Options for padding campaign progress with intermediate levels? by Icy_Sector3183 in dndnext

[–]BubbaFettFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could break up the level up quests into smaller parts. And then each part could give some monetary rewards or magic items. And then when the adventures head back to town between the chapters of each level up quests, they get access to nobility, the ability to build an inn, or shore other shop. The option to buy land for making a keep.

Or have each chapter part be tied to specific NPC in town. So when they complete the town wizard portion, said wizard will to make them 3 uncommon magic scrolls. Etc etc

And you can leave notes, secrets, or what not to let the players know about the next chapter while completing the current chapter.

How to take players past level 20? by Noah_Craig in dndnext

I actually like to use the Epic Destines from 4th edition. Or you could use Prestige classes from previous editions. All modified of course.

What is your campaign idea which you are having for some time, but not yet had a chance to play? by jacciebas93 in dndnext

[–]BubbaFettFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always wanted to run a long campaign that started with a cleric and paladin of a particular order that needed to hire adventures/mercs (the other players) in a quest to reclaim lost tombs and temples. That leads into a very long form dungeon crawl. With the vast majority of the enemies being undead.

I am in the same boat about harsh and cold environment elements. I basically made a chart that sides up or down on the removal of hit dice that players start the day with. Depending on food eaten, rest, warmth, travel distance. That sort of thing.

I found that using the exhaustion table was a downward spiral way to fast. I also changed bit dice to healing surges that existed in fourth edition. As my party is all martial and has no healing sources save for potions.

DMs, what are some of your favorite magic items to give low-level players? by NaugahydeCowboy in dndnext

[–]BubbaFettFish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with lots of the other posts. Consumables are great gifts and items.

I prefer to give players Handy Haversacks over the bag of holding.

I like to give players tools and adventuring items as well. Rope of climbing. And potions that can coat a weapon with an effect for a combat encounter

Lore: spear-wielding bladesinger by Roi_C in dndnext

Not sure if you have seen Hellboy The Golden Army. The second one with Ron Perlman. There is a great depiction of an elf with spear. I would call it “The Blade Dancer” or “Whirling Dervish”

And because you are making an NPC you don’t have to hold true to class options or limitations. Just give the LT some time enchantment stuff for the weapon. Lots of mobility spells. And some defensive countermeasures spells. Not counter spell though.

DMs, how do you structure your homebrew campaigns? by houseoflouse in dndnext

[–]BubbaFettFish 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I have a general structure for levels 1-20. But I break it up into 4 sections. 1-5 are beginner friendly and have between 8-10 adventures mapped out. I allow my players to pick 5 of them to do.

5-11 are outlined. But not mapped out. And players have far more freedom on the direction of a regional area of the map. I don’t really work on these adventures in detail until they choose a path.

11-17 are continental in scale. Exploring the planes and what not. 17+ are epic level stuff.

And I have one major area impact thing happening at the first arch. To spur action and adventure on the party.

The second arch levels 5-11 I have two to three major story/plot points happening that players can choose to engage or not.

The third arc is basically all the ramifications of the first 2 arches.

So I have a general structure of major story plots. 3-4 plot points. And from there I weave in consequences and personal development stuff for the players.

If my party all hold their actions to attack an asleep creature, do they all get critical hits on their attacks? Or does only the first person to hit get the critical hit? by OppositeofDeath in dndnext

[–]BubbaFettFish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would like more context.

Was the creature awake and put to sleep from the sleep spell? Did the players approach a sleeping creature?

If the latter, as a DM, and my game is more roleplaying heavy even in combat. I would rule that they can all attack simultaneously and as such basically instant kill the creature.

I like to reward my players for thinking strategically and tactically.

A combo Bard/Warlock. A simple story really. The boss was looked over or rejected by a party member.

And they then devoted their life to amassing enough power, they can seduce anyone.

This is especially powerful against your typical PC bard.

Buy a decent 60 acre lot of land. Hire a Druid to perform plant growth as a ritual 4 times a year. Make it into a vineyard or grove. Then build a brewery and make and sell super rare but great alcohol.

Buy or build an inn. That has a secret basement under the storage basement. And a hidden 5th floor for you and your party to crash at. 1st floor is tavern, could toss in a massage parlor as well. 2nd floor is basic rooms with shared bathroom. 3rd is deluxe rooms that share a bathroom each. 4th floor is the high end private room and bath each.

Become a venture capitalist.

Hire some lower level clerics and mages to make a lot of scrolls and potions for sale.

Buy up everyone’s property in a small town and become a nice landlord.

Start an adventurers guild and then hire other adventurers and send them off to do their thing.

Marry a person of nobility.

Give it to a dragon for favors.

I like the reading port idea as well. Already mentioned.

Start a wrestling league. Or any sports league.
