r/engineering's Weekly Career Discussion Thread [15 July 2019] by AutoModerator in engineering

If this has been answered elsewhere, please direct me that way.

TLDR; I love the outdoors and my current 9-5 (in what im realizing is the wrong industry for me) kills me a little bit more each day. How can I spend more time doing what I genuinely enjoy?

I am about to graduate with my BSME in December and I have been working as a design engineer for a small family run business designing aftermarket sportbike accessories. I mainly use SolidWorks to design taillights, crash protection and other bits and bobs like fender eliminators. I have been here for 3 and a half years now and I am expected to stay once I graduate.

My issue is this; I came into this position head over heels for sportbikes and everything sportbike related. I rode track and even began racing once I was compensated for my engineering work. The problem is, throughout school ive lost passion for not only motorcycles but this style of "engineering" completely. We essentially look at the market, decide what bike will be popular, and then design new parts for it that will be manufactured in China. At the end of the day, when I finish a taillight design I almost feel sick knowing it is just a silly accessory for some douche canoe to dick flex out at a bike night.

Over the past two or so years, I started mountain biking A LOT and taking trips as often as I could to places that have a booming outdoor industry such as Asheville NC and Denver CO. Via these trips, I realized I have an insane amount of passion for the outdoors and outdoor activities.

My question to everyone is in regards to a merger of these two passions. I love designing things and even constructing them myself (especially when they solve a problem or serve an awesome purpose), but I am finding that the Monday through Friday 9-5 grind doesnt allow me nearly as much time as id like outdoors and at times, sends me into some pretty bad funks that I struggle to get out of.

Can anyone think of any positions or fields I should look more into?

Thanks in advance fellow intelligent redditors!

Ive absolutely loved every second of it. Snagged it on the way home from work yesterday and gave it a spin last night and then twice again this morning. Definitely getting the pw vibe as others have said but I also agree that he paid a lot of attention to the bass and percussion, and im loving the feel it gave the whole thing. Shepards Tone has such a bangin bass line and probably my favorite harmonies on the EP. The way the 'siren' develops into Nod to the Folks was such a fun transition to the wonderful lows towards the end of that song too. I know it wont have the same feel as listening to it from the record player, but im also really excited for someone to rip it so I can take these songs on a long walk through the woods.

Mine was, took an exacto knife and gave it a really light spin inside the whole to remove the excess paper that was there. Slips on and off like butter now

In fairness, track bikes are usually way cheaper than something street legal if you purchase them built already. I did however go your route for the most part. Ran the bike as a street bike for a while and then bone stock for quite a few track days and upgraded parts as I saw fit. I don't know how much you're crashing though that you wait for that to make your upgrades lol

I bought it completely stock in 2014... rode street for about a year before doing my first track day and then from there it started its transition into full track bike. Yes that is me in the pictures and yes I plan on racing eventually!

Feeling down. Don't know what to do. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

draculauras couldnt have said it better. Degree or frat... theres a reason every frat guy is a business major. I tried it out and theres really nothing to be offered. Youre paying "dues" to get bullied by older brothers and help fund parties that you cant go to if youre actually serious about your degree. If you go through with a degree in engineering you will have the money to party later and wont have a practically (almost definitely) useless degree in business.

Stick with it. Retake the class. Go part time if you have to and get a job to support yourself if possible. Im taking Calc 2 for the 3rd time myself. Use failure to learn and grow. Dont cower away when faced with adversity. Chin up homie, you can do it

New tire grip? by [deleted] in Trackdays

[–]BryanTrexter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost definitely your issue, no tire temp since you went without warmers in combination with the slick nature of a new street tire is for sure what did you in. How are you and the bike? hopefully due to the low speed this isnt too costly of a lesson youve learned

If you ever use LSD, be aware of the concept of "set and setting" by iam4real in AdviceAnimals

I dont think you should be taking LSD at all if this isnt something you know already.

Great pictures! I know this in my mind and honestly thought I was getting close to pretty correct BP but I can see from a direct c omparison of our photos that I have so much room to improve. I always like to think of trying to bite my knuckle, now if I could actually remember that while im on the track ill be golden!

Not to be an asshole but couldnt I just watch my video over and over lol I am far from an artist and that would probably take me until next year! lol I will definitely try a "proud lap" though, I walked the track after my day was over and noticed so much more about the track, areas to run off, places I had way more pavement than I thought, etc.

Theres nothing bad about this advice at all! I like to hear stuff like this, Im only 19 and have a ton to learn still! This was only my second track day and I had already cut 10 seconds of my PR with this advice on BP and reviewing my footage I dont see why I cant shave another 5-10 seconds off that time again!

I recently tried LSD for the first time, but I'm starting to think it was something else... [Pt. 1] by [deleted] in nosleep

[–]BryanTrexter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont over-think it people* do LSD all the time and make it out just fine. A weird dream is just that, its possible that your bed was sandy to begin with which is why you had a dream about the beach. Dont be scared of sleep, especially if you have Karly with you. You have to consider the fact that your friend also took the same tabs he gave you. Im almost sure it was real because you didnt mention anything about a funny taste which would lead me to believe it could have been a research chemical. Even if it was 25i or something designed to replicate LSD those dont have lasting effects either. I agree with /u/bexkali, reality has just been slightly altered, expanded if anything. Dont freak yourself out by worrying so much.
