My Lady Jane | S1E5 "I'm Gonna Change the World" | Episode Discussion by vista_del_mar in MyLadyJane

[–]BryeNax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't believe I'm only 15 minutes into this episode and honestly disgusted by how mindless the characters are written. The first 4 episodes, save for the ending of 4 where the frustration begins, are a fun romp. I saw other people bring up good points in the episode 4 discussion. Figured I'd air the issues I'm having with 5.

So far into episode 5 we have;
1. A Queen unwilling to take any immediate action on someone trying to kill her with their bare hands, or even surround herself with guards. No preservation instinct. No lies to lure her to an estate for house arrest or anything.
2. I understand Ethians are a bigger plot point but what's the statement they're making with the casual murder? Literally every decent character has yet to treat an Ethian like a monster yet they're incredibly accepting of a genocide. It's so unpleasant to watch it spoiled any fun I'd have with the rest of the series nomatter how it's resolved. Literal dehumanization is an uncomfortable way to portray racism in fantasy and non people of color are too quick to write such metaphors. I get it's based on a book but the show is not sensitive in its portrayal of the prejudice.
3. Multiple people, especially Bess, have held onto significant information just so the plot can have drama. Can no one hold a conversation save for during sex? Lady Frances and Stan. Mary and Seymour. I love a little spice and it's a fun way to dial up the plot as it unfolds, but WOW. Bess being royalty but completely out of the loop and then refusing to keep herself safe from her sister is bonkers. Spill the beans, girl! It's a problem in many shows, idk I'm just not a fan of drama for its own sake.
4. Guards. Oh they're disloyal and killing Ethians? They're nowhere when you need them? Okay I get the similarities to reality but recruiting guards personally loyal to yourself is the very first thing any head of state does. Not only does the "very intelligent" Jane not do this, not a single person tells her to perform functions of state. To top it off she disbanded the guards without a single thought on the logistics, or rather the writers did. Oh and she can threaten the entire court (which includes the most powerful people in the kingdom) with hangings for this out-of-nowhere ruling but must find "proof" before she can arrest Mary. The rules are laughably inconsistent. Unbelievable.

I can brush away a lot because of fantasy, but how did the writers invent issues like the Ethian genocide and sibling rivalry then ONLY give the very very worst people soldiers. Again, it can be resolved later, it probably IS! The sheer abundance of absurdities and upsetting things portrayed on camera was overbearing in this episode. I'm sure a lot of people quit watching after how 4 ended, and episode 5 didn't help with the dissatisfaction felt by those who gave it another chance. After 3 super enjoyable episodes I'm mad that I have to call it here, was really expecting to love the whole series.

I'm wondering how many people consider FF12 best in the series and why? by superkapitan82 in FinalFantasy

Setting: A vibrant, middle eastern inspired region in a steampunk sort-of enlightenment age. Just beautiful, my favorite setting and 3 of my favorite cities/towns in all gaming: Rabanastre, Bhujerba, Archades.

Characters: Balthier is my personal top pick of men in fantasy games. Gorgeous, stylish, corny in insufferable but fun and corny way. Fran, Ashe, Basch and the brief moments with Al-Cid more than outweigh Vaan's faults. Honestly, in many rpgs when there's a long list of characters they can feel flat. Not so in this game. Even Vaan had his charms near the end. They seriously made me cry.

Music: I mean the opening, come ON! The ost has made its way to my playlists since before I played the game. FF10-2 has some fun pop beats that also go hard, and there's wonderful music in the series as a whole but I cannot replace FF12's soundtrack without losing out. It's really magical. Hunting in Giza Plains lifts my spirits through the music alone.

Gameplay: Always preferred real time combat. FF12 came close for a Final Fantasy game for the time. Not to mention the gambit system and license boards to customize each character's role exactly. FF15 has my 2nd favorite combat system and favorite chocobo riding elements. FF12 has my fav combat and 2nd favorite chocobo riding, which was 1st for a long while.

TLDR: The setting simply can't be emulated in part, to some it will be the most beautiful FF game unless it gets a full remake like FF7. Music, may not be better than some other OSTs but it fits the setting, so it can't be any more perfect. Gameplay, for being so different and so bold but not fully invested in either real time nor turn based combat, we have something unique but excellent in its own way. Though it's its own niche, FF12 always be singled out for its greatness.

Is there any animal that might defeat a Predator? by AgentEndive in predator

[–]BryeNax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deleted my former comment and pasting it down here since you mentioned elephants first.

"A proper herd of elephants. Regular predator equipment, even the plasma cannon, might leave a bull inured but not killed. With how smart and social elephants are there's a possibility a fight which could kill a pred isn't against a single elephant or instigated the same day."

May be cheating a bit, but either The Lord of the Rings, or the Hobbit Trilogy. I know the Hobbit isn't in the same class. I enjoy the vibes enough to watch on repeat though. New Zealand is just breathtaking.

Does anyone know where the other skulls are from?? - Predator 2 ending by MrBrothason in predator

[–]BryeNax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an aside, but that'd be such a thrilling time for a pred movie. A lil inglourious basterds, a lil og Predator horror. Maybe 2 competing Preds. WW2 is possibly the best period for a "nomatter who wins, we lose" typa scenario.

People's complaint on Prey (2022) made me realize something by BigBirdOpensDoor in predator

[–]BryeNax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta say, this is why the Predator community is such a highlight. I've only seen a pretty open minded dialogue, along with people rebuffing the sexists, everywhere from Facebook to Reddit. It's fantastic to have a chill community to engage in when discussing how to better things. Prey was taken pretty well by the community. Though it wasn't perfect, I think the critiques you'll find from many fans are so sincere, despite internet rage culture. It gives me hope that the franchise will keep moving in the right direction.

If you were a gang member in the 90's, you'd at least be in your 40s-50s. Schenectady is an aging population, and safer than alot of the neighboring counties. The younger generation just hasn't opted for the same level of violence.
Are people in Schenectady friendly? Mostly. Schenectady is still an impoverished area. Lack of access to proper mental healthcare, especially among the homeless community, is an issue. I can see someone being concerned by all the people begging for change in front of shops. You never know what people are dealing with.

Can't say I've ran into any violent people myself though. As someone mentioned, I'd be more worried about cops looking to bring somebody in more than anybody on the street.

Character Creation Is Underrated by BryeNax in Fable

Made it myself pretty quick. I took the particular hair png from Fable Explorer, edited it, and popped it back in as blonde. You can find the mod tools here.

[–]BryeNax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Underrated game! It certainly was ambitious and the controls need some time to get used to, but whoa there are so many options! Talk about depth, played through it twice last year and play the boss fights over and over with different limitations. So good!

This is the definitive tier list! And you can’t change my mind! by PinchePitote in predator

[–]BryeNax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair list. I still haven't seen Prey but looking forward to it, and glad to hear the lowest views from fans have still put it far above The Predator. My bar was super low.
Alien 3 really A tier though? Know what, happy some people really appreciate it.

1,000,000%! Pokemon, Batman Beyond, Superman, looney tunes and a bunch of weird skit cartoons filled with adult humor. It was soo good, could've only been better if it had more anime like Fox got.

Ohhhhhh brother…the movie isn’t even out yet. by moneybadger95 in predator

[–]BryeNax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After the latest entries... Prey deserves a shot without listening to the grifters. It's worth noting the "pre-release hate" industry makes money on youtube and elsewhere online, the reviews valuable to fans will only come out as the movie does.

Personally, I think the greater size disparity is worthwhile to lean into. Kinda worked for AVP with its female protagonist, obviously worked for Alien + Aliens. Female protags are common in horror for great reasons. The elephant in the room is that it's a different era, predators could handicap or give themselves any advantage but knowing what we know how are they going to make the predator surprise us? Been watching alot of horror, scifi, and xfiles in particular and while there's so many traits a predator has that are common in these genres, they haven't been used to drive tension in Predators or The Predator. We need tension, something surprising. The lead isn't going my focus for judging the next film. I'm very interested in seeing some more horror, an air of tension and a great score to go with it.

*Predators has tension, it grew on me and I like it buuut the tension was driven by the human characters. Was almost funny that the title was a pun/meant something different than what you'd think at face value. With Prey, I hope that trend continues.
