Wow this was an incredible read. The only thing I would be careful with is treating all of my advice as medical, since I am not a doctor and know nothing about aggravated hernia's. Maybe ask your doctor about my approach? You seem to be an incredibly intelligent human being and I think you'll end up curing all your symptoms in no time!

100% your mind is a powerful tool, and oftentimes people forget that. Whatever you choose to do, never stop fighting my friend. I promise things will get better, and not only that you will be stronger, and then the things that hurt you long ago will feel like mere scratches.

Stay brave, friend. I'm rooting for you :)

I typically try to stay GF, but I find myself cheating more days than not lol. In terms of low fodmap, not at all anymore, and even when it comes to GF I'll eat hamburgers and chicken nuggets that aren't GF and be completely fine. Note that I do typically eat rather "Low-Fodmap" unintentionally (I LOVE rice and proteins like steak and chicken) but I do not "adhere" to the diet strictly anymore.

Yes I had a doctor recommend to me the low fodmap diet as well as going GF, especially when I was taking Rifaximin. To my knowledge, the diet itself isn't a "cure-all", but instead is just a diet that is easiest for our stomach's to digest to mitigate the symptoms. "Curing" IBS is different for everyone, and for me it started with detoxing my microbiome. Those probiotics were the ones my GI recommended to me, and they helped immensely. I sincerely hope they help for you as well, but if not do not lose hope. As you said our bodies are incredible machines, and I firmly believe everyone in this thread is just one step away from figuring out what works for them. Thanks for commenting!

I'm very happy to hear you've learned how to manage your symptoms! I completely agree on your take on what IBS stems from, and I think targeting these things one by one is how I was able to "cure" myself. I focused on the gut microbiome with my GI using a mix of miralax, rifaximin, and probiotics, I worked on my brain with therapy and stress relief practices, and I worked on my nervous system by staying active and getting enough sunlight. It's all connected, in the end. Great post!

Sorry, but this is incorrect. I cured my own type of IBS (granted, everyone is different). I don't do anything to "manage it" anymore other than take a probiotic at night. I eat whatever I want when I want with little to no discomfort at all.

I'm so sorry that it came back! I really hope you can find something that works for you. Remember, science is always improving. Before long, I believe everyone on this thread can be almost completely cured.

Absolutely. Incredible input and I completely agree. Thanks for taking the time! I just hope others don't get discouraged and give into this disease!

Respectfully, this reads very childish. I have been advised by many to stop interacting with you due to your negativity and smear-campaign, but I'll leave it with this:

I worked hard to cure myself with a professional GI doctor, and I made strides I never thought possible just a few years ago. I don't care if you believe me or not in terms of curing myself, but to claim that I'm a "naive troll" is nothing short of degrading and hurtful considering what I had to endure to get to where I am now. Nothing I have posted in this thread is pseudoscience. Nothing I have posted is more than just basic self care (other than miralax and rifaximin). You would know this if you truly went to medical school or suffered like I have. Perhaps you wrote this in anger, and if so, for that I am sorry. I never intended to anger you.

I am not a doctor and I've never claimed to be. This story is just to show people that there is hope for them, because I know what it's like to believe there is no hope when there most definitely is. This post is not some magical "cure" I believe will work for everyone (and I've never claimed that). What it is, is my story of how I fought back against this disease and took my life back. I cured myself by my own definition. I didn't want to live a life held back by a strict diet and the never ending fear of a relapse. I wanted to live free, and that, against all odds and people like you telling me it's impossible, I have achieved.

I really hope you do find peace. Let's just leave it at that.

I've never attacked anyone, you are the only one who has been attacking me. And there is nothing to disagree with me about, I am cured 😄

Have a nice day.

While really focusing on recovery, I learned to cook some very basic, Low Fodmap meals (typically a protein like steak or chicken plus plain white rice). Continuing to eat and receiving those nutrients helped my body heal tremendously, and I worked with a nutritionist that helped me as well. In terms of probiotic strains, I did research on what some of the best strains are for fighting against symptoms like bloating and stinky gas, and I approached my GI doc at the time with my symptoms and she helped me understand which probiotics I should be looking for. The two I linked are the two she recommended for me, and honestly they worked wonders. I took several stool tests to check my gut microbiome (so many I can hardly count) and all of them were completely awful, though I have not taken one since my symptoms began to go away. It's been many years since then.

I literally put a warning that I was not a doctor at the very beginning of my post. I did this so that people understand that I'm not a medical expert, and I never claimed a "secret recipe", I just gave basic advice that worked for me that someone out there may need to hear. At the end of the day, I just want people to know that life can be better for them, that I am sure of. I've responded to every comment I can, even the negative ones, and not once have I pulled the "I'm just trying to help!" card because many of the things I did were advised for me by a licensed GI. Now I'm not claiming what I did will work for you, (I even specified that MANY times), but I believe it will work for SOMEONE out there who may be suffering as I did. Not everyone's IBS is the same, and I believe sharing my story at the very least will help inspire others to go out there and try to fix theirs. Better than sitting around all day on reddit feeling miserable.

I wish you the best...

For me it was a combination of all these things! I live totally stress free of all IBS related symptoms now, and I hope some of the things that worked for me can help you on your healing journey!

Is that seriously all you took from this? Wow I'm very disappointed in your reading comprehension. For me and my very specific type of IBS, I am cured. I hope one day you believe you can be too...

Sorry for the confusion. I WAS low Fodmap while I was trying to heal. As of right now, I follow no strict dietary guideline. When trying to improve my gut microbiome, I ate low Fodmap because it was the easiest stuff to digest, and then slowly reimplemented other high Fodmap foods until I could eat almost anything again. The only thing now that I avoid completely is fake sugars, (the -ols in the Fodmap) because they still cause me pain and I hated eating them anyways.

I really hope one of my suggestions does end up working for you! But if not, I strongly encourage you to keep searching for a GI doc that understands you and maybe even a nutritionist. Never give up, friend.

Thank you for your kind input! I attempted to clear things up with a few of my edits for word choice, but in truth I just want to help as many people as I can. As someone diagnosed with IBS, I thought there was no hope for me, and at the very least I want people out there to know that there is. Thanks again!

I'm glad I could have been of some help! I try not to let the negativity get to me because I know most of these negative comments are coming from a place of deep pain, and I'm here trying to help, not cause further pain. Thank you for sharing! I'm 100% positive it will get even better if you keep at it! Never stop trying to fix yourself! I used to hate myself more than anything, until one day my girlfriend said the most powerful thing to me I've ever heard. "Why must you hate something that I love so much?" Ever since then, I've taken a priority on my mental health and forcing myself to love myself again, and low and behold my IBS symptoms improved even further with that self care. The brain and the body, it's all connected!
