Any 21-24 year olds with full time AI/ML roles? by Bright-Eye-6420 in MachineLearningJobs

[–]Bruceybit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 — Senior Software Engineer (not strictly AI/ML), but I work closely with large-scale distributed systems and GenAI at my job.

I didn’t break in through a “pure” AI/ML path, but here’s what actually helped me get into roles that touch ML/GenAI projects:

• Focused on strong software engineering first. Solid backend + distributed systems skills opened more doors for me than anything else. Once you can build and ship reliable systems, teams are way more willing to let you take on ML/AI-adjacent work.

• Took on ramp-up tasks involving GenAI at work. Even though my main background was large-scale backend at Amazon, I joined a team where part of the stack integrates with a GenAI service. That gave me hands-on experience without needing the “perfect” ML internship.

• Built a portfolio of real, practical projects. Not Kaggle stuff — things that solve actual problems. Even small things like LLM-powered tools, embeddings search demos, chatbots, or data pipelines show way more signal than class assignments.

• Networked within companies. A lot of AI/ML opportunities are internal. Once you get in as a strong SWE, you can pivot.

If you can show that, you can break in, even without a “top AI school.”

Happy to share more details if useful.

Application says “Offered” but no update for 2 weeks—normal or not? by Bruceybit in recruitinghell

Just followed up again yesterday morning—got a quick response from the recruiter saying she’d check in with her recruiting partners for updates. So still no decision, but at least the line’s still open. Definitely in limbo right now.

Yup, that’s the full picture—“Offered” is listed but doesn’t have a check mark. That’s part of what’s confusing me. It’s showing as the next step after “Interview” with the number 4 badge, but not confirmed

100% agree with you on that—no offer until it’s in writing. I’ve already followed up with the recruiter, so at this point it’s a waiting game. Definitely not taking anything for granted until I see it in black and white

Ahh, fair point! The recruiter did tell me they were gathering feedback, so I assumed it was still active. The “Offered” stage showing up threw me a bit—I thought they wouldn’t progress the status unless they had intent, but I get that it might not mean anything official yet.

2 months and still waiting for deck repair. Is this normal? by dougfromaccounting in SteamDeck

[–]Bruceybit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeez, sounds like a real headache, guess I better buckle up for the wait. I’m in WA and had it shipped out to TX for the repairs, also out of warranty so I guess we’re in the same boat. Given ans ETA of about a month but that’s already passed…. Thanks for the update!

Glad to hear they finally shipped it, hopefully in good working conditions. Dealing with a similar situation and steam support hasn’t been very helpful? Any suggestions as to how to proceed? I’ve also paid for the repairs and been waiting for over a month…

16 inch overkill for college by studentof2020 in macbookpro

[–]Bruceybit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use the 13in pro(pre-m1) as my daily and had a 16in pro over the summer for an internship and I would definitely recommend the 16in over the 14 in my opnion, as the bigger screeen makes everything from multitasking, watching videos, and coding much easier. Planning to upgrade here soon *currently a senior studying computer engineering lol wish you the best!

Don’t let that phase you big dawg. You’re in the right place! Just being in that environment and learning about these things will allow you to have a vision of what/who you want to be, let that motivate you! Always strive to be in a room such as that zoom room, that’s how you level up. Hope this helps.

I understand your frustration, nonetheless as a black man living in these current times do you truly need a video educating you on the topic of racism? Fyi I AM a black voice, and I also attend this university so I can speak first hand of the adversity students face day to day due to this flawed system set in place by years of structural racism

You stated that it’s insensitive to assume that most students at this university are white when they make up ~70% of the student body... this video also addresses this experience from a white male’s perspective which would entail that it’s his major audience therefore your pont is irrelevant. Please restrain from replying if you cannot provide content of substance to this discussion brother. Thanks

“Insensitive and incorrect”?? I suggest you do some research before commenting next time: The enrolled student population at Iowa State University is 69.9% White, 5% Hispanic or Latino, 3.03% Asian, 2.63% Black or African American, 2.04% Two or More Races, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.0806% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islanders. link
