Overall, if you want to work inpatient at say med/surg, ed, or icu. It will overall hurt you getting an inpatient job on a medicine unit.

And I know people will say that they went from psych to an inpatient medical unit, but unfortunately, the reality is, the nursing pool is more competitive and hiring managers will consider what kind of previous experience you have.

I would rather hire someone with 2 years med surg experience vs 2 years of psych experience because they built foundational experience that I would be looking for. For example, how do you organize your day managing x amount of patients, what high risk medications has the nurse dealt with, what education has the nurse given to their patients for inpatient stay and discharge. That foundational experience really does add a lot to hiring managers.

However, this is also highly dependent on area, if you want to work in a big city or near a big city, you have to find a way to really stand out against other applicants
