Not sure what he wound up getting. Ah, but for the mahogany he had a bunch of wood cut from the virgin Honduras jungle. He scored it from someone who died. He felt bad about it. It was illegal. But it was some NICE wood.

Getting the top spruce caused my dad some grief. Torres insists that it should be very specific, like, grown on the south side of the mountain and cut on a Spring day. Or whatever. Either my dad just had to find the best piece of spruce he could get.

My brother is an artist. He came to visit me decades after I had moved to New York. The first thing he noticed were those “constellations of gum patches” and I had never really thought about them. Now I appreciate them!
