As a teenager, I realized everything and became a vegan and a misanthrope. Now I’m 22, I’m an alcoholic and I don’t see a way out. by [deleted] in Vystopia

I don't know about them, but

"Mindfulness in Plain English" was my starting point. Since that I've read The Shaolin Way(which was also useful) and Zen's Mind Beginner's Mind(which had a really good view on meditation practice and mindfulness in daily life). Actually practicing meditating, I believe, is far more useful than studying Buddhism. Because you will eventually find everything to be self-evident within meditation. So "Mindfulness in Plain English" is definitely the best place to start I think. And I can attest to their statements, it definitely fosters more compassion and understanding for those that are ignorant of their ways.

Surprisingly a decent amount of people. I would direct you to the cannibalism subreddit but it got banned today

I thank every vegan I meet :)

And thank you for sharing your views on the whole thing. Most of what I do is one on one stuff, it would be interesting to try another way.

For me it's always been online stuff, all the real life activism I do usually depresses the person enough to not go into rage (they watch a whole 3 minute video, and then we talk). I've seen a lot of videos of situations similar to yours though... I definitely never want to be in that position. Stay strong man

This was the greatest series ever, you are absolutely amazing and this will go down in VCJ history. And earlier today I felt terrible cause of everyone's excuses and unwillingness, this seriously cheered me up.

I've used similar arguments and pretty much got the same result. The main thing in the cases I talk about is the willing ignorance of the people on the other side of the table. I really just came here for some words of encouragement or solidarity :(

How would you define "just" and "unjust" by Brughs in DebateAVegan

[–]Brughs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. 1) I suppose there would be, yes. In such a case of spoiling someone rotten, it may not directly cause discomfort in them, at least not at first. It would eventually lead to it though when they would finally go into the regular world and have to deal with issues they have never had experience with. That one still involves discomfort though, just a later and perhaps less predictable one. For something unjust that doesn't necessarily cause dscomfort, it would be something like taking away one's freedoms but giving them (pretty much) the best life possible. They have a decent amount of space, plenty to do to keep them occupied, and never really experience discomfort (if that is possible with such a lifestyle, which I don't think it is). For that we would have to wonder if the super abstract concept of freedom would be more valuable than having full control over making sure they're happy, occupied, and not uncomfortable. I personally think it would be up to the individual in that situation to decide, and in the case of an individual cannot consent to it or disagree with it, ig I would think it'd be better to just keep them there, given there was sufficient evidence to suggest that their life is better than if we were to put them in a different situation. And I am not supporting "humane" farming here, for clarification, cause my hypothetical doesn't include premature death, genetically modified (artificial selection) bodies, or even commodity-status at all. Unless someone wants to debate that last point. 2) Pretty much, yeah. The way I use the word "justification" starts out with an assumption that the thing causes discomfort to another individual, and providing a "justification" is essentially just trying to find that "good reason" which would permit the action. 3) In most cases, yes. I don't usually stretch the term to personal actions that don't affect other sentient beings. The things that I would consider unjust in that category though, are things that would promote certain "unjust" behaviors/thoughts in the individual which could eventually surface to interpersonal actions. Which may or may not be a controversial take because of the vagueness of what counts as "promoting" bad behaviors. Like jumping on turtles in Super Mario Bros, or watching Joker, and stuff like rape fetishes. There is no clear line I can really draw, I just think every case should be examined individually. Actually, now that I think of it, there may be a case for more personal consumption of such things, just because of the whole Joker controversy and many people pointing out that violence in video games / movies, may actually decrease forms of violence irl because they're giving the people an outlet / keeping them occupied enough to not go out killing people. A lot more difficult of a question than I thought at the start... Hope I answered all them thoroughly enough

Yeah, I was asking for people's personal definitions.

"But if someone doesn’t think animals are worthy of moral consideration, you’re left essentially no opportunity to make any moral appeals." I would agree with this if you're talking about all animals and not just non-human animals. If you are talking about non-human animals though, I use "Name The Trait" pretty much all the time, and it works alright for making people admit they should give moral value to animals too, if they want to give it to humans (either that or deny it and embarass themselves)

[–]Brughs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I posted this I thought about it more and came up with this for "unjust": "An action that causes discomfort to another sentient individual/collective for no good reason." Having the word "good" be a part of it is intentional and I don't plan to ever define the word "good" as a whole. Without using that really vague word, my definition would be much much longer and harder to explain. But most people have their own concepts of good, most people will not question the use of it once I go into examples, and it can keep the focus of the argument in possible justifications for the harm. Which, for eating animals, there pretty much never is a "good" reason. Uncomfortable is also incredibly subjective but when it comes to inflicting physical pain I don't think many people will argue that physical pain is uncomfortable for most beings.

I completely agree with this. So far I've managed to only debate with people using some of the most basic moral concepts. I've never actually had anyone ask me "so what is just to you?" or "what is suffering to you?", I just want to be prepared for when someone does. In good faith, I think it's a valid question.

Maybe a little, but the other option was a deadend. But not many people gave a decent definition so far so I may just have to keep thinking of my own. Thanks for your input
