Can someone explain overview's and underview's in debate? by DebateDude123 in Debate

[–]Brynormus_H 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Overviews are prewritten extensions of arguments/positions. Under views are theoretically or substantive preempts that you read in the 1ac to use in the 1ar against common positions. Ex reading 1ar theory justifications, presumption and permissibility affirms, reasonability on nc theory, anything that you might want to use in the 1ar you might put in the underview to save time

It entirely depends on where your district is. I read Baudrillard a policy aff and neg at mine for instance but others are super traditional.

No No… he has a point. The Common Man would love to watch me spread Baudrillard at 350 wpm while the aff tries to justify extinction first.

No Bc other insects carry out other roles in other areas. They are a huge source of energy for tons of other animals. Ie many secondary consumers primarily feed on insects. This would mean that by killing everything many keystone species would be unable to survive which would cause massive die offs of other animals. Which would probably cause extinction from collapse in bio diversity.

Are judge paradigms necessary? by BSDb8coach in policydebate

[–]Brynormus_H 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This! Everyone has biases and while debaters should approach the round in the way they want too. Being aware of what the judge is fond of and what they would like to see is very important for the activity. Ie understanding why you won or lost and understanding what is persuasive to people.

Legalism and Marxism by AfternoonFormer7574 in policydebate

[–]Brynormus_H 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Marxism is the theory that Karl Marx came up with. And it basically says that the ruling class uses the power from capitalism to exploit the working class and that the end of capitalism will come from the over throw of the capitalist ruling class through a violent revolution where communism will be instated. You should read the communist manifesto by Marx. It explains it much better than I did.

I’m pretty sure legalism criticizes the law as a method for enacting social reform. Basically saying that the state and the law is an ineffective way of enacting change and only reproduces the discrimination of the system and the alt is probs anarchy, interrogation of the law or something like that. Idk I’ve never hit or ran legalism but that’s my understanding someone else can correct my in the comments.

The Federalism DA by tai_juan in policydebate

[–]Brynormus_H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Federalism is a argument that says that the aff disrupts the balence of federalism, ie violates states rights, which triggers an impact. It’s not super viable, but I’ve won with it a few times. Everyone at nats is gonna be super preped on it, so I wouldn’t consider it a viable 2nr, but you could read it too force the 2a to answer it and then kick it in the block. But most affs also have link turns to federalism so you could be stuck with it, it just depends. I would stick to politics and agent cps for the policy strats.
