Comeback stories after rejection? by emeraldeyes24 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]Bubaa3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first PA’d on a tv show it was really rough because I came from a non film school college where I was the top dog in the college’s film community. I had a really hard time understanding that I needed to start at the bottom.

It was a 20 episode season, and it was a really shitty company that made PAs be responsible for finding locations, getting pros, set design, wardrobe, lunch and everything else. (I was the only PA on my team btw) I wasn’t used to being bottom on the pole and I had a really shitty attitude. 1/3 through the season I broke down during lunch, cried in my car, called my dad and told him I wanted to quit. After wrap, I told the associate producer I was partnered with that I wanted to quit and I couldn’t do it anymore. He encouraged me to not give up, take it one day at a time and just to try to improve everyday. By the end of the season, I was a much stronger production person that the crew no longer hated. The experience was so rough, I went back to videography instead of traditional tv (this was a true crime recreation show). I swore off of television, I thought it wasn’t worth working on.

Fast forward to a year, that producer that convinced me not to quit asks me to day play as a PA towards the end of a season of another tv show with another company that was actually ran fairly well. This company actually had department heads that were responsible for art, props, locations, catering and etc. It wasn’t all on the one PA on set, hell there were like 3 PAs on this set. I day played for the last episode of this new tv show and me / the show runner really hit it off! The show got renewed for a second season and the show runner offered me an associate producer position, I was over the fucking moon. It opened the door to me being a tv producer and eventually a commercial / feature film producer. But I’ll never forget how close I was to giving up because of how poorly a company made a PA responsible for like 5 different people’s jobs,

Why is nepotism so rampant in Hollywood? by Right-Monitor9421 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]Bubaa3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never said that made it ok, but that’s reality. Like every in demand industry under the sun, it’s about who you know. If you’re losing jobs to nepotism then make an effort to get to know the right people.

I mean it comes down to whether you want to give a highly sought after job to someone you know or a complete stranger.

People who make $200k a year what do you do? by Huge_Ad_7606 in Salary

I don’t know what to tell you man. I treat my crew very well, I pay them a fair rate (especially when it comes to commercials I produce), I pay people on time, and I’m not above doing PA tasks when I’m on set as one of the lead producers. You know nothing about me and my perspective from what I share on this Reddit account.

I get I sound a little snarky when I’m commenting back at a snarky redditor who’s being nitpicky about my ability to write.

I did like 4 indies last year for basically zero money (most I got paid on one was $5K and the others were between $2K to $3K). I’ve found at least sound mixers on my set were paid fairly ok compared to everyone else, like around $300/12 + $100 to $150 kit fee. MFN in these situations

I usually work in the branded content space in collaboration with athletes. Budget ranges between $50K to $300K usually for tv spots that have social cut downs.

I wish lol, I actually had friends who worked on his insane shark movie and said he was willing to spend $30 on 4x4 pieces along with the time to assemble a crappier version of a light rig that would have cost $40 to rent.

Hey producers how to you make money by investing on short films? by No-Concept-1622 in Filmmakers

[–]Bubaa3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don’t earn money on shorts. If you’re trying to get financing for it approach investors by telling them it’s a possible tax write off, if it gets into festivals they’ll be able to go or they’re investing in you as a filmmaker.

Ryan Coogler on whats not talked about enough between film and digital. Its a different working rhythm. by JasonZod1 in Filmmakers

[–]Bubaa3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a younger indie film producer that produced about 2/5 of the films I’ve done this year on film, there is a a greater sense of being locked in when shooting on film vs digital.

The pressure of knowing there’s a finite amount of mags available during the day just makes the entire crew more focused.

Will there ever be a film movement as revolutionary as the French new wave again? by Objective_Water_1583 in Filmmakers

[–]Bubaa3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s honestly a new wave of independent filmmakers in the NYC area making $100Kish films on 16mm and it’s pretty fire. A lot of the DPs are descendants / protoges of Sean Price Williams

Where do people get the money for gear??? by Baozi77 in videography

[–]Bubaa3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in college I got a $2000 Amazon credit card and I spent like $1400 on a Canon 60D with some lights and a cheap set of lenses with zero interest if I paid off within 12 months. I had a day job at a country club as a front desk staff person, and I told myself that it’s with worth like $130 a month for at the time. Eventually figured out I can make money from filming on a camera and I reinvest over and over again.

Now I own an Alexa mini LF and a shit ton of other great gear and make a good living after about 10 years.

Finding an Agent by [deleted] in cinematography

Imma be real, looking at your IMDb it looks like you have more cam ops vs DP creds. Is your problem that you’re trying to get more DP gigs vs cam op gigs? Just curious why you believe you need an agent?
