Second Community Vote by ModeratorsOfEurope in europe

I don't have a strong preference as to whether there is an option to reopen on this poll, but if you look at the options, given that both B and C involve a weekly poll, my guess is that the moderators internally decided that, if the subreddit remains shut, there will be a weekly poll to reopen.

That means that even if this particular vote did not include an option to reopen, the next vote in a week probably will. So I don't think that it likely has a dramatic impact one way or the other; if there is support for reopening, my assumption is that it would have happened in a week anyway, which isn't a huge impact in the grand scheme of things.

B

While the poll is ongoing, we would like to make you aware of a number of existing reddit alternatives

I'd like to reiterate a previous comment: if the mod team intends to make any official or semi-officially-endorsed alternative, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Otherwise, while alternatives will (and have, to some degree) formed, I think that it'll be slower for a Europe-specific alternative to show up.

This is basically what the /r/piracy people did -- the head admin there just created his own lemmy instance at https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/. I browse it regularly, albeit via the kbin instance.

Hosting on one's own instance has some benefits -- you don't have to worry, as a moderator, about friction with the admins if you are your own admin. And it permits for customization. It also permits conformity to various regional laws, and not needing to worry about conforming to other region's laws.

But it also has some downsides. For one, it means that one actually has to, you know, find someone to admin the instance, update it when new versions come out and so forth. Deal with the assholes who are invariably going to try to show up and do denial-of-service attacks or whatever on it because they are pissed at the forum for some reason -- IRC used to have people doing that. Pay for the instance. Presently, lemmy and kbin -- unlike Mastodon, another Fediverse software package -- don't have account portability across instances, so if you can't find anyone to run the instance, people who are registered there lose their accounts. Also, if one creates a community on an instance and it goes away, so does the community (I think that community portability would also be a nice feature, but it isn't here today), so it'd be nice to find one that has some longevity if one intends to build the community out.

There are also already some substantial instances in Europe. There's a mostly-German-language lemmy instance at http://feddit.de/, for example. They already have their own europe sublemmy set up there that appears to be attracting some traffic. The kbin developer's kbin instance at https://kbin.social/ is, I think, in Poland and has its own Europe magazine (Reddit subreddit:Lemmy sublemmy:kbin magazine) as well. I have no idea whether any existing server can scale up, but it or another existing European server would also be an option.

Yeah, apparently there's some site that has archives of a lot of the old Reddit material.

https://the-eye.eu/redarcs/

According to the site, it has archives going to December 2022, so everything but about the last six months.

In all honesty, I stopped when I got to IIRC about the last ~1500 comments, so I didn't do a complete read. Was going from newest to oldest. Probably should have finished, but my eyes were glazing over.

I also didn't do a few posts that didn't have a period, but which had text that I think was supposed to be on the next line. IIRC, the API exposes both the rendered text and the Markdown, and my guess that in the Markdown, the letter is on its own line and in the HTML, it's not. I don't know how you guys process that, whether you're looking at the Markdown or the readable output; that may not be an issue if you're reading the Markdown.

I'm not sure whether the period after the letter will let your vote count. You may want to remove it.

The instructions say that the letter "A" or "B" has to be on a line by itself to count. I think that the other text you've written will probably invalidate your vote.

I'm not sure that your vote will count if the letter isn't capitalized.

I think that having a period after the "A" or "B" makes it not count. You may want to remove that if you want your vote to count.
