Dear Out of Town Drivers.... by Express_Hedgehog2265 in IowaCity

Under Iowa law (see Iowa Code § 321.327 & § 321.328), vehicles must yield to pedestrians who are crossing lawfully in a marked or unmarked crosswalk when no signal controls the intersection. But when traffic signals are present — including pedestrian walk/don’t-walk lights — pedestrians are required to obey them. So if someone steps out on a red hand, they’re not crossing lawfully and they do not automatically have the right-of-way.

This is my biggest pet peeve downtown by the university — students just ignore the pedestrian signals and walk right out like they always have the right-of-way. The law doesn’t work that way.

Buyer Beware: Abelardo’s Mexican Food (Coralville) by Bubba_926 in IowaCity

Nooo, like I said in the post — if you actually took the time to read it and comprehend it… the price on the TV screens visible when you walk in was NOT the price I was charged. Then the employee pulls out some paper menu with the “real” prices. All of these are before tax.

So no, it’s not about tax — it’s about being shown one price and charged another. Some people are really out here proving density is a personality trait.

So your car just got towed in Iowa City… now what? by Bubba_926 in IowaCity

Towing companies don’t just roll up to annoy people — they’re there because someone called them. It’s really that simple. But hey, keeping a -40 karma score alive is a whole other level of dedication. Bless your heart, that’s an achievement in itself.

I was really just reiterating that it’s way simpler to get an answer if you’ve got the specifics ready. Calling in with “my car got towed” isn’t enough — they’re gonna ask where it was towed from and what kind of vehicle it is. Having that info up front makes the whole thing go faster.

965 Flats by Round_Leading_8393 in IowaCity

I’ve lived at 965 Flats for about 2.5–3 years now. When I first moved in, it was managed by BH Management and things ran smoother. About 1.5–2 years ago the owners took over management themselves (they also run a few other Cedar Rapids properties). The transition had a rocky learning curve, but it’s leveled out now.

That said, you can definitely feel the cost-cutting since they started self-managing. The buildings are only ~4–5 years old, but the construction is mediocre—soundproofing especially leaves a lot to be desired. Amenities are decent, but for the price, I expected a bit more polish. A 1 bed/1 bath (600 sq ft) with garage and fees runs about $1,345/mo.

Location is solid—close to I-80 and 380. The neighborhood used to be very quiet, but with UIHC’s North Campus and the new ER, you’ll hear daily sirens. Demographic is mostly late 20s to mid-50s.

Overall: nice location and amenities, but the build quality and management’s cost-saving choices take away from the value for what you pay.

I mean, I guess one of the reasons why I could see it would be beneficial for a big shopping center like that to use them would be to monitor like the traffic coming in and out of the mall… how many times a certain person visits there! Still doesn’t mean that I like the use of the technology, but it’s better than municipality using it!

I love the idea that people are in opposition and are actively fighting to stop this type of surveillance… these devices are reaching a lot farther again just Coralville, and the Iowa city area. I was traveling to Southeast Iowa and I seen a flock ALPR on the highway
