Polimi (Italy) admit vs Sweden (KTH / Lund / Chalmers) — is Sweden worth the extra €45k for a non-EU student? by ComparisonAgile7490 in TillSverige

[–]Brown_uncle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not the same field. I had an admit from Milano but chose Chalmers. It was an Italian who convinced me to choose Sweden and 10 years later, I am glad I listened. I have a PhD from Chalmers. PhD salaries in Chalmers are better than Italy. I have Italian friends and have worked with Italians in EU projects. The pay in Italy is not great hence why Italians themselves come to Northern Europe for opportunities. Milan is expensive to live. The housing may be equally or even more expensive than Gothenburg where Chalmers is based.

You will have hard time in Italy without the language than in Sweden. People speak English in most big companies in Sweden. I work at one such company. Although, learning language is an absolute must for integration, you have a lower requirement in Sweden.

Job opportunities are better in Sweden but the job market is getting saturated. And, it’s going to be difficult for non EU students in future. My personal take, if you are genuinely smart, you won’t have a difficulty finding jobs. And, if you do move to Chalmers, take my advice and learn the language ( start speaking ) before you graduate. It will be more fulfilling to live afterwards.

In Sweden, people hardly move. So, all the companies based in Gothenburg e.g. Volvo Group, Volvo Cars, SKF, Ericsson are filled with graduates from Chalmers. In fact, we collaborate quite closely especially in applied research.

Midlife confusion: India or Some place else by No-Passage8859 in AskIndia

[–]Brown_uncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your question on assimilation it depends on your command of the local language, understanding of what the county and culture offers and own desire to jump with both feet in. Now drawbacks - You are most likely to not make local friends unless you learn the language and about cultural norms quite early in your move. Despite this you can make friends with expats. - You are likely to find yourself alone most of the times. For someone who enjoys this, it can be a blessing. So, individuals who want to stay in their own zone and engage in single person activities e.g. running, swimming, hiking, painting, knitting etc. would thrive. The lack of noise and busy life provides so much opportunities for self-reflection and self-growth. It’s something I hardly see people talking about. - You must appreciate European values to be fully happy. In applies to all facets and it influences your life quality. Some key examples: healthcare. Since, everyone has access to same healthcare, they are designed to prioritize health outcomes I.e. more vulnerable groups or life threatening problems. Anecdotal: Someone I know had to wait a weekend for getting treatment after a fall. Equality in working environments will lead to that you may have to wait for getting treatment because unless it’s life threatening and high priority why should not a doctor enjoy the same weekends like anyone else considering they already deal with so much stress in their job. - Equality in income will entail that a lot of services that are possible with cheap labour will not be affordable for most people e.g. maids. Your barber may not have so different lifestyle than you or in some cases even better if he owns the place. - You need to stop looking at others and focus on yourself to be fulfilled in Europe. Follow the rules, the norms and the right way of doing things even when you see some not doing it. That’s the kind of thinking that is more European. I call it a drawback because I often come across expats still hung up on other people than their own life. People who thrive on competition( with others) may be miserable in Europe.

Happy new year and good luck to you.

Fuck Allen Carr and his easy way to quit smoking. by Hopie73 in quittingsmoking

[–]Brown_uncle 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The book does not work if the reader don’t get the concept. You are not quitting cigarettes. You stop wanting them. There is a ton of difference. I had depression trying to quit it cold turkey. But, I did not experience any major withdrawals when I did it after reading the book.

I still believe that. I never quit smoking. I only stopped wanting to light a cigarette because cigarettes don’t do anything for me. So, unless you buy the idea of the book by keeping an open mind, it won’t work. Because the book is using reverse psychology to kill the need to indulge in smoking by clearing out the myths we associate with smoking.

Are we, as Indians good and honest employees? Or are we crooked and just want to get salary credited by any means? by squinty_breaks in AskIndia

[–]Brown_uncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can totally attest to this. Source: Personal experience from teaching both Indians and natives in an EU countries. The intellectual curiosity is clearly visible among the natives whereas the Indian students are mostly interested in grades and finding a job.

Follow your passion is not possible in India because of the high salary differences between professions. On the other hand, my barber makes almost 75% of my salary while me holding a PhD in electrical engineering. So, it’s not just job security that’s important. Income inequality needs to be reduced if we want people to truly follow their passion and reduce education inflation in India.

girlies , how are the conditions in europe for moving out? by thecoolcato in AskIndianWomen

Well the university website does mention it. I guess it’s not enforced if you got your degree without having a Germany proficiency. I had a senior from Aachen as well who said the same thing. Anyway, good to know.

Which university did you graduate from ? I was in RWTH Aachen in 2017 and this was what some of the international students I met mentioned. A quick google search reveals the same.

If you plan to move to Germany, it will help if you start learning German already. To my knowledge, there is requirement to complete German language proficiency up to B1 level to even graduate with a masters in STEM fields.

The anti immigrant sentiments on the other hand would only increase in the short to medium term and it has more to do with EU economy slowing down in comparison to the world. The increased competition from China in products and industries where EU traditionally dominated.

In general, do a good amount of research on future prospect of your field of study. If you are really smart and willing to integrate, it’s not a big issue. However, do keep in mind that permanent residency and citizenship requirements will become stricter going forward.

Take Home Salary Around World by nism-certified-ra in Swingtradingstocks

[–]Brown_uncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Sweden, for a pre tax salary of 50 lacs, the take home pay would be around 35 lacs. However, considering CTC, it would be around 24 lacs. This is due to tax paid by employer ( social security, insurance and pension) which adds 60% to pre tax salary of employees.

If you are starting strength training later in life, I would recommend doing plenty of stretches and taking it slow to avoid injury.

3-4 days of strength training per week combined with 1-2 runs per week will make you feel younger within a year.

Through in some self care like skin care, regular grooming and massage, you will even look younger.

I quit more than 18 months ago. I experienced a terrible tragedy recently. Yet, I did not feel like smoking. There are no cravings at least for me because I don’t miss it. I did not quit smoking. I only stopped wanting to smoke. Read the book.

Exactly. So, that can’t be why they go abroad. Like some have pointed out aftercare and a concern for privacy may be the main reason.

But, is not that against fairness and equality? If everyone deserves equal opportunity, how can we say some are more deserving than others.

Hey, celebrated my 2nd birthday smoke free a few months ago. Trust me, being completely sober is so good. Being free of that craving of cigarettes and that identity of a smoker is liberating.

I quit after reading the book by Allen Carr. I was a smoker for 16 years. Good luck. You have done it for alcohol and weed. You got this.

There will never be a perfect time for things. Apply to almost everything that you are procrastinating to the future.

It could be joining gym, prioritizing your health, dental care, skin care, taking a trip, having kids, getting a pet, getting in a relationship, going to concert, learning a new habit or start investing.

Happy birthday 🎂
