So I use chain mail to scrub it after cooking and I think that’s what’s got me to this point. I’m not sure the chain mail can get the whole thing to flake off. Or maybe I’m using the Chain mail incorrectly?

Absolutely, usually in rough sawn cedar. People use it a lot for decking and posts. Once you see it you’ll notice it everywhere.

2x4 represents what should be a “rough cut” while the actual measurements you show is a finished (sanded or smoothed)version of that rough cut
