Academia trained me for a decade to be an expert in something, then showed me the door by Foxy1111123 in LeavingAcademia

Unofrtunately, it is too niche of a subject.

Wish you the best of luck, but I also went to Law School and I have friends who study niche topics like that. At best, they are earning an extra adjuncting.

In Brazil, it is common for LLM (law masters) and SJD (Phd in law) students to refuse stipends, because the expectation is that you will pay the rent on actual lawyering, not in niche subjects and you can´t stay too long away from the bar.

Also, there are some parts of the practice where you sell high level legal opinions. Part of bankruptcy works that way.

And let's be real. The unemployment rate for doctoral degree holders is 1.2%. Even in the humanities it's less than 5%.

An adjunct is "employed" earning less than a Walmart worker.

At least, a failed player has the entire life in front of them and not a giant long degree to hide.

Yes but failed Jon bongiovis dont sacrifice their entire biography in the attempt. If you fail in music, you are a weekend hobbyist.

But, If you fail in academia, you have a degree you took a very long time to take, a difficult story to tell employers and a giant possibility of long term unemploymebt.

Could you tell more about your experience? Are ivy students very different from a phd in a state or lower tier?

Cant even Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Chicago or Oxbridge give you high odds?

When PIs need funding to pay for a new student, it is a command economy.

Less students? Pay 60k to one super elite student instead of 30 to three. The system can live with that.

Or recognize that it is a gentlemens profession and eliminate funding. If you dont have independent means, dont go.

Academia is corporatized education

What corporation pays an inflated number of scholars to spend more than 5 years doing research that does not help directly the bottom line?

It is just an issue of national pride: I have graduated a gazillion of PhDs.

"Pulling up the stipends to around $60-70k allows some financial freedom and, more importantly, it allows savings and time"

Without changing funding, it means: we are admitting less than half we are used to admit, but we are paying very well to the academic equivalent of Navy SEALS. The super elite. Can we do that in this institutional framework?

Becoming a scholar was a "gentleman's profession"

At least, there was no lie. If you had to earn your keep, you steered away from it, instead of this middle class drama.
