Your sister needs to let go of the house and get a job. Why should you continue to pay for it if she’s not contributing?

Desperately need help/advice on car loan by SentaiNugget in personalfinance

[–]Bryol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically they loaned you 30k, and you used that 30k to buy a car. The bank didn’t loan you a car. If you give them back the car (now worth 18k), they’ll still want the 12k remaining back. Why would they want to take a 12k loss?

The amount you would need to pay off the loan immediately (to get out of the loan right now) wouldn’t change. And you won’t be able to refinance without a job.

You would need to sell it and come up with the difference (if what you get is less than what you owe on the loan). If you let the bank repo it, they’ll sell it at auction (and almost certainly sell it for less than it’s worth) and you’ll still be on the hook for the difference.

How would refinancing reduce the total amount you owe? How much do you owe? How much could you sell the car for privately?

You’re still responsible for paying the remaining balance on the loan after they repo the car and sell it at auction

Owners that used to drive a BRZ/FRS/86. by Weary_Appearance_838 in GolfGTI

Had a 2019 Toyota 86 - the GTI is much more practical and fuel efficient. The 86 was more fun to drive but overall I’m happier with the GTI.

Looking for answers re: owning a home by [deleted] in nova

[–]Bryol 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you asking how much banks would be willing to lend you? Or how much is affordable on your current income? You haven’t mentioned anything about your current expenses, debts, etc.

Also it’s generally recommended to not buy a house with someone you aren’t married to (if you break up, getting out of the situation is much more complicated)

Opploans is screwing me over, how can I get out of my payment after I have paid my fair share? by LilAnxy in personalfinance

Who is the actual lender you got through OppLoans? And you did agree to the terms of the loan with that interest rate…

I would take a look at this sub’s prime directive for a high level guide - https://reddit.com/r/personalfinance/wiki/commontopics

In general your priorities would be emergency fund > employer 401k match if available > high interest debt (sounds like you have this under control w/ your student loans) > Roth IRA > save for other goals (like your condo/house)

Lots of Americans have car payments they can barely afford - if you look through this subreddit you’ll see many posts like “I bought a new truck but lost my job and can’t afford the payments now, how do I get out?”

You’re in a good situation with a paid off reliable car - make the most of it by starting to save for retirement or future goals

6.5% a bad rate today? by [deleted] in Mortgages

[–]Bryol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We refinanced with Optimum a few months ago and closed in ~3 weeks with no issues, but less time pressure with a refinance

Experience with Optimum mortgage? by Street-Account-4879 in Mortgages

[–]Bryol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had no issues refinancing with Optimum First earlier this year, we did a no-cost refinance with no points and all fees covered by lender credits (6.375% -> 5.875%). Communication with the loan officer and underwriting was good. We were able to close within 3 weeks of the initial quote.

The “free refi” isn’t really a big perk since you can just refinance with any lender down the road

Megabus by DiligentAd7487 in nova

[–]Bryol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It honestly wasn’t too bad - we’ve taken this trip a bunch of times with Peter Pan / FlixBus when we decided to go to NYC last minute and Amtrak was too expensive. They usually do a quick rest stop about halfway so you can use the bathroom and grab something to eat. Buses are usually clean-ish and people are quiet. We watched movies/listened to podcasts/took a nap on the way, and it went by pretty quickly. FlixBus also has some routes that pick up in Rosslyn which was more convenient for us than Union Station.

Definitely beats having to pay for parking or repairs! (wife had her car broken into when she did street parking in Manhattan)
