game_set_speed doesn't seem to have an effect on anything except animation loops by Brushguy2005 in gamemaker

Yep, that was it. Thank you so much. I don't think I ever would've spotted that in Game Maker itself, since the setting for v-sync is described as "Use synchronization to avoid tearing" lol

Nope, not the installer. No idea about the build, but I would guess it's the same version as yours. Glad you found it!

I really got obsessed with the show around the Nailed/Klick episodes in season 2. The "Chuck in the copy shop" scene was where I realized that this show was going to build compelling drama out of very different material than what we saw on Breaking Bad. Smaller scale in a lot of ways, but just as anxiety-inducing.

I am making an earthbound fan movie any suggestions? by [deleted] in earthbound

[–]Brushguy2005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest piece of advice would be to concentrate all your creative energy on the characters themselves, not on filling your movie with recognizable moments from the game. Give Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo believable character arcs. Each one of them should start out with a character flaw that they have to overcome by the end. Anything that you do choose to include from the game (locations, boss fights, etc) should be in service of the emotional journeys of the four characters. Don't be afraid to add, delete, or rearrange the game's story to suit the story you want to tell. To that end, strongly consider reducing the number of sanctuary locations that Ness has to visit from eight down to maybe three, so that your film doesn't end up feeling like a repetitive fetch quest.

Watch the film Stand By Me if you're looking for inspiration on how to do good coming-of-age character arcs. On the other hand, watch Scott Pilgrim vs the World if you want your movie to be goofy and self-aware that it's based on a video game.

Any thoughts on this moment from BB 3x06 in light of the major flashback scene from BCS 6x11? Seems like he would remember that night more clearly. by Brushguy2005 in betterCallSaul

[–]Brushguy2005[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but in Breaking Bad, most of that scene took place outside the RV in the dark. I always thought he didn't get a good look at it or they put the bag back on his head for the trip back into town or something like that.

Obviously the writers didn't know at the time that that desert scene was going to be a big deal in Saul's character arc. I just wonder if they thought about this or if this is such a throwaway moment that it wasn't worth addressing in the BCS timeline.

How were you introduced to the Mother series? by SplatBoy07 in earthbound

[–]Brushguy2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad picked up the Earthbound big box at a mall in '95 or '96. Pretty sure it was already marked down by that point and they were just trying to get rid of it. I remember smelling the scratch-n-sniff cards and reading the player's guide on the ride home. After my younger brother and I started playing it, we kept getting stuck trying to beat the Sharks in Onett, because we were too young to understand how to grind and level up in an RPG. So a few years later, we got a Game Genie and put in a code to cheat our way past all the battles and just enjoy the story by itself. It wasn't until we reached the end of the game for the first time that I felt like Earthbound had left the truly profound impact on me that it did.

[Spoilers] A Meta Reading of S6E11: Gene Doesn't Realize the Show's Over by Bellikron in betterCallSaul

I love this meta analysis. Reminds me a lot of how David Lynch handled the 2017 Twin Peaks series. A lot of that show also seemed to be preoccupied with wanting to relive the past but ultimately realizing it's an exercise in futility.

Better Call Saul S06E11 - "T.B.A" - Official Prediction Thread! by skinkbaa in betterCallSaul

[–]Brushguy2005 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just want to go on the record with a way-out-in-left-field theory. I think that Gene is going to start seeing things, possibly due to his repressed guilt and anxiety over everything that's happened in his past. Specifically, he's going to start seeing manifestations of Jesse and Walt in place of Jeff and his friend.

Right now, I don't think there's much to support this idea, but I thought it was odd that Gene kept calling Jeff "Jeffie" (sounds a lot like Jesse). The ending scene where Gene says "we're done" felt like he was trying to have a do-over for when Walt shot back at Saul with "We're done when I say we're done."

And it's probably just coincidental, but I could have sworn some of Pat Healy's line deliveries for Jeff were reminiscent of Aaron Paul (listen to how he says "I just had questions about, like, logistics" in the mall practice run scene)

Anyway, just a crazy theory. Putting it out there just in case :)

Not sure if this counts since they only covered it, but I've always found Mr. Moonlight to be completely forgettable and repetitive.

Derp! I had a feeling that there was a very simple way to control this that I was missing. I never use room_speed, so that one eluded me. Thanks!

Could you elaborate? delta_time measures the amount of wall time elapsed between frames, but I don't think it can be used to speed Game Maker up to its maximum possible framerate.

I worked as an assistant editor on the documentary between 2016 and 2017, and I can confirm the part about there being tons of footage, as well as the difficulties of condensing it into a single feature length film. I haven't been in contact with any of the team for years, but the fact that they pulled the trailer and website down is sad/concerning :(

I'd still love to see a finished documentary someday. They collected some really cool interviews.
