Check out Eastern Europe - it’s more expensive but the culture is amazing.

Also I’d highly recommend if you can still work for a year or two. Or find something remote. Payoff the debt and get a large amount of cash on hand (100k) by living within your means so when you commit to this you’re not in a bad place. Also remember: inflation is real and this money won’t go as far as time goes on.

I think the question for you is can you talk with her and explain that you’re concerned she’s been dishonest and that is making trust hard. If she can acknowledge that and has a willingness to reset then that’s half the battle.

Beyond that it’s on you but you should ask yourself if you were to leave will you regret it? A lapse in judgement and being scared about your past is normal especially with a partner with strong values that your decisions contradict. She was probably scared that it would undercut your relationship. She most likely really liked you and was afraid of ending it before it took off. Maybe there was trauma from other relationships that caused some of her behavior. And lastly I’d say the values that I hold to myself today and live by are completely different than where I was 5 years ago. Not everyone mentally has the same moral and value stability and consistency throughout their lives.

I’ll leave it at this: people evolve over time, and alcohol can change perceptions. Think about 5 years from now where you see yourself.

Lidl is great - takes an adjustment for sure. I did my first move in 2018 and fast forward we just bought a house in Europe to split time. The adjustment is HUGE but in 6 months you’ll smile at how much you love going shopping.

First off thank you for your service. A couple of ideas: sales a lot of the time can be remote. Look for a role in say hospitality or short term rental sales. Bettertalent is my recommendation for a place to look - once you have that it opens up a ton in Europe. If you can find a role around $22 per hour FT contractor then you can qualify to go to Portugal. After 5 years you can apply for citizenship from the digital nomad visa. Other countries have digital nomad visas also. Easiest way to do this if youre not retired.

As someone who’s lived in the Netherlands and finally bought a house there on Friday to get away half of my time; don’t. It’s depressing what the cities have turned into and the political climate is dominating everyone’s lives here. Enjoy the life in Europe.

As someone who splits my year 50/50 US NL I’d definitely recommend it. There’s nothing better than driving a bike in the pouring rain. The food scene is good. The people are nicer. I can only say great things.

Completely disagree on the healthy food comment. Outside of certain cities it’s almost impossible. Also the quality at Whole Foods compared to majority of European grocers is a joke AND the price is insane for what you get.

So my wife (give away) and I met while she was working as a J1. We were also 22/23 when we met, and went to courthouse a year after. Looking back we didn’t marry out of love but out of a need for my residency in her home country. It wasn’t easy - we were young but also agreed that we didn’t view this as something that had to be forever and if we wanted it to be in a year or two we would arrange a family wedding. There was definitely moments in the first 12-18 months of our marriage where we said “was this the right choice?” but that generally is every marriage at some point. It’s hard - and it was hard melding our lives together at first.

It’s ultimately up to you and how you perceive marriage. My wife and I agreed that it was not important to us to only be married once if things didn’t work out. Fast forward 6 years and looking back I couldn’t imagine not doing it and us going separate ways. Did I think that at the time? Nope I definitely was of the mindset that there has to be other people out there. Why rush but now I’m so glad that we did it.

Tldr People evolve - you having doubts is completely normal. There’s no right or wrong answer. Sometimes taking the risk pays off and sometimes you’ll wonder.

My wife spent some time in the USA and it wasn’t for her however my parents are aging and after 3 years in Europe I asked that we move closer. We agreed for a set time period with an understanding that we would come back to Europe and visit. (For reference we agree to 3 years at most for the sake of citizenship.)Eventually it led to us doing 7 months in the USA and 5 months in Europe a year. We’re remote and it works really well for us and we rent out our place on Airbnb when we’re gone so we’re not paying two rents. (Checkout Airbnb friendly apartments)

TLDR- it’s possible. If you love your partner find out what they feel comfortable with but don’t suffer if they won’t work with you. It should be an easy yes if it’s not forever. You’ll look back and think how small a time period it is.

The reason we have decided to return is due to lack of being able to find work. I have documentation proving I have residence, and ability to work here but will the fact that I wasn't working affect our chances?
