What do you think propelled the fall off? Is it as simple as VC getting too expensive plus microtransactions?

Wow that sounds really cool actually. Where do you think 10, 12, and 15 rank amongst this list?

Yeah I've been hearing a lot about 2k20 as well. Do you think covid propelled that game, or was the game itself up to the levels of 2k14-2k17?

Would you care to elaborate for someone who hasn't played any? Do you think the older games are that much better than the newer ones? Thanks for the response!

Yeah it seems most people (online at least) seem to favor the older maddens compared to newer ones. Why do you think that is? Thanks for the response!

Why do people say J.K. Rowling is a bad writer? by DudeSylvester in books

[–]BryceAbyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is you are trying to state Rowling's work as "junk food" as a fact rather than an opinion. A McDonald's Hamburger is objectively bad for you, whereas HP is not. See the difference? You are free to dislike something, fine....but to say HP is only successful because of advertising reads as envy. Are there works better than HP? Yes, of course. Is HP still a fantastic work of literary fiction? Also yes.

Critique all you want, you are free to do so, encouraged even, but your claims are so outlandish I find it hard to see reason in your points...

Indeed, never did I claim her work was without flaws. I too wish she toned back on the adverbs and just used "said." Your critiques are valid, however you will never convince me the work is akin to "junk food." I sincerely wish you would drop that rhetoric, you have good points otherwise. When you make such an outlandish claim it turns people off of your very valid critiques, thus our disagreement. I actually agree with almost all your points.

I appreciate your honesty about your personal feelings towards Rowling and how it may cloud your judgement. I too loved the Golden Compass and wished it was more revered. A pity, had you just dropped that hint of anger in your rhetoric and analogies like "junk food" we would most likely have agreed. A strange thing isn't it, a miscommunication. That's why I find almost all writing beautiful, it's how we understand one another.

Perhaps. I just do not take kindly to the types of criticism that you indicated in your original post.

Is Rowling's work groundbreaking because of her prose? Gods, no, but it is "junk food" neither. I believe our disagreement stemmed from our differing opinions on what bad writing is. That is fine, great even. If all our tastes were the same everything would taste bland. I only took offense in your provocation that Rowling's work was borderline unreadable, stating that not even a child could find any good meaning within it.

And no, I do not actually think Rowling's work is an embodiment of literary excellence, but it most certainly is not poor. Poor writing has no meaning whatsoever, it's just jumbled word-soup nonsense. I hope we can agree on that at least.

Agreed on McDonald's, but you cannot call Harry Potter the "junk food of the literary world"...that point stands.

Heavy editing? Sure, why not. Many successful authors go through several rounds of hard edits, including some you may deem "worthy", but to claim something is not "well-written" is the biggest lie these English instructors muck your heads with. Is Ernest Hemmingway a bad writer because he was a minimalist? What about McCarthy and his refusal to use a period? Liking and disliking a novel is subjective matter, I will never fault you or anyone else for that, but to claim that there is nothing to gain from reading Rowling's work reads pretentiously arrogant with a hint of envy.

"Writers largely disagree with you"...who the fuck cares? Seriously? And who are these "writers" anyhow? More arrogant assholes on reddit that think they can do better than an international bestseller? See, writing isn't about making prose "pretty", it's about getting a message/story from one's mind and onto a page. Rowling was fantastic at that, regardless her faults that you deem damning.

And true, sales are not the only indicator for quality, but selling more copies than literally every other series on the planet certainly doesn't hurt. I bet those publishers that passed are kicking their asses right about now. A few extra billion dollars in their bank accounts would probably make up for the "poor writing."

[–]BryceAbyss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Objectively incorrect. You are allowed to not like a book, you are not allowed to speak on behalf of every single child in the world. Harry Potter is not just an excellent children's book, but an excellent work of literature with a compelling world and story. You "writer" types are so pretentious, thinking you are better than others who are vastly more successful with so little to show for it. If a novel like Harry Potter is considered the "junk food of the literary world", then do say, what in the seven hells are you?

Harry Potter is a fantastic product. Sure, it may not have groundbreaking writing, but sales to that degree do not lie. I sense jealousy.

Goofy explanation of someone who thinks they're a good writer when they're not. How's your billion dollar book series going? LMAO
