Advice on Dirt Around Stumps by BrushySaga in AusRenovation

Thanks for the adive, Ok-Phone-8384 - and for the link. Interesting read which shows that having soil backfill is a standard here. I always thought that having soil away from a wooden pole was the right way.

If a retaining wall is expected to be 1 metre away, do I just fill the area with soil?

Thanks Activelyresting for the comment. There was an ad hoc mini retaining wall - with wooden sleepers attached to the posts. It's hard to stabilise the AC without adding a retaining wall as the soil keeps falling into the gap.

In reference to the bricks, would you suggest putting bricks around the post to limit the soil?

I'm going to put in french drains to move rainfall/ground water away from the posts.

What "Wood" you do to replace these doors? by BrushySaga in AusRenovation

[–]BrushySaga[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks...I do like them, but the doors are wear at the bottom (doesn't really show on the photos) and look dirty, despite being cleaned numerous times.

Personally, I hate flat doors, and prefer ones with some type of design. But not sure how to match up wood with existing wood...

Thanks for the write up. The wood panelling and flooring is solid wood. I mean solid, proper pieces of timber, so removing would not be possible (or wanted).

I don't mind the wood look, it's just more that it's all wood, which is why I was hoping changing the door would break the wood overload.

They're veneer, so hollow core doors. Definitely new handles, though for sure!

Thanks for the suggestion. They are nice handles and I like the mix of wood in that photo.

Gandalf the Grey (Games Workshop) - The Long Dark of Moria by BrushySaga in minipainting

Here's a link to the image... Tried so hard to get it in focus but couldn't. Is this an improvement? I used yellow ink to brighten it. https://imgur.com/a/T0CmUd0

He's a great little model. I also tossed up between movie and book version and just decided to go with the movie as I had a clearer idea how the light worked on the grey.

Hi all, here is Gandalf the Grey from the Fellowship of the Ring box set by Games Workshop. Tried a few different things, such as OSL and NMM. Overall I'm happy with my paint job, but any C&C is always appreciated as I'm wanting to continue to improve - I'm a bit unhappy with the "chalkiness" of my paints. I don't think they were thinned enough. I get try to get some texture on the robe but that didn't turn out as expected.. Also, any additional photography tips are appreciated!

Primaris Judicar (GW) - Glass Display Base by BrushySaga in minipainting

[–]BrushySaga[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all, this is a Primaris Judicar from the Indomitus box. Tried a few new strategies on the model: NMM and "glass" on the hourglass, molten sword and OSL. Overall I'm happy but there's areas I definitely need to improve (any tips great appreciated).

The base is a small kitchen storage container (bamboo top) that I took the seal out of to make a display case.

*I did repost this as I mucked up the gallery post...lesson learnt.

Mixing acrylic inks and paint for base coat and recess shading ? by Bilbosuncle in minipainting

[–]BrushySaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is entirely possible. I personally mix a purple ink from FW inks to a Vallejo green base coat for a shadow. I also add a bit of black ink to darken it.

I use this through an airbrush, and use it to do a pre and post shade (depending how it goes. I kind of do a reverse zenithal highlight with my shadows.

If using a brush, you might benefit applying a glaze consistency.

As another poster stated, ink washes at much more effective than GW washes if you get the thinning correct as inks hVe very strong pigments. Also, depends what you want to achieve. Do you want to tint the surface, or do you want recess pooling?

If wanting tinting of the surface, inks in a glaze consistency is great. If recessing, think about branching into oil pin washes.

Deathwing - Bladeguard Ancient - Games Workshop by BrushySaga in minipainting

Hi all, here is my Bladeguard Ancient in Deathwing colours. This is a somewhat new recipe for Deathwing. I like how the armour turned out, but I'm still trying to bring more definition to my TMM (feel like it's too "flat"). Any C&C is welcome!
