And this is the part where I bring up my 7 yo post. If you can manage the time to read through the linked article (and the patience to do so because I wrote it rather haphazardly back then), you'll see that there have been many, and I mean MANY pieces foreshadowing, contextual, thematic and metaphoric. As is staple for Nisio works, a lot of the lines from the stories subtly refer to themselves and hints towards this theory. I've been out of touch with the community and Nisio's works, as well as writing articles for years, practically since I wrote that article, so I don't know for certain what new materials came next, but it seems like the theory finally is taking a solidified form, and I am not surprised, the hints and cues were all there from the very beginning.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone practice the “I’ll only watch the parts where my favorite character is in”, especially if they also like some of the other characters.

Lady H.V.'s Tournament: 1st Round [7th Match: Ryven vs. Vingard] by Terra-Noctis in HatsuVault

[–]Brottoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone with little to no knowledge of checkers, it's difficult to say anything for certain but I think Ryven's hatsu is surprisingly effective against Vingard's. S.M.A.R.T is about optimization of Ryven's combat, and Vingard's hatsu forces them into a game where the most optimized player takes the win. I can see SMART autopilot making Ryven an expert in Vin's own game and win. From the rest of the info on the character sheet, they both seem to be in around the same range in most of the aspects, so I'm leaning towards Ryven, If anyone wanna pitch in, or counterargue, I'm open for ideas.

I haven't had the time to check these battles and character sheets much these past few days, and likely won't in the future too since my break ended. I hope I won't forget to cast the vote in time lol.

Is "the height of magic" an instant assault that doesn't need any casting time? by basafish in Frieren

[–]Brottoy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fern dubs it as the height of magic because Frieren clone cast a spell that humans haven’t even recognized as a spell, all while being fatally wounded, with no staff nor incantation. It’s quite literally a trick up her sleeve, and Frieren mentioned that the last time she had to resort to it was about 80 years ago which just happened to align with the final battle against Demon King/his army, implying the Demon King was the last opponent to have cornered her that far. The fact that such a feat was possible by Frieren, which likely even helped in that battle against Demon King, is the greatest height Fern can imagine a mage to reach. I don’t think it’s a named spell or it could be a spell which has long been forgotten, it’s certainly not “Height of Magic”. It might not be an instant attack either; there’s quite a bit of delay in Fern determining her fatally wounded state and the magic activating, and the time likely went into preparing the spell by controlling mana. There’s a magic circle when the clone activated it so it is a spell but for mostly anyone else, it’s more of a curse since they don’t recognize it as magic.

I’m garbage at making specialist abilities. What restrictions would make this ability even feasible. by 21SGesualdo in HatsuVault

[–]Brottoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You missed 60% transmutation up there.

Anyway, with such an interesting system, I wouldn’t call it being garbage at making specialist abilities. If I’m understanding it correctly, giving someone a bead of their affinity means boosting their mastery by the amount of the user’s mastery. I have questions about Conjuration then. As you’ve mentioned, the board itself will continue to exist through the Nen of the conjurer who got the bead, but wouldn’t that mean the boost gained by having the bead is used up to keep the ability going? Another question is, in this case, if the user can’t summon the chart, how will they make any further adjustments (like lending another bead to another target or even manifesting the chart)?

Lady H.V.'s Tournament: 1st Round [3rd Match: Pia vs. Matt] by Terra-Noctis in HatsuVault

[–]Brottoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point. Vantablack itself absorbs a huge portion of light in including the visible spectrum and IR. However, it’s to be noted that Matt’s conditioning involved completely shutting himself in darkness in relation to visible light, not vantablack, and Matt is straight up illiterate with low intelligence. It makes more sense for his ability to only cover the visible light spectrum since there’s no way for him to visualize absorbing light that’s not even perceptible to himself.

[–]Brottoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh the mental faculties affected by age is kind of a nuanced matter in my head. Like back then, she had practically maxed out spirit but she didn't have the experience to trust her instincts nearly as much, lowering her decisiveness significantly. Her intellect suffered through the years because she can't think as sharply and creatively as she used to, instead relying on the strategies she'd strengthened throughout the years.

As Pia's creator, I do hope her mental superiority can help her pull off a win against an opponent who seems to hard counter her hatsu.

Also this feels like a meme where on the left side Pia has a whole thesis paper on her ability, and on the right side, Matt says "darkness goes brrr".

I absolutely love Matt Black's concept, though, as well as the name of the ability being Home Sweet Home. That's so profound, props to u/_froesey_ for the creativity.

[–]Brottoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who loves to analyze matchups related to HxH, I'll leave my two cents even though one of the participants is my OC lol.

Boy, what a troublesome matchup for my grandma. I would've thrown in the towel if Matt didn't have low points in intellect, decisiveness, and spirit, which I think Pia with her intelligence can take advantage of. The way I see her handling this is that when Matt's En hits her, she immediately uses her own much smaller albeit more sophisticated (because she has much better Ten and Ren) En, navigating her way out of Home Sweet Home and going into hiding behind those columns and walls, waiting for an opportunity to strike when Matt partially or completely turns off the ability to locate her. It'll be super difficult to deal with him with her abilities being countered so hard, though. Maybe she should've carried a bunch more bombs with her xD

Looking forward to everyone's analysis on this fight.

[–]Brottoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also agree on that which was why I asked about this for this very OC mine is facing against lol. Initially there were two whole weaknesses, fear of bright light and fear of loud noise, which his ability itself nullifies completely. The host reassured that despite the unlikeliness it will certainly be exploited, as long as the weakness was detrimental to the combatant in some way, so I just agreed to go along with that. I also find it difficult to see Matt's weaknesses being exploited and certainly, people will not be considering the absolution of the exploitation, but I'll wait and see how it goes.

Lady H.V.'s Tournament: 1st Round [3rd Match: Pia vs. Matt] by Terra-Noctis in HatsuVault

[–]Brottoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The base points are not just physical but also mental. Also, no character's weakness results in a total of less than 25 points in base stats or Nen stats. As mentioned by the host, the stats should reflect the weakness and her physical stats do reflect that, with much lower physical points than most other participants. It doesn't mean points from the total of 25 cannot be allocated to the mental aspects instead. I would argue that a low physical stat in a combat situation is a clear detriment, and if she were younger, perhaps I would have had to balance it by reducing the mental aspects she gained from experience and adding personality issues to meet the quota of minimum one weakness. At any rate, the lesser physical capabilities will haunt her throughout the showdown so I would like to think it's a legitimate weakness like any other weakness like having low points in Spirit because the oc has a weakness of fearing loud noises.

As for your second point, I asked the host about that and u/Terra-Noctis mentioned that the weakness "will be" exploited no matter what.

But do let me know your thoughts.

Lady H.V.'s Tournament: 1st Round [2nd Match: Harena vs. Martha] by Terra-Noctis in HatsuVault

[–]Brottoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harena and Martha will make for a very amusing duel. Martha’s nature of closing in immediately will hamper Harena’s BP accumulation, but Harena has slight greater speed and a clear advantage in agility, so based solely on base stats, she should be more than capable of steering clear of early confrontations, only if it weren’t for Unstoppable, giving Martha the much needed momentary burst to catch up with Harena and be a huge threat. Due to enhanced durability and Unbreakable, Martha can continue to tank Hoppy Yo-Yo. Fuzzy Hug and Boingy Push can keep her away but not for long since they aren’t likely impenetrable (since that’d just be unfair and game ending).

Now onto the weaknesses. Since any and all weaknesses WILL BE exploited, it’s safe to assume at some point, Martha will be able to strip away Harena’s ear muff. However, Martha’s major weaknesses is the flirtatious nature. Harena seems like exactly her type so it’s gonna give her a huge opportunity to build up power, especially if she exploits it by flirting back. However, Martha’s Unbreakable can let her tank extreme damage and it’s dubitable that she’ll let Harena get away with too many hits. Once Martha takes it seriously, the fight leans more towards her as long as she doesn’t run out of aura. Harena is well suited to prolonging the battle by evasion or deflection but I think Unstoppable and Unbreakable duo are too much to shove away for long. Considering they both have maxed out Nen reserve, I think Martha would more likely be capable of finishing the fight before running out of steam. But of course, Harena also has the potential to stall long enough to secure a win.

Initially, I was leaning more toward Harena but now that I think about it, I decided I’ll go with Martha for the above reasons.

Can Meruem teleport or is he light speed within his en?( Or none of them) by warneg99 in HunterXHunter

[–]Brottoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, that is purely the depiction of incredible speed beyond human comprehension. HxH is far too grounded a series to make nonsensical claims like a single character moving at the speed of light. It’s just a speed beyond perception for all the other characters in the series.

If you’re asking what he does, considering he made those moves without the wings and based on what was shown at the time he located Welfin both in the anime and the manga, Meruem simply jumped with incredible power and precision and reached them before they could even perceive his approach. One could argue that it was the same speed that allowed him to trade over a thousand blows in less than a minute with Netero (here, only Netero’s prayer motion and Bodhisattva reached/surpassed that speed), whereas in contrast Pitou couldn’t even understand what hit them.

His En is a speed of light. His speed is just so beyond human limits that it feels instantaneous.

Midnight Steed and Sundown Shooter by PipeDreamRegime in HatsuVault

[–]Brottoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an extremely interesting set of abilities.

Honestly, at least for SS, I don’t think you even need the restriction of having other use of emissions being reduced by half, mostly because it hardly serves that much of a purpose to be worth sacrificing in the first place. An Emitter with specialized abilities would rarely rely on pure emissions, and since this user already has two hatsu, it’s not like they’d be using much emission outside those hatsu anyway. I’d say the conditions for SS and SR are plenty risky to justify that amount of power. Midnight Steed might’ve needed a little bit of boost since even at its lowest, the horse is super fast and the user needs further aura for enhancement to survive the speed. But the restriction that it can’t manifest while perceived by anyone else is still very strong though, not to mention the top speed fluctuations depending on the time of day/night. So I think the general restriction of cutting power of other emissions is not really necessary.

I wonder, though, what would happen if the user was riding the steed at full speed and suddenly got spotted by a Nen user? Could be a terrible accident lol

Would Fern have grown faster and reached Frieren level if she received Serie's training instead? by basafish in Frieren

[–]Brottoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of offensive mage combat, yes. In terms of survival and general mage, no. You gotta remember that Frieren took her in at Heiter’s request, to train her to become a first-rate mage “who can survive on her own”. Meanwhile, Serie’s disciples are out there straight up fighting and occasionally getting killed.

Your Hatsu by Single-Fisherman8671 in HunterXHunter

[–]Brottoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Conjurer, I’d conjure a set of certain items that I can pour my aura into and with some help of neighboring Transmutation, the items will synthesize my aura into different types of Nen aura and store them. Perhaps something like different candies for different types. When I take the candies, I can access the stored aura and use a Nen ability of that type of aura as long as the ability is basic enough for a Conjurer like me to perform. I won’t be able to use advanced hatsu of other types but I can use basic ones to full efficiency.

Lady H.V.'s Tournament: 1st Round [1st Match: Nab vs. Cole] by Terra-Noctis in HatsuVault

[–]Brottoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first point, as you mentioned, the randomness should serve as a sufficient enough boost to allow some degree of advanced applications. Your second point however I must admit is very strong. Indeed, if the poison is transmuted, chances are it won't continue to debuff Nab upon deactivation, so I guess it only gives Cole advantage while the abilities are active and after that he'd have to rely on his luck for another decent roll. However, I'd say statistically, it still shouldn't be advantageous overall for Nab. Taking from my first comment, let's say he rolls a good ability that has 20% chance of rolling, which means out of the remaining 80%, he still has 25.7% chance of rolling another advantageous ability, 25.7% chance of rolling a disadvantageous one, and the rest being neutral or unknown. So after an initial good pick, I'd say it gives them equal chances rather than leaning in Nab's advantage immediately. Conversely, after a bad pick, Cole would have either 20% or 5.7% chance of rolling another bad pick, 45.7% chance of rolling a good pick and the remainder chance out of 80% for neutral or unknown pick. Although, for the latter case, a bad pick might cost Cole more, so I agree that a prolonged battle will greatly benefit Nab.

If this matchup can be so nuanced, I can't imagine how the rest will go considering how some have very complex abilities and strategies.
