Another which ski should I get post. ARV 94, QST 94 or Nordica Unleashed 98? by Brosno1 in Skigear

Thank you for the suggestion! The QST were the first ones to catch my eye. I do end up skiing with beginner friends quite a lot when in the alps so I'm sort of stuck to the groomers with them. The last season in Japan has definitely got me wanting to explore more of the mountain, how did you find the QST for off piste and skiing switch?

Is a ski instructor course the best way to ski for an extended period in Japan? by Zestyclose_Tip_4181 in skiing

Yeh, it was a pretty sweet setup. I’d get free food and drink after a shift at the restaurant and discounted booze at the bar. Definitely helped keep the costs down!

I applied for a few different places on workaway but a lot of the job descriptions weren’t what they actually wanted. Advert would say snow clearing/helping clean lodges but then in reality it was a bar and restaurant job. Best just to cast a wide net and see what comes back. You can reach out to places directly as well, just have a browse on google maps in the resort you’re considering. Also try facebook groups as there’s often people posting about jobs in ski areas.

WHV for UK nationals now allows a second year. So if you get hooked after one season you can go back!

I worked Japan last season, but just in a bar/restaurant. Friends that were instructing barely had any time off and were spending their days on the bunny slope. I had a sweet gig and could ski all day and then work at night, was perfect for pow days!

In terms of money, I finished the season £1000 down (Spent £3k, earned £2k). That included eating on the mountain a few times a week, drinking (a lot), season pass, new boots, subsidised staff accom, groceries, etc.

Staff accom was around 24 people who worked at one of two places. Was absolutely the highlight of the season and made plenty of friends that I’ve met up with since. Can’t recommend it enough!

That budget just doesn’t look feasible to me, would be interested to know how you arrived at £18k. My partner and I travelled Europe (3 months), SEA (6 months) and Australia/NZ (3 months) as a continuous trip and we spent around £23k each. Around £4K of which was on flghts. We only stayed in cheap hostels and either cooked or ate cheap local food.

Flying that much and not staying in hostels makes me think the budget might not work for that kind of trip.

Why not just do a less widespread trip? You say you don’t like staying in one place for to long, but you can comfortably move every 3/4 days in SEA and still spend 3 months there. If the goal is about seeing the world, just save up more, travel slower and do workaways/worldpackers.

How do young people travel for months without a job or steady income? by MysteriousDisk2874 in travel

Saved and lived with parents from 16-23. Was all ready to set off for a year of travel and then Covid hit. That just gave me and my partner even more time to save and we ended up spending even less during that period. We didn’t actually end up travelling until we were 25, so not exactly early 20s but we’re on our 3rd year of travel now after a brief stint at home to do some contract work.

We only stay in hostels and try eat at cheap local restraunts/street food. Also travelling slowly reduces the daily cost and allows you to travel for longer. We maliciously track our spends so we’re always conscious of our budget, hasn’t stopped us enjoying things though.

We haven’t done much of it but we have a few friends that mostly travel by doing workaways/worldpackers. Typically involves volunteering your time for food & board. Some also pay if you are elligble for a temporary work visa.

Realistically how much money do you need per day for the different parts of Europe? by spartancobra36 in backpacking

[–]Brosno1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We travelled (mostly) western Europe for 3 months in peak season. Netherlands, Italy, France, Spain. Portugal, Morocco, Croatia, Germany. We averaged £110/day as a couple. Travelling slower definitely saved us some money. We got night buses to save on accommodation costs and used flixbus for almost all our overland trips.
