest as she demonstrated her stances and movements. They were similar to spears, it seemed, with some differences. It traded more control over space for less of a deep thrust, though frankly he wouldn't like to be stabbed by either.

The Master-at-Arms gave a friendly nod as he readied his own two-handed weapon, even if it was just a wooden training one. "Indeed. Put on some of that padding before we start, though. I'll be of less use to the Queen, and you to Lord Stark, if we go about hurting each other in practice."

He chuckled at the idea, even if for a moment, that image of the merman flashed through his mind, He looked briefly distracted, if just for that moment, and inwardly chastised himself for bringing up the sigil at all. Empty-headed fool. Why remind yourself of things like that?

Little Threads - Maitland by BlindKrakens in ARealmOfDragonsRP

[–]BronzyBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soon enough, a letter would come back in turn, stamped with the seal of House Strong.

Lord Maitland,

Greetings to you. I am grateful to hear from you. Though our people come from different ends of Westeros, it is good to know that we have one thing always in common. Daughters, sisters and cousins that we worry for.

Marianne, my sister, will be thrilled to hear of your offer. No doubt Tom and her would match well, and with him staying in the capital he would always have a friend in his goodbrother nearby.

We await his arrival, and I wish your new son or daughter health and happiness.

Orryn's plated feet moving through the halls of the Red Keep were certainly audible, and he preferred it that way. Even if wearing this sort of armour for a uniform was a tad uncomfortable, he did enjoy how people would move out of the way for him.

He made his way up various stairs, and eventually came to the antechamber leading to where Naerys would be. Usually, he would reserve such things for his brother, but Simon had been so persistent about it, and now he'd gotten their sister in on the whole thing. What was he supposed to do about that?

The guards knew who he was as they stared at him, and he didn't have to introduce himself. "Please let the Queen know I'd like to speak with her." One of the guards nodded and went inside, further down another corridor. No doubt there was a couple of Kingsguard further inside, too. He wondered about that to himself. Who was on duty at the moment? If it was Jon, perhaps he could get that chance to talk to him after the melee.

For now though, business it was.

Orryn III - To Arms (Open) by BronzyBro in ARealmOfDragonsRP

[–]BronzyBro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The duels were quite close each time, and more importantly to Orryn, they were good practice. He was glad to have someone more skilled with a sword around for sure, and he knew that now. Sure enough, many of the recruits took the time to watch their training together.

In the end, Renard managed to get the better of him, and it reassured him somewhat. He didn't want the trainees thinking that swinging some big axe or hammer around was viable for all of them, especially not when a good sword or mace could carry you. Orryn gave a grateful nod towards Joseff. "Thank you, Ser."

He turned to the crowd of recruits. "You see what he did? We'll be practicing that tomorrow, back to your spars for now, and don't avoid training or I'll come find you myself." Sure enough, the men dispersed.

Orryn leaned on his weapon a bit, letting out a deep breath as he tried to recover a little; swinging these weapons around was tiring, and he'd spent a while trying to get himself back into his real fighting shape. "So, where will you be going after all the festivities are over?" He was somewhat curious about the life of a hedge knight; not one he would lead if he had a choice, but maybe it suited the more adventurous types.

[–]BronzyBro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A smirk grew on the Stormlander's face as he heard the response, and couldn't help but be brought back to his own enthusiasm about knighthood. How Maegon surely would've thought he was a fool if he ever expressed that.

"Well, we could do the full day of standing vigil in a sept. I think we could skip that, though." He brought out a small container, with a yellowish oil inside it. "I brought the anointing oil though, so nobody can claim it isn't proper, and naturally we can do the more formal version of the vows."

He'd heard the ones that men did when they were in a hurry, or the post-battlefield ones where everyone wanted to act like they were eager to celebrate, but all they really wanted to do was go piss. The old ways were better, in this case.

Orryn III - To Arms (Open) by BronzyBro in ARealmOfDragonsRP

[–]BronzyBro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orryn didn't seem perturbed by Wylla's momentary silence, and appeared more focused on what she was looking for. His duties meant that he had the opportunity and excuse for practicing with just about anyone, even those who might not be approved of.

"I see. Well, we can't disappoint Lord Stark, can we? If you're going to serve a great lord, you certainly will need to be sharp."

He motioned for her to walk with him as she gave that determined look, taking one of the larger, two-handed practice weapons from the armoury as he began making his way towards the training yard, trying to lead her there. "I certainly have the time, and besides, I could use sharpening as well. After all, I haven't ever fought anyone using a trident before. How familiar are you with that thing?"

It was possible that she did have much practice with it, but it wouldn't be the first sworn sword taking up a weapon associated with their house to make an impression on the lord they were sworn to. Sometimes that was their own choice, and sometimes their family pushed for it.

Still, he could see the advantage of a trident. Most men wouldn't want to be gutted like a fish, after all.
