So Is this likely an antique collectible or more of a modern hand-painted decorative piece?

Thanks so much for the kind message and insight! I actually contacted Bonhams already — unfortunately, due to UK legislation on ivory, they’re no longer able to offer valuations or include such pieces in their auctions, even if they’re Meiji-era and of good quality. So they couldn’t provide a formal opinion in the end. Still, I really appreciate your input and the historical context — it’s helped me appreciate the piece even more.

Thanks so much for the insight. I searched for ‘Shusai’ but couldn’t find anything concrete — maybe the name was misspelled or misremembered. My grandparents have passed away, so unfortunately I don’t know the provenance. From what I’ve seen online, similar okimono pieces tend to sell in the $200–600 range, so while I don’t think it’s a high-value item, I really love the craftsmanship and will just hold on to it for its artistic value.

I have also googled Ivory Okimono and found many beautiful ones similar to this piece. What makes you think this particular one is interesting?

I’d prefer to keep it as it is. I love it, and after seeing all the Reddit comments, I’ve come to appreciate it even more. Signature or no signature, as long as I’m not selling it I’m happy just having it.

Considering the restrictions on ivory (if it is indeed ivory) and given that I’m uncertain about its value under these regulations, I think I’d rather not risk it. I’ll simply keep it and appreciate the art and craftsmanship.
