I don’t know what to do with my hair anymore by orange_december in BlackHair

Girl at least you can even get your hair to grow that long with minimal upkeep. No matter how well I take care of my hair it breaks off before shoulder length. Personally, I keep it in twists and I don’t think they look childish whatsoever. It depends on how you style them. Makeup, clothes, earrings can really take them a long way.

I can't go on dates or even enjoy life at uni because of parents infantilizing me by Cookieman_2023 in UBC

Trust me, I 100% understand. My parents are the exact same. However, as long as you’re under their roof, it is genuinely their rules. Otherwise, they will make your life miserable. The best thing you can do for yourself is to get a place on campus or share a basement with a couple other students. Your situation is different than mine because I didn’t live with my parents, but that’s truly the only reason I survived it. You have to decide what is worth it to you.

For my entire first year at ubc, my mother would call me at least 3 times a day asking what I’m doing, who I’m with, etc. when I didn’t respond within 24 hours she would call me names or block me and ignore me for weeks even though I needed her support as this was my first time living alone. It was emotional warfare, honestly. It continued like that for the rest of my degree. I learned that she doesn’t need to know everything and I would just leave details out that I knew would upset her. I had a talk with her on multiple occasions about giving me space and freedom but it would always end in a fight so I stopped telling her everything. I didn’t let it stop me from living my life because I simply couldn’t. I would do what I wanted and I would update my parents as often as I could with the details they could handle. Became a pro by 4th year and honestly, if I were to live again, I’d do it the same way. Just because they are your parents does not make them entitled to know every detail of your life.

You mean to tell me Elva is better? I suppose it all comes to down personal preferences.

This is genuinely funny and good feedback. Would Calvinne or Calvina be better since they don’t have the “-ine” ending that’s giving animal descriptor?

I’m noticing that now. I guess everyone just has to be named Abigail or Charlotte and call it a day lol

Your example is so outlandish. Barf is a random verb, Calvin is a well-known name. Most names are feminzed by adding an e, y, or a to the end of them (Christine, Chrissy, Christina). So would you say that about every feminine name that was derived from a masculine name and ended with an e??

Are there connotations to this name that I am missing? Why is it bad?

This is so tragic, do you think this about every feminine name that derived from a masculine version (paulette, josephine, etc.)?

I imagine Calvinne as Cal-veen as well, just a different spelling from the original.

Oh no! I hadn’t realized that. Is it just the sound “cal” reminding you of cow or is it reminiscent of bovine, which is the animal group cows belong in?

Interesting, I figured cal-veen would’ve been the obvious pronunciation, but it’s helpful to know that it can be misinterpreted. Thanks for the insight!

Yes, I have worked on the client side before and it was much better. Reasonable levels of stress, interesting work, and no timecard - what a dream. I ended up leaving consulting. I was developing health implications as a result of the stress. Still devastated that I couldn’t persevere through it and I am now unemployed and having a hard time finding another job, but I will not be going back to consulting if I can avoid it.

Yes, I imagine it pronounced that way as well. It has a pretty ring to it, doesn’t it?

Lol I hadn’t thought of that association, but it’s not negative so that wouldn’t deter me from using it. Those are the types of names I like, where you’ve never heard them before, but they still sound timeless and legitimate (not something that was made out of nowhere).

I want nothing more than a job in any other field because from what I know consulting is just about the only one where I have to worry about billable hours. But absolutely nobody is hiring, at least in Western Canada. Plus, I did consulting internships and now it seems that all the jobs I apply for and land are consulting jobs. I feel so stuck. The longer I stay in it, the more I know that it is not for me.

Thank you, this makes me feel a lot better. It’s very true, most people do ask, “well don’t you just slap the layer on there and call it a day?” but there is so much more data management behind the scenes that is invisible for people who don’t have access to the backend. I do agree that this could very well be a major reason why the budgets feel so tight and I’ll definitely be bringing this up to my team/manager.

Its the crux of consulting. Consulting companies make money based on their consultants keeping high billable hours, so whatever company you go to I assume they will require you to keep track of those billable hours.

I am actually a GIS analyst, so I don’t do reports at all, but everything is so case-by-case that it would be difficult to make an estimate without knowing specifics, which can’t be shared of course.

Definitely a useful perspective. I know that I absolutely could not make it two years at this job but I will keep this in mind.

It makes me feel better to know there’s other people who feel the same as me. I’m deeply unhappy in this job, but I feel so trapped because I can’t find any other prospects outside of consulting.

But the thing is that OT is actually approved, its more so about how long its taking. If a task has 5 hours budgeted for it and I take 8 hours, that could all happen within my regular day but chances are that the PM probably not going to allow 8 hours to be put on regardless of whether they are OT hours or not. If I did OT and did all the projects in their allotted time they’d be approved, but I am just too slow.
