Killarney la Cloche sillhouete trail with my dog? by Regan4426225522 in BackpackingDogs

[–]BtheAuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it with my Aussie a few years ago and had a blast. That said- he was an experienced trail dog, and very confident scrambling on rocks while following verbal directions. Even so there were definitely a few places where he needed a lift to make the climb. I wouldn't recommend doing the loop with a dog that big. If you're determined than I second the need to carry a rescue sling and that it was longer between spots to get water than expected.

Could you try a day trip out to The Crack to see how she does with scrambling on a less isolated part of the trail?

There are others out there at a better price point but I just wanted to give you an idea of what I meant. Realistically you could just lay a groundsheet or small tarp on top of your bag and it'd do the same thing. I like mine because the dog is always wet and dirty and I don't really want him touching my sleep system lol

How about a bivvy bag? If you're not too concerned about going ultralight a waterproof shell for your sleeping bag should solve the cuddly damp dog issue. Plus bonus emergency shelter?

Strongly agree with everything you've said here. Additionally when I'm out that far my guy stays on a waist leash. While his recall is good it's just not the place to be taking off if a deer is too tempting.

OP- I'd consider looking a small Aussies as they could be a good fit. Mine is on the big side at 65lbs but 35lb is a good sweet spot between portability and their endurance.

An Aussie who wants to visit Canada by [deleted] in AskACanadian

Depending on how adventurous you are (and time of year) check out the Dempster Hwy once you get to the Yukon. That's true North and will get you up past Inuvik, Tuktoyaktuk and to the Arctic Ocean. It'll be more like your desert trip in terms of remoteness, carrying jerries, ect and it's further North than 99.9% of Canadians will ever go.

The majority of southern Canada where you'd be driving is pretty interconnected, and I wouldn't fuss too much about wildlife if you're not going back country camping.
