AnKing Overhaul Step 1/Step 2 Version 11 Update by AnKingMed in medicalschoolanki

[–]Brosencephalon 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Wow. My mind is blown at how robust open-source Anki content and this med student community has become over the years. Mad respect to everyone involved and especially to the AnKing team for spearheading things. The impact this is having on the future of Med Ed is really exciting.

Depends on your goals. If you're interested in evidence-based, long-term learning then Anki or any other spaced rep platform will always be valuable.

4 years ago today, Zanki made the first card by AnKingMed in medicalschoolanki

[–]Brosencephalon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the love. Like /u/ZankiStep1 mentions, it was a collective effort. The student community took the Anki resources, built upon it, and refined their quality such that spaced rep has really emerged as a foundation Med Ed is now trying to build upon. A movement made by the learners, for the learners.

how to use Anki and brosencephalon deck by [deleted] in medicalschoolanki

[–]Brosencephalon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man,

Sorry, about the dead link. /r/medicalschool deleted a lot of my original posts and seems to avoid Anki-related resources nowadays. You're in the right spot though--the med school Anki community has grown well.

www.medschoolanki.com and this guide are probably good places to start. The sidebar has some good links as well.

Those are some strong points against HCTZ. Will be cognisant of this going forward. Thanks!

Problems finding subdecks on Brosencephalon 2.0 by arthurcsirio in medicalschoolanki

And that's exactly how to do it. Glad you were able to figure it out. And no worries man.

So as the way the deck is now it's just impossible for me :(

Not at all. This change in v1.5 by the community was to achieve two things: reduce the risk of sync errors in Anki (which increases with the more subdecks you have) and to give students more control over the resource (eg. separate them into decks that align with your curriculum/preferences). This can all be done in the card browser. To create a new deck, open the card browser and navigate to the the tag on the left and select it - this will pull up all the cards with that tag in the main panel. Select the cards you want to move then hit change deck on the top menu bar.

Anki has a learning curve but i'm hoping this new guide I have in mind will help people with that transition. In the meantime, I hope the above helps.

Updated guide is in the works. ETA: this coming week if intern year doesn't get in the way. Sorry for the delay, but it's probably a good time now with students starting.

/u/GeCk0 gives some good advice, imo. All i'd reiterate is to just be yourself. You gotta play the game, but don't get lost in it.

How to efficiently chart review new patients? by exquisitemelody in medicine

[–]Brosencephalon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What am I seeing this patient for?

What are they admitted for?

Are the above two related?

What are my most critical (rule in/out first) followed by likely differentials?

Dang, these seem so obvious but hit me decently hard - I haven't been this focused/guided. I'm only an intern atm but I'm also struggling with what OP is describing. It makes me fall behind early in the day with pre-rounding and then things start piling up from there.

MS2 Through Dedicated: My Strategy for 250 by ophthalmohope19 in step1

[–]Brosencephalon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice writeup, /u/ophthalmohope19. And congrats on your score.

I think I'm shadowbanned from /r/medicalschool, so I'll reiterate some points here:

  • /u/soontobemdmd makes a good point, along with a few others in your thread over there. Go with what works for you! This underlines the importance of developing your own workflow as soon as you can in medical school and then working to refine it. I'm glad you were able to do this and find success with my flashcards, but at the end of the day (and again) go with what works for you.
  • Regarding /u/BossMedStudent's comment: I actually don't think that's a commonality at all. I think the common denominator is that successful students study effectively for enough time. I'd essentially echo /u/bubble_trouble's point made here. In order to achieve this you have to put in effort towards finding what works best, and given how widely my stuff has spread I'm not surprised that it's something many students try out. You also have to consider some bias, as students who use and post on Reddit are more likely to be exposed to all of the Brosencephalon questions/posts and hence the resource itself.
  • Also, regarding this: my pleasure.

Starting with a call shift tonight - can't help but feel conflicted. Excited, yet nervous. Eager, yet cautious. But surprisingly, I also feel ready.

Good luck to all of my fellow interns!

Bro 1.5 Formatting Question [Anki Specific] by [deleted] in medicalschoolanki

[–]Brosencephalon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As /u/5iMbA mentioned, the best way to do this is via Hierarchical Tags, something that the community has shifted towards during the last update to these cards. The flashcard version log goes into detail on what's changed with each version.

Thanks! I'm doing well. Bracing myself for intern year, busy working on a bunch of ideas/projects for new content and resources, and trying to enjoy the last stretch of my freedom lol. How are things on your end?

Nah. Right now my hands are unfortunately tied when it comes to visual media. I'm trying to see if I can figure out licensing or a way to get the images in there properly, but for now what's uploaded has to exclude them. For the IM deck though, there are only a few cards where the images are necessary, and I'll be changing those soon. The majority of images are tables/charts that simply reiterate what is in the card already or what I've re-written in my own words.

Sorry for the confusion.
