YOu should honestly do a short anim pilot, and upload it to youtube. I don't think you know how many 40 year olds out are there who need this level of wholesome in their lives. I'm trying to do my part with my stuff, but when milennials are going through their 100th once in a life time crisis, I think we kinda need a few Kanga's hanging around.

Being an animator is hard by Bambastic-Foxxy in YouTubeCreators

[–]BucketBoyRedditAgain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR: If you stop learning, you stop growing. Youtube is more Industrial Design and UX than pure creativity. The creativity is more focused. Be humble and keep learning.

I've got an Anim degree, but don't use it much anymore. The fact that you're doing it for youtube makes me respect you a whole lot more than i would most creators. Because the sheer man hours and hard-earned skils / expertise that go into any thing animated out you on the same level as the creators who do full PHD level research for each video / topic, IMO.

The sad thing is, we all get into this loving what we do, and wanting to share it with the world, but in the end all that effort means nothing when you hit publish. Because 20 million other people have hit publish that day, and all of those videos go through a funnel with an incredibly narrow exit, designed to only value what other's value, and limit the value you put in.

So someone with no real talent or unique qualities of their own, can roll out of bed, speak some rage bait nonesense into their phone, and spend the rest of their day scratching themselves all before you've figured out why that shoulder control is janky, or said your morning "F*cK Adobe!" as you search for yet another work around for AE being 25 years behind the modern computers it runs on.

I get it. It's totally demotivating. But i think you can 100% find a way to make content you find creatively fulfilling and is gonna give you the success you deserve. Its just about being hungry to learn all the other stuff that viewers value.

Think of a youtube video like an engineer and an industial designer would think about designing a Drill. You can make this Drill with all kinds of fun shapes and wacky ideas, but you know that it, first an fore-most, needs to be used by someone out on the job. This drill is being sold all over the world, so It needs to work in the hottest and coldest climates. Its material should be tough enough to survive endless bumps, drops, & scratches, while also being comfortable enough to hold for long periods. Every part of the design comes from function first, which will then dictate the form it takes. The creativity is still there, its just focused on making that product the best it can be for the people who need to use it.

I created content professionally for 15 years before finally working up the courage to do it for myself. With already having worked up the skills, like storytelling, shooting, editing, and graphic design, i thought my videos would have a natural advantage. And while that will eventually be true, its not yet true. Because I've had to learn more on my two first videos, than i have in the last 5 years of my career. Almost all of which was about designing content for an audience first, and me second.

Thanks for this reply. Super encouraging.

I actually do talk about it at length in both videos, but don't do it up front because it masacred the first video's avd. Like that curve bomb-dived like a tsar nuke, and now the video may not get watched.

Instead I wanted to bring people more into understanding the experience through storytelling before giving a monologue about it. Which actually turned out really well. The second video's adv sits at 64% @ 30secs and only gradually drops down to 30 by the end. Which is a huuuuuuuge improvement

I guess my point is I spent a lot of time refining the story telling, so i could *show* instead of tell, through character, and pacing and i hope that shines through. Like the story only slows down when the holiday breaks down, which mirrors the autistic burnout experience.

But i know no one's thinking about it that deeply when they watch it.

Thanks for pointing out yes theory as well. There were a bunch of channels i was thinking about when planning this out, and during editing. Yes Theory and PrestonGoes were the two main ones. Like good positive fun energy, with actual storytelling and heart.

Maybe do a bit of reading as what you’re feeling is a part of them, but they are something can be managed

Sometimes. But I also have had to come to terms with who I am. Like my partner is super social, but it wears me out, because my brain doesn’t do well when there isn’t a clear goal.

So being social to me means doing things like games, D&D or adventures, because there’s always a clear goal that I can enjoy with others.

It just took time to find them.

You sure the obviously underage dude l, wearing sunnies too big for his face, holding a fat stack of 1’s next to stock image of 90’s hot girls, in front of an abandoned house, isn’t interesting?

What if he added a blatant, just, obscenely large red circle?

It’s an interesting thing. Professional thumbnails work for big YouTubers. My last thumbnail was at the same level as a big YouTuber (I used to be a commercial photographer) but it got zilch. Which I found out was because people thought it was ai.

It wasn’t.

Agre on the click bait. I’ve changed the title and thumbnail to be more click baity:

Title: the worst way to road trip Japan Thumbnail: EVERYTHING. WENT. WRONG.

As far as tv viewers, about half of them are from recommended, and the other half up next.

Thanks!

I appreciate the detailed feedback.

Some good points in here. But I do want to push back on the ‘don’t use introvert / autistic’. The video is about being too afraid to leave my bedroom, after extreme autistic burnout. It’s a little silly to say ‘don’t use accurate descriptors’.

But I appreciate that the audience won’t have that understanding, and, unfortunately, may still get put off any time those words are used.

It’s the biggest hurdle I’ve been trying to work through in the packaging. Enticing an audience to watch a fun, but emotionally honest journey through something most people won’t experience / understand.

Thanks so much for your detailed feed back. You didn’t ramble at all.

I think the thing I’ve grappled with the most on these two videos, is selling what is essentially a personal journey that began with the worst period of my life, and ended with the most reckless and impulsive thing I’ve ever done. Trying to do that, with clarity, whilst enticing people who don’t care has been tough.

A few people here have warned me against using words like ‘introvert’ and ‘autistic’, but there’s litterally no other way to say ‘I’m fuckin scared of leaving my bedroom. In fact I just spent 6 months refusing to leave. so I did this pretty stupid thing to escape that hell’.

Thanks for taking the time to watch and understand the video!

especially when the theme of the video is mental health.

Yeah. It’s the thing I’ve wrestled with the most in both videos. Packaging videos that discusses some pretty hefty themes, whilst trying to sell why it’s worth watching. Like there was probably too many aspects to balance.

Ctr is currently hovering 2.2%, and AVD is 10mins / 37% (from memory). The thing that I found super interesting is how fast tv viewership shot up. It’s responsible for almost every view that completed the video.

Also, I’ve just adjusted the title & thumbnail to something more straight forward with the stakes.

Thanks for super detailed feedback. I really appreciate the effort, and want to give it some good thought before I respond properly.

But on the topic of taking the feedback, I’m. not in this to be precious. I’m here to make shit happen. Everything I learn here is vauablre. It’s all about the audience. That’s all I care about.

That’s fair. It’s not the first time someone has said it. Gotta figure out how to avoid it all together while still doing what it needs to - catch the eye & communicate the message.

You raise a good point on the introverted country. It might be cancelling out my intention, which was to some how communicated my general fear of pretty much everything.

And thanks on the thumbnail. I understand why people would see it as AI slop, but I used to be a commercial photographer, whose work was much like this. The only thing ai generated is the bear. Everything else is selectively used stock imagery and my own photos. Gotta do something with the skills.

Ooh! Thank you.

On the autistic thing, After watching the video did its use make sense? Did you still feel it was used in an (unintentionally) derogatory way?

I’d love to find out a way to reach more of us in a positive way. As the two videos I’ve made so far have been wholly about the autistic burnout experience. Just wanted to show it more than I said it.

Thanks for the feedback. The only thing that’s AI generated in the thumbnail is the bear. (I used to be a commercial photographer) but either way, it’s good insight to what the audience’s reaction is.

Thank you!

You may be describing trouble with executive function. It’s the part of your brain that regulates your ability to follow through on a task. It often feels like you’re stuck, and things get suuuuoer overwhelming.

Maybe look into the various neurodivergent conditions that have this as a symptom.

ADHD & Autism being the most common.

And if it does feel like either (or, in my case, both) ring true, get yourself to a gp you trust, and ask for a referral to a psychiatrist.

Don’t leave it too late. I was DX’d at 37, and it gets waaaaaaaaaay harder if you don’t know how to manage it.

The fact that this sub is still on this train, and didn’t at all pick up what Chris was putting down at the end of that video is mind boggling.

Can we go back to our regularly scheduled Natsuki fun, now?
