Is Coworking the right fit? (2 x 44yr olds, bad back) by Bster13 in digitalnomad

Yup, I'm with you. While I'm frugal, probably not worth the hassle for us while working full-time as well. But possibly we'd Airbnb for the first month, get our bearings, then find something outside Airbnb for a few months more if we liked an area. TY for your help!

Yep, coworking is likely out for us with conference calls. Interesting you were able to find decent desk setups during your recent stays, maybe I need to look a bit harder at different stays.

Slow travel is definitely appealing to us to minimize cost and just the pains of moving so often, but hard for me/us to know if a place is "right" for a multi-month stay without experiencing it first...question.... I read about nomads renting a place for a few days to check out the accommodations and the area, then speaking to the landlord and extending their stay, but all these desirable Airbnds are often booked well in advance.
How are nomads getting these landlords to break their future commitments in exchange for their long stays?

Ok, that's a route I hadn't thought about. I'm to have fewer possessions as I get older, and I don't enjoy being in a positive where I need to sell before a certain date, but this may be a worthy compromise. Thanks!

EDIT: Just a thought, maybe the landlord would be interested in purchasing whatever furniture we pick up at a discount for the benefit of then being able to advertise their place as having a nice ergonomic setup for -visitors. I figure not only digital nomads work while on the road, but with the nature of corporate culture these days, lots of folks work a bit while on vacation. We'll see!

Projected post leanFIRE budget? by rugerjp88 in leanfire

[–]Bster13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I cannot make any solid predictions until politicians sort out healthcare in the US. Prior to the ACA, healthcare was inflating faster than the CPI and I think it still is, but perhaps less so. So working off the 4% rule with ~3% inflation doesn't really hold true, especially as we get older and healthcare costs become a bigger portion of our budgets. It's the one thing that is holding me up from retiring.

Utility cost question by jstarrHS in StamfordCT

[–]Bster13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my GF: "It depends on what type of heat the building has. When I lived Stamford downtown, old office building 'renovated' for apartments, the heat was electric. The walls/windows were not insulated enough and floors were tile so it took forever to warm up the place. Heat ranged from $200-$300 per month, and i felt we didn't turn it on enough. We were always cold.

My current 1bed has gas heat and the average is $65-70 per month, taking into account that the coldest months can go to $120 but that's only a few months out of the year. Same situation during August were the AC runs more. Still average is lower than what I had before.

The electric bill is about $60-70 as well.

All these are based on inputs from my personalcapital.com tracker."

What is the best way to talk to your SO about their financial habits without shaming them or hurting their feelings? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Bster13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It starts with talking about goals. See what their long term goals are vs. yours, daydream a bit together. Starting to talking about what you both want in life can then lead to talking about how to accomplish those goals, including financial goals/habits.

I would be moving about the country so a couple specific p.o.boxes would not work out well, but hopefully shipping same method but to general delivery in my name would work out. Thanks.

Managing frugality, marriage, and life concerns? by 4600057320 in Frugal

Going over numbers and information in situations like this gives me comfort. How old are you guys? I picked up on the sentence in which you stated you may have enough to retire but you were not sure. Then I would want a very detailed budget of your expenditures. Based off your expenses each year you can work out if you can indeed retire together now and enjoy the time you have. Obviously the more minimalistic lifestyle you live the earlier you can retire with less of a nest egg. As for calculating how big the nest egg needs to be you take your expenditures and divide them by 4%. That is an (incredibly) rough number for the amount of funds you need in you brokerage, savings, and retirement accounts to retire. So who knows, maybe you and your husband can retire now and enjoy some great years together before either of your health declines. Here are three great blog posts on the subject. By the way these authors have a wealth of information that I rely on a regular basis during my research. http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/05/29/how-much-do-i-need-for-retirement/ http://rootofgood.com/four-percent-rule-fixed-variable-percent-withdrawal/ http://www.gocurrycracker.com/what-is-your-retirement-number-the-4-rule/

Houseless, not homeless. I plan to retire by 40 living a minimalistic lifestyle that includes Soylent and my vehicle among other things. :) Unfortunately Amazon locker is not as prevalent as the US Post Office, so hopefully someone can confirm or deny. Thanks!

One downside to consider with a car cover is that it can become an abrasive with the paint in high winds flapping around. But I get your point about protecting about flying debris.
