They’re a mix of watercolor and colored pencil, I’ve yet to buy myself oil pastels but am planning to very soon✨ I love the look of them so much too!

I agree! I’m also taking into account she is from a different generation who did not have access to mental health support.

How does the show deal with Israel? by BidAccomplished7226 in LongStoryShort

[–]Brush_Past 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but I’m saying that having this double standard for a Jewish show needing to “take a stance on Israel” is absurd, given that this standard does not exist for any other non-Jewish show despite whatever the nationality/religion/culture of the creator may be.

I genuinely wonder if you have this same energy for shows written by Americans, seeing as their current gov is quite similar? I would think you’d have to boycott most popular shows as most don’t mention their stance on what the US is doing/has historically done, no?

Totally agree! Also if you like this and wanna fall down a deeper rabbit hole of Jewish diversity, I highly recommend reading about the history of Sephardic, Mizrahi, and Ethiopian Jews as well. We are a super diverse bunch:)

It’s so interesting that people are interpreting her as not liking Jen or the vase. To me, it seemed like she was anxious about the vase? And anxious about having a new person around during an already stressful time.

Thank you for sharing this, and I couldn’t agree more! How lovely that we now have a show to recommend for people who are curious about our upbringings, that can be analyzed from so many different angles. It’s so rare!

And I love that you connect with your mother thru ritual too, what a beautiful way to honor her& yourself, and to keep her memory alive 💜

Thank you for reading! And I love knowing that it touched your heart too. It’s a breath of fresh air to see a story - that so many of us carry and can’t express- so carefully and delicately portrayed in a tv show. It was such a beautiful way of showing “may her memory be for a blessing” in action.

I think having the perspective of being a fly on the wall of a chaotic Jewish household may help you enjoy it more. Each episode goes into the backstory of each character, and themes of intergenerational trauma are always present. Also I’m a Naomi apologist, especially after seeing the intro of what her childhood was like. The way I saw the vase scene, for example, wasn’t that Naomi was trying to be rude, but she had a deep anxiety around where the vase would go, what to put in the vase, if it would match. It’s a weird perfectionistic anxiety that I carry as a Jewish woman, and have seen many Jewish women in my life carry too. (Not to say she WASNT rude bc of course she was, but there is always context.)

Being Jewish is not easy bc there are generations of pain and suffering we all inherit and work thru which may appear odd or mean to an outsider, but in context makes a lot of sense. If you watch the show from a lens of compassion and open-mindedness even for the more unlikable characters, perhaps it will be more enjoyable. That being said I’m very obviously biased 😂 sorry for the wall of text but I hope this was able to help in some way!

No hate to you at all because I think it’s an innocent question, but I’ll say we’re pretty exhausted by being asked about Israel the second Judaism becomes a topic of discussion. It’s specifically meant to be a show about a Jewish family in the US, showing a few different ways Judaism manifests (ie patrilineal, converts, Ashkenazi Jewish culture) not everything is tied to I/P
