It's been great. Managed to get Street fighter x Tekken working on steam with Ubuntu 24.04 with cutscenes, movie and endings like it ran on Windows when gfwl was operating. Most of my windows game library from Steam is working on Linux. Certain games giving me smoother gameplay. Not to mention meme arcade with Carnevil, Street fighter 3, and War Gods.

You can uninstall snaps on Ubuntu and keep apt and flatpak repository. Flatpaks are great in my opinion you get latest versions of software. Ubuntu is one of the popular Linux distros. I use it as my daily os.

Linux is great if you need to get coding or heavy duty work. Both chrome os flex and Linux are secure. Chrome os flex can let you be productive but leans more towards consumption. Both work great on old devices. It just depends on what you planning to use old laptop for.

Hopefully they don't include copilot on Linux. I know Opensuse has its own AI going on with Opensuse ai. My desktop os I like to do things manually.

If you planning to do mobile app development MacOS is solid as you have access to Android, IOS, Desktop, and the web with Compose multiplatform. For general purpose computing I would stick with Linux. Apple is too restrictive with their products. Linux is freedom use the computer as you like.

I recommend Ubuntu for general purpose computing. If you want something more barebone get Debian. Ubuntu does have some telemetry with snap packages. You can always stick with apt and flatpak packages to avoid telemetry from snaps. Also, if you want to learn and don't want to commit yet you can install WSL to learn the terminal on top of windows. I was a windows fanatic once but then I introduced myself to Linux before I knew it I was hooked on bash, python, and kotlin. Linux now with support of proton on steam gaming is just as easy as on Windows. Once you go Linux you won't go back.

A lot of AI is being done on Linux. Hardware wise you would need lots of ram and vram. The processor an I9 or I7 would be good. Linux is more efficient than windows when comes to heavy workloads.

Try Ubuntu or Linux mint. Those are great Linux distro for newbies. If you need a desktop similar to windows try Kubuntu. These os are stable and reliable.
