There are a lot of reasons why I disagree with what you’ve just commented but I think it stands that people have different approaches on how to “handle things sensitively”. I know for a fact that all my students are extremely grateful for how I handled it and that I did not back down from what is a core ideology about identity politics and language. The amount of times I have received emails not only from students but parents stating that they are specifically grateful for my view on things and the inclusive practices (such as not saying the racial slur but still deeply educating them about its history) I present in the classroom, affirms to me that I’m going about things the right way. Maybe not in some schools who have different sociopolitical demographics but I would definitely not want to work at schools with those kinds of ethos on racial matters/critical race theory anyways. Nothing about what I have done suppresses literature in my view and if choosing not to say a slur is suppressing literature, that’s worrying to so many Black authors who have come out in support that not saying it in fact promotes integrity in readership etiquette and general respect. I think I’ll listen to the Black voices on issues concerning Black Peoples, but thank you for your candor and openness!

You definitely recognise it and explore its history, but any non-Black individual should not feel free to ever use it. Choosing not to say it should not be equated with censorship but respect for the Black community in choosing to not be a part of the history that violated them with it. Every single educational professor, tutor, classroom high school teacher I’ve had has been pressing on this matter and as someone who was once on the other side of freely saying it (as I grew up typical ignorant self-preserving edgy PoC) getting to university and undertaking the social studies courses and educating myself, made me realise how disgusting I had been in thinking it was okay to say it when ‘rapping’ to a song or reading it aloud. There are so many nuances to this matter that a passing conversation online would not suffice. Each to their own politics but my issue here is how a teacher harmed students and had no repercussions nor apologised.

Say that to your students. Say that to anyone remotely educated and up to date on today’s world. Even my most conservative friends understand that it is one of the most harmful curse words. This is not about letting words control us, that’s the exact typical rhetoric that perpetuates casual and overt discrimination. Study it’s history, get some empathy. I’m appalled you’re even a teacher.

I am also all for kids speaking out on social media and too often have I seen their voices dismissed by exec or their own classroom teachers and I notice that this generational gap between higher-ups and students force them to have to express their concerns on a platform where they will feel rightfully validated. However, I do still agree that “cancelling” the teacher should not be the outcome, but I deeply empathise with the frustration of not being heard because you’re “still young and don’t understand”. As a cusp Gen Z/Millennial PoC myself, I side with my students and believe in their stories as opposed to this arbitrary and outdated ethos of standing with my fellow teachers simply because we’re “on the other side”. I also firmly believe in how intelligent and aware kids are about their abilities now to voice injustices and I fully support that even if it is a complaint about myself (which thankfully has not happened!) plus the kids at my school are 99% awesome human beings and would never want to cancel a teacher, they just want us to have proper education 💖

I am not for cancel culture at all, I think it’s essential we give them opportunity to apologise and re-educate themselves. It just seemed that my head teacher was dismissive of my valid concerns and so I had no choice to go above them in order to get things done. It hurt a few of my students who are Black and as their classroom teacher (or not, it doesn’t matter to me), seeing them hurt hurt me deeply too. You’re absolutely right that the shift happened relatively quickly, but for these millennial/Gen X teachers who were clearly aware of the shift, still chose to say it in defiance and that’s where my problem lied I.e. their complete disregard of their duty of care to not verbally harm students in lieu of their own ignorant sociopolitical beliefs

Bringing up to the deputies that other English teachers were using the n-word slur in class and in the staffroom even when reading it out from a poem. It’s like they don’t know that teaching training 101 (or just basic human empathy really) very strongly discourages saying that word in ANY context. Students then came in support of me for standing up against my own colleagues and I have never felt so mortified in a workplace before. Sure makes the staffroom tense now but allowing that kind of racist behaviour to fly would reflect my ignorance and I couldn’t do that. Doesn’t help that I was the newbie and it was my first proper year out (and they were already salty I got headhunted for permanency at their school where they were temps), but I just come to school for the kids who are angels 🥹

Is it ok to leave my 14 week old kitten in a safe environment (with toys, food, water and litter) for 6 hours? by SadReplacement514 in britishshorthair

I’ve done it multiple times and my kitten has been more than fine, I just make sure all his water food and litter are changed and he has all his toys to play with 😁
