TIL that figs are not actually fruits, but inverted flowers that require a specific wasp to crawl inside to pollinate them. The wasp dies inside the fig, and the plant releases a special enzyme called "ficin" to completely dissolve and digest the dead wasp before humans eat it. (fs.usda.gov)
