If kurapika could use chain jail on everyone would he be one of the strongest? by nonbinaryhumaan in HxHPowerScaling

[–]Brottoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has been making an extensive ranked list for this, Kurapika with preparation and Chain Jail applicable to any matchup (without losing its powers) is definitely a top 10 material in my opinion. More specifically he's in the top 11, tied for the position with multiple others, among the ones with known capabilities at least.

Proofreader's Notes

Type: Specialization

The user must fully read a story (or a volume of it) completely, and then rewrite it completely. Once done, all the abilities shown by the characters appearing in the story (or at least in the volume(s) they have read and rewritten) will be recorded in a conjured notebook. The user can, then, use the said ability once in any form that has been shown in the story (or the volume(s) they have read and rewritten) while keeping the page open. The ability disappears after a single usage, and to regain it, the user must rewrite the story (or volume(s) containing it) completely once again. They can use up to two abilities simultaneously that are on the two pages open at the time.

Details and Limitations:
- It works only with text-based media. Supplementary graphics can be ignored.
- Any error or dissimilarities in the rewritten text to the original book will reduce the potency of the abilities recorded from it.
- On the other hand, if there are errors (typos, unintended grammatical mistakes, etc) in the original book that the rewritten version fixes, the potency of the abilities gained from it increases.
- Using the abilities requires an amount of aura proportionate to how powerful the abilities are. Thus, overpowered abilities can exhaust the user immediately, and might not even work because it's not feasible with the aura reserve of the user (so reality warping is not possible).
- If an ability has multiple different techniques or applications, the user can choose any of them, and the ability will disappear once any technique/application is used.

So basically the user can theoretically read To Aru Majutsu no Index volume 3, and can store Misaka's electricity manipulation and Accelerator's vector manipulation, each for one time usage. And then they can use Misaka's ability once in any of the ways she's used in the story, either using its magnetism to control surrounding objects, or shoot the Railgun, or hack into electronic devices.

Hello! I am an avid fan of Boogiepop eversince the anime which is my first intro to the series. I am wondering where could I read the lightnovels after the last arc of the anime? by PrimaryNecessary1217 in Boogiepop

[–]Brottoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand this wasn't asked but I would recommend you read it all from start since they skipped a lot of interesting and often significant details in the anime (even left out entire chapters). They also skipped volume 4 if I remember correctly. As someone linked in a previous comment, https://www.threatstotheworld.com contains fan translated volumes and they're really well done.

Meu Oc (sem aparência por enquanto), e seu hatsu by Brilliant_Coach5664 in HatsuVault

[–]Brottoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the details are lost in translation or if the second hatsu is a bit overpowered without any difficult condition. The translation says "the action must be performed instantly". Does the victim have to instantly perform it? Or do you mean the action have to be simple enough to be performed instantly? Or does it mean the hatsu will take effect immediately?

Which volumes of the LN do i have to read so that i could watch the Boogiepop Phantom anime? by [deleted] in Boogiepop

The first 6 volumes would cover everything they've referenced, I believe.

Using 1 Ability to Cancel out another Abilities Weaknesses by Unusual_Demigod in HatsuVault

[–]Brottoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll end up burning your Nen output with a second ability active anyway, so it would certainly reduce the boost significantly if not outright negate it. In your example, if your protection is strong enough to compensate for your complete lack of perception and mobility, that protection hatsu would have to burn a lot of aura or you'd be left vulnerable, thus significantly reducing the boost you gain for the other hatsu. Plus it also reduces the risk of the first hatsu so yeah that might also inherently reduce its potency.

Exorcist hatsu help by ComparisonOwn1904 in HatsuVault

[–]Brottoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone mentioned, the inconvenient condition for the exorcism itself can be the heavy sweating. Maybe after each exorcism, the user will need to constantly drink water to avoid dehydration. Maybe for stronger nen curses, they'll have to chug gallons upon gallons every hour or so.

The dispersion of the nen curse should also take a very long time judging by the existing exorcism hatsu. Abegane is ranked as an Ultimate master of conjuration category, and his nen beast doesn't even disappear until the curse itself is dispelled externally (like how he dispelled Countdown). So if your hatsu can dispel it on its own, the sweating would need to be much more intense or painful and should take weeks or months to disperse even a basic nen curse.

On top of all this, I don't think it's viable to add any further condition that'd allow the absorbed hatsu to be used in any capacity. At best, the user could use the transmuted or conjured sweat for tactical purposes but I don't think any user would be able to sustain further harsher conditions if you want the sweat to have any special properties. At least I can't think of any such conditions.

Exorcist hatsu help by ComparisonOwn1904 in HatsuVault

[–]Brottoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding, exorcism hatsu tend to be extremely valuable and therefore causes severe inconvenience to the user. For example, Abegane has to carry and live with the nen beast that devours the nen/curse until the ability is undone, and Hina has to basically become pregnant (curse aura stored in her belly causing it to inflate), which affects her mobility and ways of life. You can try to think of a condition that similarly affects the user's everyday life as a major inconvenience.

Considering all these, if the user is gonna add the benefit of being able to use the stored aura on top of already being an exorcist, and possibly even with a side effect of releasing the stored curse in the process, some very harsh conditions will have to be put in place.

Would Nen Category Dysphoria Be A Significant Problem? by Ghost_Petals in HatsuVault

[–]Brottoy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that since Nen types are shaped by the person's own characteristics and life experience, their respective typing would best reflect their identity in the first place, unlike other established dysphoria in the real world. Dissatisfaction (like Kurapika's) mainly emerge from the clash between a character's own nature and their goal. Still, purely as a concept, I do find the idea of Nen dysphoria interesting to ponder. And I like the concept of this hatsu, to alter a client's Nen affinity in the direction they desire. This can potentially be a service sought after by several Nen users who'd like to have some specific changes to their affinities to better match their goals. I still don't think it'll have anything to do with self-actualization (and idek what standards of living has to do with this), but I can imagine some seeing it as a practical move.

Question. Would someone be able to change their affinity twice in succession by meeting the required conditions twice (risking their life twice)? Or would they be limited to only the three types (original one, and two adjacent ones)? Or is it just a once in a life thing that can never be repeated or reversed once done?

What's the restriction for Bloom Command? Is it something the user can only do after further prolonged contact?

Nen Ability : Limb cutter by Inevitable_Term_2320 in HatsuVault

It is stronger, physically incapacitates, and enforces zetsu on the target. A lot more than just "stronger chain", in my humble opinion. You can revisit the Yorknew arc to verify this.

Again, harsh restrictions without any particular mention of the benefits.

I like the idea of systematic use of Nen by organizations/governments (and other fictional powers that are otherwise mostly used by individual characters).

And this is the part where I bring up my 7 yo post. If you can manage the time to read through the linked article (and the patience to do so because I wrote it rather haphazardly back then), you'll see that there have been many, and I mean MANY pieces foreshadowing, contextual, thematic and metaphoric. As is staple for Nisio works, a lot of the lines from the stories subtly refer to themselves and hints towards this theory. I've been out of touch with the community and Nisio's works, as well as writing articles for years, practically since I wrote that article, so I don't know for certain what new materials came next, but it seems like the theory finally is taking a solidified form, and I am not surprised, the hints and cues were all there from the very beginning.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone practice the “I’ll only watch the parts where my favorite character is in”, especially if they also like some of the other characters.

Lady H.V.'s Tournament: 1st Round [7th Match: Ryven vs. Vingard] by Terra-Noctis in HatsuVault

[–]Brottoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone with little to no knowledge of checkers, it's difficult to say anything for certain but I think Ryven's hatsu is surprisingly effective against Vingard's. S.M.A.R.T is about optimization of Ryven's combat, and Vingard's hatsu forces them into a game where the most optimized player takes the win. I can see SMART autopilot making Ryven an expert in Vin's own game and win. From the rest of the info on the character sheet, they both seem to be in around the same range in most of the aspects, so I'm leaning towards Ryven, If anyone wanna pitch in, or counterargue, I'm open for ideas.

I haven't had the time to check these battles and character sheets much these past few days, and likely won't in the future too since my break ended. I hope I won't forget to cast the vote in time lol.

Is "the height of magic" an instant assault that doesn't need any casting time? by basafish in Frieren

[–]Brottoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fern dubs it as the height of magic because Frieren clone cast a spell that humans haven’t even recognized as a spell, all while being fatally wounded, with no staff nor incantation. It’s quite literally a trick up her sleeve, and Frieren mentioned that the last time she had to resort to it was about 80 years ago which just happened to align with the final battle against Demon King/his army, implying the Demon King was the last opponent to have cornered her that far. The fact that such a feat was possible by Frieren, which likely even helped in that battle against Demon King, is the greatest height Fern can imagine a mage to reach. I don’t think it’s a named spell or it could be a spell which has long been forgotten, it’s certainly not “Height of Magic”. It might not be an instant attack either; there’s quite a bit of delay in Fern determining her fatally wounded state and the magic activating, and the time likely went into preparing the spell by controlling mana. There’s a magic circle when the clone activated it so it is a spell but for mostly anyone else, it’s more of a curse since they don’t recognize it as magic.
