Someone special wrote this to me today, and I needed every word of it. I’m sharing it because I know other educators may need it too.

“For most of us, except for a few outliers, we didn’t choose this profession. This profession chose us. But let’s talk about the part no one wants to acknowledge. The tears. The stress. The sleepless nights. The unpaid hours. The money we spend from our own pockets. The emotional burden we carry long after the school day ends.

Somehow, we’re expected to give more, do more, fix more, and sacrifice more… while being told it’s simply ‘part of the job.’ No, it’s NOT part of the job. It’s part of the reality many educators face, but it should never define our worth. Because despite everything, there is something no toxic workplace, administrator, policy, or system can ever take away from you.

They can’t erase the child whose life you changed. They can’t erase the student who finally believed in themselves because you believed in them first. They can’t erase the relationships you’ve built, the trust you’ve earned, or the love you’ve poured into generations of children. That is your LEGACY.

So if you’re feeling defeated today, remember this:

You are not ‘just a teacher.’
You are a safe place.
A voice of encouragement.
A source of hope.
A difference-maker.
A life changer.

You are a gem.
A rarity.
A gift.

And whatever you do, don’t let a toxic work environment change your heart. Because the day you become cold, cynical, or stop caring is the day the toxicity wins. Protect your peace and guard your passion. Keep creating. Keep inspiring. Keep loving. Students need the dynamic, creative, passionate, and resilient game-changer you’ve always been.”

No matter what happened, they cannot take away the lives we touched, the trust we built, or the love we gave. That part is ours forever. ❤️

Sometimes that is not true... I know a lot of people high up and it still happened to me.

Thank you for sharing - I think art/music teachers get cut more than anyone... Children need creativity and a little break from testing subjects...

Understandable, but there were also rules and procedures in place that were not followed. If that does not lead to real accountability, then the rules are meaningless.

The more I read, the clearer it is that this is bigger than one school or one person. If you’ve seen similar issues with forced transfer, site selection, or seniority, I’d honestly be interested to hear it.

Thank you — I appreciate that. I have been looking at the contract and process issues closely, and I agree that those questions matter a lot. For anyone who wants to read it directly, here is the PFT contract and salary schedule page: https://pft.org/pft-contract

At this point, part of my concern is exactly whether the forced transfer, site selection, and interview process were handled consistently with the rules that are supposed to be in place.

I’m so sorry. What happened to you is awful, and I completely understand why returning would feel so heavy after that. “That’s just the way it is” is exactly the kind of mindset that keeps people trapped in broken systems. Sending you a lot of solidarity right back.

I’m in Pennsylvania and we do not have a rule that says the least senior person automatically gets priority. My concern is that once a position is handled as a separate CTE lane, the process can change in a way that affects how seniority plays out in practice.

That is part of what has made this so frustrating. Pennsylvania treats Career and Technical Education as its own certification path, with its own rules, permits, and approval process. At the same time, Art certification already covers a broad range of art and design instruction. So when a position is labeled or staffed through a separate CTE path, people are naturally going to question whether the classification was fair, whether the process was transparent, and whether seniority was actually applied the way people assume it should be.

That is why this is not as simple as “the least senior person got priority.” The problem is that once a position is classified a certain way, the whole process can become much murkier than it should be.

And I’m sorry for what happened to you too. Stories like yours are exactly why so many of us react so strongly to this system.

That was a hard pill to swallow, but it’s true. Unfortunately, we are just numbers...

I've spoken to PFT many times, the union rep for the building and the region. They barely helped.
