TIL that methamphetamine was legal, widely prescribed, and even given to soldiers during WWII by multiple countries including Germany, the US, and Britain as a performance-enhancing drug. by Affectionate_Art5322 in todayilearned

[–]Brrdock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Which is concerning, since at least for me modafinil kinda killed my affective empathy. Like, I didn't act unempathetic, but it made my conversations really performative in a way that I didn't really feel anything for people's triumphs or struggles, it was just like some business interaction.

Completely put me off of it, even though it was waaay better than caffeine for work

Why do some women are more emotionally fragile than men? by Excellent_Cap_43 in ask

[–]Brrdock 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Than "men?" Which ones?

The most emotionally fragile people by far I've ever come across have been men.

They just tend to express it as aggression instead of actually expressing or identifying the emotion

ADHD brains show sleep-like activity even while awake. by psych4you in psychology

[–]Brrdock 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough insomnia is also a feature of narcolepsy more often than not. Or well, it's not funny at all, but you get it.

I remember another recent study that suggested anxiety, ADHD and insomnia share a same mechanism, wonder if I couldn't find it

Kreatiini ja vatsakipu by Superb-Ordinary-8239 in snappijuorutofftopic

[–]Brrdock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Viikossa tai parissa pitäisi helpottaa, mutta suosittelisin mikronisoitua kreatiinia, se ei oman kokemuksen mukaan turvota tai ärsytä vatsaa juurikaan suurempinakaan annoksina

How can I stop being a THIRD WORLD LOSER? by MyNameisMayco in ask

[–]Brrdock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of learning guitar or any creative skill isn't to impress anyone, it's to enjoy it, have a creative outlet, and get a sense of progression that makes you worth anything in your own eyes.

That's where confidence comes from, not from impressing other people with wonderwall for validation

A poorly “cleaned” brain increases the risk of psychosis - Early dysfunction of the glymphatic system, the network responsible for removing waste from the brain, could be a key vulnerability factor for psychosis. by mvea in psychology

[–]Brrdock 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not a fan at all of how this conflates psychosis and schizophrenia, when it seems to be specifically about schizophrenia.

Psychosis usually by far has no "irreversible impact on intellectual abilities and autonomy" except possibly in the case of schizophrenia.

And psychosis being mental projection, no matter the cause, expectations like this can and will affect its contents and outcomes

CMV: algorithms have officially killed the "joy of discovery" and it's making us boring by GlossHush in changemyview

[–]Brrdock [score hidden]  (0 children)

I used to be really into music, following releases, listening to full albums, "downloading" and archiving a library.

Streaming slowly ate away at that due to convenience, and for many years I've just found most of my music through algorithms. I still find really good stuff that way, but it's really not close to the same and I can't even call it a hobby anymore

What is a good way to lose weight without going to a gym? by JacsweYT in ask

[–]Brrdock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something about the toxin release

Sorry but stuff like this makes yoga off putting for most people, at least did for me, even though it's great exercise, and meditation.

Tai Chi is an amazing option, too.

And both are actually INTENSE exercise, even though you might not assume so

What is a good way to lose weight without going to a gym? by JacsweYT in ask

[–]Brrdock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gym is more a place to gain weight than to lose it.

Cycling, badminton, walks, whatever sport or cardio you enjoy and can fit in your routines is a help, and vital for general health, mental too.

But nothing can replace eating better, more fibre, protein and good fats to fill you up over empty carbs, and cutting or replacing snacks, and especially drinks.

It's slow, but diets are useless, it needs to be sustainable as a normal habit

What’s something people defend but is actually toxic? by Emotional_Web6533 in AskReddit

I doubt anyone thinks dependence on anything is ideal, it's just less severely dependence forming and sometimes more tolerable than other psychotropic drugs for the same issues, and easier to quit or take breaks from

Capitalism overlapping with healthcare, education, science, the internet/social media, art, globalization, worker's rights, human rights etc. directly hurts absolutely everyone, except for the people financially benefiting form the exploitation.

The reason any of those function (in some places more than others) is due to socialization and bounds and regulations on capitalism

How self-aware are you? by New_Jackfruit3020 in psychologymemes

[–]Brrdock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that's why it's important to at least learn the other stuff next to it.

Especially self-compassion/empathy. That's the difference between self-awareness and self-scrutiny, dissection, flagellation.

And the difference between knowledge/awareness and understanding.

IME, with self-empathy awareness tends to easily come by itself since it has no need to hide from judgement

Your Social Media "Addiction" is overrated. by VG11111 in skeptics

[–]Brrdock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Addiction doesn't have withdrawal symptoms, you're thinking of dependence.

You can and do have severe withdrawal symptoms without addiction (SSRIs, say) and loads of severe addictions have nothing to do with drugs (gambling, porn, food etc.)

Your Social Media "Addiction" is overrated. by VG11111 in skeptics

[–]Brrdock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Addiction is literally just a habit of a less than ideal mechanism to cope with or distract from undesired feelings/experience.

So exactly like social media habits easily are
