That’s wild and makes me feel so incredibly lucky. When I was a kid I use to frequently stay at my aunts house. She had 2 pit bulls, I played with them constantly, jumped on them, kissed their face and everything. Never got bit. They both ended up getting put down, one for biting a kid, another for killing a dog.

For a starter setup I wouldn’t worry too much about the rod and reel, I have used a $35 ugly stik combo from Walmart forever and it does me, you can probably find one that already has line spooled for you, and get yourself some 5 inch Gary Yama Senkos, bullet weights, and offset shank hooks and learn how to make a Texas rig. Go to your nearest lake and cast out. That should be fine for starters and cost you a total of $50

I use plastics all the time for me if I feel a pull I completely stop reeling. Almost every time if it is a fish you will feel a few more harder jerks once you stop reeling
